さて、台湾の続きです。九份から一度ホテルに戻り、少し休憩してからハイヤーにピックアップしてもらい、夕食の予約を入れていた「欣葉（シイエイー）」に行きました。有名店で台北内にも何店かありますが、シンガポールにもあるお店です。今回台湾料理のお店には１軒にしか行けないスケジュールだったので、やはり一番最初に思い浮かぶ有名店に行きました。

On our 2nd day in Taiwan, after visiting Jiufen, we went back to the hotel and had a little rest before we got picked up by our driver to go for dinner.  We booked Shin Yeh – it’s a very famous restaurant that has many branches in Taiwan, they even have some branches in Singapore.  As we had only one evening to try a typical Taiwanese meal I chose this famous place.

わたしはお魚やシーフードはいただけませんが妹や弟は好きなので、残すのは覚悟で色々オーダーしてみました。一応ネット情報を調べておすすめのあれこれをオーダー。

I cannot eat fish or seafood (in general) but my sister and brother do so we ordered quite a few dishes knowing we won’t be able to eat all.  We checked on the internet what people recommend and ordered those which had lots of recommendations.

滷肉（豚の角煮）。思っていたよりずっと薄味。個人的には（思い込みのせいか）、豚の角煮はもっとこっくり煮込んだものの方が好みでした。

Slow-cooked pork belly.  I don’t know if it’s because of my conception or not, but I found this not very deep-flavoured.  It was quite lightly seasoned – not always a bad thing but I personally prefer a stronger taste for this type of dish.

からすみを、多分大根？？で挟んだ前菜。妹と弟は、あまりからすみの味がしなくてあまり。。。と言っていました。

This was a starter – it’s dried mullet roe (one of the typical famous Taiwanese ingredients) in daikon, I think.  My sister and brother weren’t very impressed.

エビチリのようなのも頼んでみました。これもかなり薄味だったような記憶です。エビはぷりぷりしていて普通に美味しかったですが。

Prawns with chilli. Prawns were nice and fresh but it was again very lightly seasoned.

台湾料理といえば思い浮かぶ、切り干し大根入りのオムレツ。切り干し大根の煮込みなどは好きですが、これは個人的に何度かトライしてみたけれどあまり美味しいと思えないのです。妹と弟は食べたことがなかったのでオーダーしてみたのですが、２人の反応もあまり良くなかった。

This is a very typical Taiwanese dish – omelette with dried dikon.  I have tried this a few times but I don’t personally like it so much but I felt my sister and brother should try as it was their first time to have Taiwanese food.  They didn’t seem to like it very much either.

カニおこわ。これもあまり反応が良くなかったですね。

Sticky rice with crabs.  Again, they didn’t seem to be very impressed….

炒飯は普通に美味しかったと思います。

Fried-rice was good.

まだ少し物足らなかったので（カニおこわなどは残っていましたが）、ビーフンをオーダー。この日いただいたなかで一番しっかり目の味付けでしたが、わたしはこれくらいが美味しく感じました。

I didn’t feel I had enough so we ordered stir-fried glass noodles, which was very good.

「手打杏仁豆腐」。評判通り食感がおもしろく、美味しくいただきました。

For dessert we had (Chinese-style) almond jelly that everyone seems to recommend and it was very nice.  The texture is quite different from usual one.  Light and refreshing.

Complimentary dessert – mochi with peanuts.  It was nice, too.

ということで、全体的に薄味であまりインパクトがないという感想です。わたしも妹や弟も決して味が濃いわけではなく、どちらかというと薄めだと思うので（シンガポールでは味が濃すぎて食べられないくらいのことも多いですし、神戸でも東京でもレストランで味が薄いと感じることは滅多にありません）薄味なのだと思います。

So, I thought the seasoning was a little too light for us.  I don’t think we like more salty food than average, we probably use slightly less seasoning than average in general but it was too light for us.

実は、このお店にはシンガポールでも行ったことがありますが、わたしはあまり美味しいと思わなかったのです。ただ、わたしはお魚やシーフードがいただけず、台湾料理はシーフードが美味しいイメージだったのでそのせいかなと思っていました。今回妹も弟もあまり印象が良くなかったようなので、我が家の好みに合わないのか、たまたまなのか。。。その辺りはわかりませんが、今回の短い滞在での印象は、B級グルメの方が面白く美味しいといように思いました。

I have tried 2 branches of this restaurant in Singapore and I didn’t like what I had there, but I thought it was probably because I don’t eat seafood, which is a big thing in Taiwanese food.  However, seeing my sister and brother’s reaction, it’s not only that.  Maybe it’s not to “our” taste.  I don’t know…  My impression is that cheaper and very local food is more interesting to try and more enjoyable than “restaurant food” in Taiwan, but our stay was really too short to know better.

この日、２日目は朝からフル活動で、九份では人混みを長く歩いて結構疲れていたのですが、やはり台湾では夜市に行きたいと思い、ディナーの後ホテルから比較的近いところまで借りていたハイヤーで連れて行っていただきました。ところが、着いてみれば駅からずっとすご人でした。普段からそこそこは混むのでしょうが、やはり連休中だったために特別人が多かったようでした。

We started early this day and were quite tired after walking in the crowd in Jiufen but we wanted to go to a night market so we asked our driver to take us to one of them near our hotel after the dinner and we did go, but it looked so busy with so many people.  Since we had enough of walking in a crowd in Jiufen, we decided to skip it.  Although night markets are always busy, it was particularly busy because of the 4 day weekend.

九份で長い時間四方人に囲まれた状態で歩いて疲れていたので、また人混みに入る気になれず、このままUターンしてホテルに戻っていただきました。台湾に行くにあたってどうしても行きたいところ、食べたいものの中であきらめたのはこの夜市だけでした。またいくことがあったら、次回は！

Night market is the only thing we didn’t get to out of the many places on our list.  Hopefully we’ll visit one if we go back to Taiwan.
