インド旅行７日目、ジョドプール２日目。ランチは、Raas Hotel   （このホテルに泊まろうと思ったのですが、予約を入れた時点で既に満席で泊まれなかったホテルです）の   The Stepwell Cafe に予約を入れていました。というか、ウェブサイトにもそのように書かれていますしエージェントからもそう聞いていましたので、The Stepwell Cafe は Raas Hotel にあるものと思っていました。ガイドさんとドライバーさんが Raas Hotel に連れて行ってくださったので中に入って受付けで名前を告げると連れて行かれたレストランは、こちら。

Day 7 on our India trip, the 2nd day in Jodhpur.  We had a reservation for lunch at The Stepwell Cafe at Raas Hotel – or so we thought.  (Incidentaly, I wanted to stay at Raas Hotel but they were already fully booked when I started booking hotels in India.)  The hotel website lists The Stepwell Cafe as one of their restaurants and it says you can get there through their private gate and the agent also told me it was there.  The guide and the driver took us to the hotel, we told our name at the reception and the receptionist took us to this restaurant.  I asked if we can see the stepwell from this place when we were taken to this restaurant.

前菜は、野菜とポテトのおやきのようなものと、もう１つは思い出せません。。。

The starter was some potato and vegetable patties and … I cannot remember the other one.

メインは多分パニエ（インドのカッテージチーズ）カレーとカリフラワーのカレー。

Then we had Pannier curry and … cauliflower curry?

お料理をオーダーする前からあるはずの Stepwell （階段がついた井戸）をあちこち探しましたが見当たりません。入るときに、Stepwell はどこですかと聞いたのですが「そこから見えます」と言われるだけで要領を得ず。。。井戸を見下ろしながら食事が出来るということで選んだカフェだったのに、どこにも見えないってどういうことだろうと夫に訴えても、夫にはわたしがなぜそう井戸にこだわっているのかわからない様子。

So, before we got the menu, while we were looking at the menu I kept looking for the well, then after ordering I stood up, walked around to find it but it was nowhere to be seen.  I was very confused…  I kept telling my husband that I don’t understand why we aren’t looking down on this well I saw in many photographs online… but my husband didn’t seem to care very much.

食べ終わってからわかったことですが、ここはBaradariというレストランで、The Stepwell Cafe というのはここから歩いて数分のところにあるとのこと。以前はこのホテルから入れるようになっていたのだそうで、今もホテルのウェブサイトにはそのように書かれているのですが、今は外を回らないと行けないと言われ、食事の後井戸だけ見に行きました。夫はこれを見て、こんなに立派な井戸とは知らなかった、通りでわたしがこだわってたはず、と言われました。もう、食べてしまってからわかったので、仕方ありません。ちょうどお昼過ぎで写真を撮るには最悪のコンディションだったのでその素晴らしさがわからないと思うのですが、The Stepwell Cafe のサイトをご覧になれば伝わるのではと思います。サイトの写真の通りだとしたら、夏は子供達が泳いだりするようです。時間があればせめてカフェで飲み物でも飲んで眺めたかったのですが、そんな時間もなく、さっと写真を撮って終わりでした。

After we finished our lunch, we found out that this restaurant was “Baradari”, not “The Stepwell Cafe”.  The Stepwell Cafe is very near here but it’s a few minutes walk.  Apparently there used to be a way to get there from the hotel but not any more (their website still says you can get there through the hotel).  So we went to see the stepwell and here it is!  It was middle of the day and the worst time to take any photos as we all know, so these photos don’t do any justice to the actual well.  Please have a look at the website of The Stepwell Cafe and you’ll see how impressive it is.  My husband told me he wasn’t expecting it to be such a large impressive well and he understood then why I was making so much fuss.

We’d already eaten our lunch and we didn’t really have time to sit at the Stepwell Cafe for a drink or anything.

夕食をどこで食べるか決めていなかったので、じゃあ、夕食を The Stepwell Cafe でと思ったのですが、カフェなのでスナック類しか出していないと言われ、結局夜もこのレストランに予約を入れました。宿泊しているホテルはなんだか閑散としていて、出来ればホテルでは食べたくなかったのです。

We were going to make a booking at the Stepwell Cafe for dinner but were told they only serve snacks so not suitable for dinner.  In the end we decided to come back to this same restaurant as the food was good and we didn’t feel like eating at the hotel we were staying at because it didn’t seem to have many people and we were worried that there would be no atmosphere in their restaurant.
