湖水地方では通り道だったウィンダミアに泊まることにし、ホテルは夫が選んでくれた「Gilpin Hotel」に泊まりました。このホテルもそうですが、ホテル選びには昔 日本にいた頃によく旅行されていたお友達から教えていただいた Relais & Châteaux というグループから選ぶことが多いです。失敗もありましたが、比較的満足できるホテルが多いように思います。それにしても、昔は、思っていたホテルと全然違ったということもよくありましたが、最近はインターネットのお陰でホテル選びに大失敗をすることは少なくなりました。
We decided to stay in Windermere as it was on the way to Scotland. My husband looked for a hotel there and he chose “Gilpin Hotel”. It’s a member of Relais & Châteaux, which is the group we often choose hotels from. A friend who used to travel a lot told me about it when we were still living in Japan and since then we use this group most of the time when we can. There have been some of their hotels that we didn’t like, but in general the level of the hotels in this group is quite high and satisfactory. It’s a lot easier now that we have the internet to choose the right hotels (ones that don’t disappoint you) but I remember the days without internet, there were quite a few occasions when we were very disappointed when we got to a hotel.

右側の建物は、レストランです。メインの建物の中にはメインダイニングがありますが、この建物はカジュアルなレストランになっています。わたしたちは２泊したので、両方で食事をしました。
This building is their casual restaurant. The main restaurant is in the main building. We had dinner in both.
右手前の建物がわたしたちが泊まったお部屋がある建物です。

フロントからお部屋に入るのですが、ドアを開けてそのまままっすぐお部屋を横切るとパティオに出られるドアがあり、小さな小さなパティオがついています。座ってらっしゃる方がおられるところはお隣のお部屋のパティオ。
Our room had doors to go out to a very small patio.
お部屋は、そこそこ広さもあり居心地も悪くなかったですが、結構暗かった印象です。
The room was large enough and comfortable but I have the feeling it was very dark.

ドーント・ディスターブのサイン代わりの、猫ちゃん。可愛い。ふんわりしたものではなく、どっしりしたぬいぐるみでした。本来は、ドアストッパーなのかな？ドアの前に置くようになっていました。気になって気をつけてみていると、お部屋によって形やファブリックが違っていて、５、６種類ありました。
This cute little cat is the sign for “Do Not Disturb” and you put it outside the room in front of the door. It was not the squishy type but quite a firm one, maybe it’s supposed to be a door stopper? I saw 5 or 6 different ones (different shapes and different fabrics).
後ほどアップする予定ですが、メインダイニングでの食事はとても美味しかったです（ミシュランの星付きでした）。ホテルは何も問題はなかったですし、まぁ、悪くない感じではありましたが、また是非泊まりたいと思うほどではなかったです。インテリアがそれほど好みではなかったかな。
ちなみに夫は湖の側だと思っていたようで、そうでなくて少しがっかりしていたみたいです。わたしは今初めてウェブサイトを見て気づいたのですが、「Gilpin Hotel」 と「Gilpin Lake House」 と両方あって、わたしたちが泊まったのは Gilpin Hotel の方だったようです。多分夫は「Gilpin Hotel and Lake House」という１つのホテルだと思っていたのだな、と思って聞いてみたらやはりそうでした。残念。ここも悪くはなかったですが、せっかく湖水地方に泊まるなら湖が見えるところに泊まりたいですよね。ここは通り道だからと決めたのでまぁ良かったですが、湖水地方に旅行に行ってこういうことになっていたらがっかりしていたと思います。ウェブサイトにはちゃんと書いてあるので、こちらの問題ですが。
I will blog about it later, but we had a very nice dinner at their main restaurant. We didn’t have any issues with the hotel (other than the room seeming quite dark) and it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t at the standard that we would be talking about wanting to go back to. I think their service was very good, staff were all very friendly and attentive. Perhaps we feel this way because the interior wasn’t really to our liking – not that we disliked it but it didn’t seem very sophisticated. I didn’t like the plastic flowers they used everywhere. Also, everything (furniture) seemed to be a bit crammed.
My husband was a little disappointed that it wasn’t at the lake. I didn’t pay much attention when I looked at their site when he originally asked me to see if it was OK with me, but I just looked at it again and realised they have “Gilpin Hotel” and “Gilpin Lake House” separately and they are a mile apart. I guessed my husband thought it was all one thing – I just asked him and that was what he thought. It was fine because we stayed there just so we didn’t have to make the whole journey to Scotland in one go, but if we went to the Lake District and stayed there thinking it was at the lake it would have been more disappointing. It is written in their website but seems an easy mistake to make if you don’t pay enough attention.
