今日は、お友達とランチをご一緒しました。長くお留守にされていたのでとても久しぶり。しばらく涼しいところいにいらしたので、シンガポールの暑さがこたえるとおっしゃっていました。このところ雨があまり降っていないので確かに暑いのですが、５月、６月ほどには暑くないので、やはり慣れなのだと思います。わたしも旅行先から戻るとやたら汗をかく気がします。

I had lunch with a friend, who has been away for a while.  She has been in cooler places so she was saying how hot it is in Singapore and how tired she feels.  We haven’t had any proper rain for a while so it’s been quite hot, but not nearly as hot as in May and June, so I think we do aclimatise when we are here for long.  I tend to get sweaty more easily when I come back from a holiday from somewhere cooler.

ランチの場所は色々２人で悩んで、The Populus というカフェに行ってみました。少し前まで行っていた美容院の近くなのでそういえば看板はよく目にしていましたが中に入ったことはなかったのでした。あのあたりのお店はどこもそうですが、縦長のショップハウスを使っていて、ちょっと狭い感じ。お隣のテーブルもすぐ側なのでおしゃべりもしにくい。幸い近くに日本の方はおられませんでしたが。。。

It took us a while to decide where to go but we decided to try the cafe “The Populus“.  I remember seeing the sign in the street before because I used to go to a hairdresser near there until very recently but I’d never actually been inside.  Like most other cafes and restaurants round there, it’s very narrow and you sit very close to the next table so it’s not easy to talk…  Fortunately there was no Japanese next to us, but still.

お友達は、Beef Ramen Noodles。最初ブルゴキなんとかをオーダーしたら、品切れでした。今日もメニューを持ってこられた時はなにもおっしゃらず、オーダーを受けた後「今日はやってません。」と言いにこられました、なぜどこもこうなのでしょう。１２時だったので品切れというよりもともとなかったのだと思うのです。

My friend ordered “Beef Ramen Noodles”.  At first she ordered Bulgogi something but they took the order then a few minutes later came back to tell her it wasn’t available.  Why don’t they tell us when they bring the menu?  This happens all the time in Singapore, I really don’t understand why.

ラーメンというよりもお蕎麦っぽかったですが、見た目は味が濃そうだったけど思ってたより美味しかった、とおっしゃっていました。

It looked more like Soba than Ramen and looked quite heavily seasoned but my friend said it was nicer than it looked.

わたしは、フライドチキンバーガーにしました。なぜバーガーをこういう器に入れるのか不思議、とっても食べにくい。ナイフとフォークは使えませんし、がぶりといくには分厚すぎ。。。フライドチキンは外側はかりっとしていて中は柔らかく臭みもなく美味しかったです。フライドポテトはしなっとしていてあまり美味しくなかったので、数本食べただけ。それでもお腹いっぱいになりました。

I had Fried Chicken Burger.  I don’t really get why they would put a burger in a bowl, it’s very hard to eat.  It’s too thick to bite the whole thing holding it with your hands but almost impossible to use knife and fork because of the shape of the bowl.  Still, the fried chicken was nice – crispy outside, moist inside and not gamy at all.  Fried potatoes weren’t that great, they were soggy and needed more seasoning but I was full from the burger so left most of them.

正直なところあまり居心地の良いカフェという感じではなかったですが、食べ物は美味しかったですし、コーヒーか紅茶がついて１人２３ドルだったので、シンガポールのカフェにしてはお安いように思いました。すぐ近くにあるLokalよりも食べ物はこちらの方が好きでしたが、雰囲気はLokalの方が好きです。お友達とゆっくりおしゃべりするにはもう少し雰囲気が良いところが良いかな？という気がしましたが、あれこれキャッチアップできて、楽しいひとときでした。カフェは予約できないところが多いのですが、ここは出来るのも良い点。

I cannot say that the cafe has nice decor or is even very comfortable but the food was quite good and it was S23 per person including tea or coffee, so good value for Singapore.  I personally like the food here better than The Lokal, which is another cafe nearby.  However, I do think that the decor is nicer in The Lokal.  To be able to enjoy chatting with friends, I feel we would have liked nicer looking cafe without having the people next to you almost touching you, but I still enjoyed catching up with my friend.  Another good thing is that you can reserve a table here while most cafes don’t accept reservations.
