デボン州から湖水地方のウィンダミアまでは車で休憩なしで５時間半くらいの距離です。以前は移動日は途中パブでランチをすることが多かったのですが、高速から降りてパブに行っている時間がもったいないのと、今は結構高速道路の休憩所にミニのマークス&スペンサーズがあるので（こういうサンドイッチの方がパブの食事より美味しいことも多いし）この日はサンドイッチを買って食べました。M＆Sのサンドイッチは美味しくて好きです。この日は朝から雨が降っていて、途中からやんだのですが、車の中から撮った景色は水滴だらけでボツでした。翌日も途中雨が降りましたが、陽も差して綺麗な景色も見ることができました。
It takes about 5.5 hours from Devon to Windermere in the Lake District. We used to go to a pub for lunch on a day of a long drive like this, but this time we bought some sandwiches and juice at one of the Marks & Spencers on the motorway and had that for lunch – partly because we didn’t want to waste too much time getting off the road, but also because these sandwiches are often nicer than a pub lunch. I really like sandwiches from M&S. The day we drove from Devon to Windermere, it started with rain then stopped raining later. The photos didn’t look good as I took them from inside the car and there were too many rain drops on the windows. Next day, we went out late in the morning, had lunch at a cafe “Chesters By The River”
We had lunch there 2 years ago when we had a holiday in the Lake District and liked it very much. It’s very popular but we were lucky enough not to have to wait to get a table – I think it was the last table available. The cafe has a large shop as well.
ウィンダミアに泊まった翌日は、朝遅めの時間に出て、２年ほど前に湖水地方でホリデーを過ごしたときに行った『Chesters By The River』というカフェでランチをしました。雑貨屋さんも併設されていて、結構大きなカフェになっています。人気のようですが、早めの時間だったので丁度１テーブル空いていて並ばずに座れました。
今回は、サラダプレートを夫とシェアーしました。美味しかったのですが、メインの３つのサラダの食感がどれもぷつぷつしたもので（キヌアサラダ、レンティルサラダ、ご飯サラダ、ポテト、ナスのグリル）、ちょっと単調でした。
We shared a salad plate. Although it was all very tasty, the main 3 salads (quinoa salad, lentil salad and rice salad) all have a similar texture so we got a little tired of it.
ここはケーキが美味しくて有名らしいのですが、前回食べたケーキはあまりわたし的には大味で美味しいと思わなかったのです。でも、このメレンゲのスイスロールには魅かれました。それほど甘いものは食べないというわたしですが、メレンゲ大好き。ただ、生クリームたっぷりだと苦手で中にたっぷり生クリームが入っているように見えましたし、メレンゲはほとんどお砂糖ですからね〜、ぐっとこらえました。
They are known best for cakes but I didn’t like the cakes I tried last time very much so we didn’t have any this time. I must say, though, this Meringue Roulade looked delicious. I do love meringue but don’t like whipped cream very much and it looked like it may have a lot of cream inside. Besides, I know that meringue is mostly sugar, so I was very strong and resisted it. It does look yummy, though.
湖水地方の景色は、デボンのあたりの景色と似ている気がします。羊がたくさんいました〜。
The scenery in the Lake District (some parts of it anyway) look quite similar to that in Devon, I think. Rolling hills and lots of sheep.
お天気があまり良くなく、写真を撮るのに車を停めるところもあまりなく、肝心の湖の綺麗な写真が撮れず残念でした。
I wasn’t able to get any good shots of the lakes, there weren’t many good places to stop the car and the weather wasn’t great.
アンブルサイドというウィンダミアから３０分くらいのところにある街をちらっと散策しました。
We walked around Ambleside, which is about 30 minutes from Windermere, a little.
今回は丸１日しかなかったですし、まだ時差ぼけも残っていたので出来ませんでしたが、湖水地方はウォーキングをするのに良いところです。２年前は何度かウォーキングもしたので、ご興味があれば以前のブログもご覧くださいませ。
This time we had basically just one day to spend there, and we were still suffering from jet lag, so we didn’t do much, but the Lake District is a great place for walking. We did do some walking there when we had a holiday 2 years ago, so if you are interested please go here.
