昨日は、アメリカ人ご夫婦と夕食をご一緒しました。Cooking Clubで知り合ったお友達、明日から２ヶ月ほどシンガポールを留守にされるので、その前にキャッチアップ。前回お友達にお目にかかったのはわたしが日本に行く前なので、２ヶ月ぶり。
We had dinner with American friends. I met this friend through Cooking Club and she is leaving for a holiday for 2 months tomorrow, so we wanted to catch up with each other before then and we just made it. It’s been 2 months since I met her last as it was before I left for Japan in March.
火鍋のご提案があったので、一度伺って美味しかった「Tang Restaurant, Bar & Supper Club」にご一緒しました。お友達のご主人は担々麺がお好きとのことで最初に担々麺２つをシェアー。スープがないタイプというのは知っていたのですが、思っていたのとは随分違う感じでした。
She suggseted a steam boat restaurant so I asked her if she wanted to try Tang, a new place I’d been to for lunch sometime ago. For the first dish we tried Dan Dan noodles as her husband loves it. I knew it was going to be the dry type but it was quite different from what I expected, it wasn’t spicy at all. Then we had the steam boat. We asked them to use a pot with a divider, although both my friend & her husband and my husband & I wanted spicy Szechuan soup, so that our friends could eat fish and seafood if they wanted. In the end we ended up ordering the same things and shared so it wasn’t necessary.
わたしはお魚やシーフードがほとんどいただけませんし、お友達はお好きなので同じ四川の辛いスープを選びましたがお友達ご夫婦がお魚なども召し上がれるように２つに分けていただきました。結局、終わってみれば同じものをオーダーしてシェアーしたので必要なかったのですが。
前回ランチで伺ったときはそんなことはなく美味しくいただけたのですが、今回はスープが相当辛く、スパイスを吸ってしまうものは本当に辛くてご飯で紛らわせながらどうにかいただく感じでした。四川山椒は噛まないように避けていても、スープそのものが本当に辛かったので。。。前回は日本人の方がオーダーをとってくださったので、多分少し加減してくださっていたのでしょうね。辛さの好みはひとそれぞれなので難しいですが、余程辛いのが得意な方以外は少し辛さを弱めていただくようお願いしたほうが良いように思います。
When I was there for lunch, it wasn’t too spicy to enjoy, but this time it was far more spicy than before. At that lunch, a Japanese lady dealt with us so I’m wondering if she asked the chef to make the soup less spicy than usual. Yesterday, the two guys in our group said it was OK after the initial shock, but for both my friend and I it was too spicy to enjoy. It’s hard to judge, as everyone has a different level of tolerance to spiciness, but unless you love extremely spicy foods, I think it’s better to ask them to make it milder than their usual.
団体さんが２組入っていて、団体でないのはわたしたちだけ、という少々困ったシチュエーションで、小さなお子さんもたくさんおられてお誕生日会かなにかだったようで当然賑やか。お店の方は「すみません」と何度も謝っておられお店のせいではないものの、団体さんがすぐそばに座られるとわかっていてたら（お店はショップハウスなので狭いのです）他のお店に行ったと思います。もう１つ困るのは、前回も思ったのですが、換気がないので湯気をまともに浴びてしまいます。なので暑いのと、食事が終わったときには全身火鍋の匂い。鍋の上に換気扇があると良いのですが。
Unfortunately for us, there were 2 large groups with small children there at the same time, and the room is quite small as it’s a shop house, so it got very loud (and I don’t blame them, we all get like that when we are in a large group). The staff was very apologetic but there was nothing anyone could do – except that I would have chosen a different restaurant if we’d known the situation when I made the booking. Another problem I found is that there is no exhaust fan above the pots so you end up getting the steam all over yourselves – you get very hot and also your whole body smells of the soup after dinner….I wish they’d installed exhausts above the tables.
火鍋が終わった時点で、バー側にうつって出してくださったデザートのフルーツをいただいて解散しました。
After having the steam boat, we moved to their bar area for a dessert, which was some fruits.
４月に日本に（ご主人はお仕事で何度も行かれているようですが、お友達は初めて）行かれたのですが、とても楽しまれたようで、桜も見頃のときにご覧になれたようで何よりでした。次回お目にかかれるのは多分８月。こうして数回あうと１年が過ぎています。
In April our friends went to Japan (it was the first time for my friend although her husband had been to Japan many times on business). They seem to have had a great time – good food and cherry blossoms at full bloom. I guess it’ll be in August next time I can see her – and a year goes by so quickly.
