今日は金曜日、いつもは夫と外食ですが夫が会社の会食があるというので（結局それは少し前にキャンセルされてしまったのですが、わたしは先約優先ですので）お友達数人とディナーをご一緒しました。久しぶりに、Tamarind Hill に行きました。シンガポールの前に長くタイにお住まいだった方が行かれたことがない、とのことで、夫の出張が入ったらご一緒しましょうと言っていたのでした。
I usually go out for dinner with my husband on Fridays but he told me he had a company dinner today (it got cancelled some days ago but I had already made this arrangement with my friends, he didn’t mind) so I had dinner with a few friends. One of them lived in Bangkok for many years before coming to Singapore and she wanted to try “Tamarind Hill” so that’s where we went with 2 mutual friends.
ここは目の前まで車で乗り付けることができず、タクシーを降りてから屋根のないところを階段で登って行かなくてはいけないので、雨が降ると困ります。今日遅めの午後、雷が鳴ったりしていて少し心配しましたが、大丈夫でした。
The building is not reachable by taxi, you have to get off at the bottom of steps that has no cover, so it’s not a place you want to go to when it’s raining heavily. I was a little worried today as we had a thunder late in the afternoon but it stopped raining quickly so it was OK.
建物の入り口の写真を撮ろうと撮ったのですが、寒いくらいのタクシーの中から降りると蒸し暑いシンガポールではあっという間にレンズが曇ってしまいます。
I wanted to take a photo of the entrance but the humidity made the lens of my camera blurred with the condensation almost as soon as I got off the taxi.
コロニアル調の素敵な建物で、テーブルとテーブルが離れているのも良いです。夜の方が雰囲気が良いレストランですが、メニューが内容もお値段もお昼と夜と随分違うのでどちらも行きたいところ。
The building is quite large, colonial one and has very nice feel – specially at night. As it’s spacious, tables are placed with good distance between each other, which is great.

Napkins are folded into the shape of candles.
チキンのラープ。前はもう少し辛かったと思うのですが、今日は辛さが足りませんでした。オーダーするときに、お店の標準より辛くしてくださいとお願いしたのですけどね。
Chicken Laab. I thought it was more spicy last time but it wasn’t very spicy today. We did ask them to make it more spicy than their standard but still on a mild side.
辛さのリクエストは難しいのですよね。very spicy にするかと聞かれてすご〜く辛いのは困る、普通より辛くと言ったら控えられてしまったようでした。お店の標準はあまり辛くないので、very spicy でも良かったかも。
I find it difficult to make request for spiciness because you don’t know how spicy is someone else’s spicy. I didn’t want them to make it extreme so requested “spicier than the restaurant’s standard”. Maybe we should say “very spicy” next time.
ビーフのマサマンカレー。ビーフは多分スネ肉だと思います、柔らかく煮込まれてしました。
Beef Massaman curry. I guess the beef is beef shin, it was quite tender and good.
チキンのグリーンカレー。これも、もう少し辛い方が美味しい。
Chicken green curry. We would have liked this more spicy, too.
モーニンググローリーのチリとガーリックの炒め物。何かお魚が入っていてわたしはいただけず。。。
Stir-fried morning glory with cilli and garlic. It had some sort of fish for seasoning so I couldn’t eat it.

Pork neck with rice powder.
個人的には味のバランスは全体的に美味しいと思いますが、辛さが足りない。次回は、かなり辛くとお願いしてみます。
Personally, I like their seasoning balance except that it’s too mild. I must remember to ask them to make it more spicy next time.
タイにお住まいだったお友達も辛さにはかなり物足りないようでしたが、まずまずという感じだったでしょうか。飲み物は３人はビール、１人はモクテル。最後にそれぞれお茶やコーヒーをオーダーし、１人６５ドルほどでしたのでディナーとしては悪くないような気がします。４人でたくさんおしゃべりして、お腹いっぱいいただいて、とても楽しいひとときでした。
I think the friend who lived in Bangkok also liked them although she also said they should be more spicy. 3 of us had beer, 1 had a mocktail and we also had tea or coffee after the meal and it was about S$65, which isn’t too bad for dinner in Singapore.
We chatted a lot, ate a lot and had a great evening.
