ある程度テーマ別にまとめようと思っていたのですがあまり面白く感じないので、やはり今回の旅行記は思いつくままに書いてみたいと思います。長くなります、サファリに興味のある方だけ、ご覧くださいませ。

I thought I would concentrate on one theme for a few days but somehow I don’t feel like it, so I decided to write at random.  This is going to be a long writing, it’s only about our Safari so if you aren’t interested don’t go any further.

今回の旅行では、触りだけのような形でサファリをしました。お友達とお話しするとやはりサファリについての質問が一番多いので、サファリについて書いておこうと思います。香港やシンガポールでの欧米人のお友達にはサファリを経験された方は結構多く、みなさん是非行った方が良いとおっしゃいますが、日本人の方でサファリを経験された方はとても少ないので少しでもご参考になればと思います。

We actually did just a little bit of safari.  When I talked to my friends about our holiday, they all seem to be most curious about the safari so I would like to write about it now.  Many of my non-Japanese friends have had safari holidays but I don’t think I know any Japanese who have done it, it’s still not very common yet.

触りだけ、というのはほんの２泊ですし、行ったところは本格的なサファリとは見なされないようなのです。 Shamwari Game Reserve にはフェンスを設けていくつかの区域に分けて動物をうまく管理出来るようにしているので完全に自然な状態ではないということと、広さも小さく動物数もあまり多くないようです。それでもビッグファイブを見ることが出来ますし、その「管理」のお陰で動物の居場所の特定をしやすいので動物を見ることが出来る可能性は大きいという利点があります。

I say “just a little safari” because it was only for 2 nights and Shamwari Private Game Reserve, to some people, isn’t a real safari place because it has fences and they manage the animals, not completely naturally like some others.  It’s also small in size and also the number of animals.  However, for this reason, the rate of finding animals is high and you can see the Big Five.

以前にも書いたことがあるような気がしますが、結婚して１０年目くらいのとき、まだ日本にいるときにとてもサファリに興味があり行く気満々で調べていたのですが、日本からはとても遠いのと費用が（わたしはある程度良いところに泊まりたかったので）驚くほど高額だったので夫に「２０年目の結婚記念日に行きたい」と伝えたのでした。そのとき「オーケー」と言っていたのでわたしはそのつもりで１０年後「サファリ行くよね？」と言うと、「動物には全然興味ない」と。が〜〜〜ん、１０年間楽しみにしていたのに、今更？わたしのガッカリぶりに「そんなに行きたいなら行ってもいいよ」とは言いましたが、結婚記念に夫が行きたくないところにごり押しして行く気はなかったので別のところに行きました。今となってはどこだったのかも覚えていません、おそらく度々行っているイタリアでしょう。だから、特別な時はいつもと違うところに行きたいんですよね。思い出せもしないなんて、つまらない。

I have written this before I think, but about 10 years after we got married when we were still living in Japan, I was very interested in having a safari holiday and did some research but found out how far it was from Japan and also how expensive it was if we were to stay in the sort of places I wanted to stay in.  I felt it was too much for us at the time.  So, I said to my husband I wanted us to have a safari holiday when we have our 20th wedding anniversary and he said “OK”.  However, when the time came and when I was going to make a plan he told he he had no interest in animals.  What?  I was looking forward to it for 10 years!  He saw how disappointed I was and told me he would do it for me but I didn’t want to then knowing he didn’t have any interest.  So we went somewhere else, I cannot even remember where, probably Italy as we often go there, but I don’t like the fact that we cannot remember!  This is why I want to go somewhere “special” for special occasions.

わたしが知ってる欧米人がサファリに行くときは、２週間とか３週間とか色々な場所に移動しながら、途中景色がきれいなところも寄りつつ、基本はサファリを続けるのが一般的だと思います。この場所では特にこの動物を見ることができる、ここではこの動物の大軍が川を渡るところが見れる、など場所によって色々あって移動にもそこそこ時間がかかるので２、３週間の旅になるようです。自分の車やレンタカーで行けるところもありますが、大抵やはりホテルに泊まってそこの車とガイドさんに連れて行ってもらうのが一般的だと思います。そういうところは宿泊費も高額ですし移動費用もかかりますので大きな出費になります。わたしは１週間だけサファリをして（何しろ費用が高くて。。。）残りの休暇はイギリスでと思っていたのですが、それでも費用はかなり大きくなるので、夫が興味ないのに行く気持ちにはならなかったのでした。

I think the people I know who have had a safari holiday tend to spend 2 or 3 weeks – they stop for visiting some places as well but they seem to do safari for most of the time going here to see these animals then somewhere else to see other animals crossing the river etc etc.  It takes time to move from one place to another and costs a lot of money to stay in good places, where you are taken around by a guide.  My plan was to have a safari for just one week then spend the rest of the holiday in the UK, but even so the cost would have been a lot so I didn’t want do push my husband for something he didn’t want to do.

今回、ケープタウンに行くことにしたのはたまたまユーチューブで見かけてとても景色がきれいでしたし、自分が持っていた南アフリカのイメージと違って安全そうだったからなのですが、調べているうちに飛行機で移動しなくてもサファリが出来るところがあることがわかりました。サファリについて調べると、ほとんどの人がせっかくケープタウンまで行くならヨハネスブルグに飛んでクルーガーまで行った方が絶対に良いとおっしゃいます。クルーガーは規模が大きく、動物の数も比べ物にならないほど多いので探さなくても動物がそこかしこにいるそうです。ただ、自分の車やレンタカーで自分たちで回ることも出来るので車が多く、渋滞するほどだそうです。ヨハネスブルグの危険性は誰もが知っていることでヨハネスブルグには行きたくないと思っていましたし、マラリアの薬にアレルギー反応を起こす人もいるのでできればマラリアの薬も飲みたくないと思っていましたし、南アフリカの国内線のフライトに乗るのもできれば避けたい（ヨハネスブルグでは多くの荷物が日々盗まれるそうです）、費用もサファリにかける時間も抑えたい、などいろいろな理由でわたしはケープタウンから安全に車で行けるところにしました。

The reason why I suggested Cape Town wasn’t for safari at all.  I saw Cape Town on some videos on YouTube, saw how beautiful it is and how safe it looked – contrary to my image of South Africa – but as I was researching where to go, I found out that you can do safari without flying.  I know many people suggest you to fly to Johannesburg and go to Kruger National Park because the size is much bigger, the number of animals is very large and it’s a real safari.  However, I hear it’s very crowded as you can just go in your own car or in a rental car, Johannesburg is well known for being dangerous, and I didn’t want to take Malaria tablets if I could avoid it as I know some people react badly to them.  I wasn’t keen on flying on domestic airlines in South Africa (I hear a lot of luggage is stolen in Johannesburg airport).  It would have cost us more money and time, too.  For these reasons, I decided to try to safari in Eastern Cape, where we can drive easily enough safely.

わたしが調べたところでは、ケープタウンから８００キロメートルちょっと先のポートエリザベスの近くの Shamwari Private Game Reserve というところがケープタウンから車で行けるところでは一番評判が良いようでした。ケープタウンや東ケープはマラリアフリーなのでマラリアのお薬は必要ありません。ケープタウンからポートエリザベスまではガーデンルートと呼ばれていて景色が美しいことで知られていますので、車の移動も移動だけが目的ではなく途中の景色を楽しみながら移動することが出来ます。サファリに使う時間は２泊だけ、これなら動物に興味がないという夫につきあってもらうことに罪悪感を持たなくてすみます。わたしの誕生日祝いの旅行という名目でしたしね。

From my research, Shamwari Private Game Reserve, which is about 800km from Cape Town and a little further than Port Elizabeth, seemed to be the best.  Cape Town and Eastern Cape is Malaria free so no need to take Malaria tablets.  Although the distance is long, the area between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth is known for beautiful scenery, called the Garden Route, so we could enjoy the view while we drive to Shamwari.  The time we use for safari is only 2 nights so I didn’t have to feel guilty that my husband had no interest, specially because this holiday was to celebrate my birthday.

ということで、Shamwari Private Game Reserve に２泊しました。本当は３泊したかったのですが宿泊費が高いので２泊で我慢。なにしろ、夫は興味なかったので。でも、実際行ったらとても楽しんでいましたし、人に聞かれたら「絶対行った方が良い！」と言っていますので次回は３泊します（笑）。

So, we stayed at Shamwari Private Game Reserve for 2 nights.  I would have liked to stay for 3 nights but it is very expensive so we decided to stay for just 2 nights.  My husband, who had no interest in seeing animals, had a wonderful time there and he tells people they should do a safari!

移動距離と時間ですが、 Shamwari Private Game Reserve 近くまではグーグルマップで調べた通りの時間だったのですが、近くなってから入り口までの道が舗装されていない大きな穴がボコボコ空いたダートロードだったので最後の何キロかがとても時間がかかりました。２泊の宿泊費用には到着日のランチ、アフタヌーンティー、午後のゲームドライブ、ディナー、翌日の早朝のゲームドライブ、朝食、ランチ、アフタヌーンティー、午後のゲームドライブ、ディナー、出発当日の早朝のゲームドライブ、朝食とついていて、ソフトドリンクも無料。他に食べに行くところもないので、当日は出来ればランチタイムにチェックインしたいところなので、移動時間は少し気をつけた方が良いと思います。先に書いたようにゲームリザーブの近くの道は悪路なので、四駆がオススメです。

In terms of the distance and time to drive, it was as Google Maps showed up to near the Game Reserve, but after that the road near there was a very rough dirt road with many large holes and bumps, it took a long time to drive the last few km.  The accommodation includes the lunch on the check-in day, afternoon tea, afternoon game drive, dinner, morning game drive, breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, afternoon game drive, dinner, morning game drive & breakfast on the day you leave, all the soft drinks were free, too.  As there is nowhere else to go for meals, you want to check in around the lunch time so you need to be careful about your driving time to the game reserve.  Incidentally, the road is very rough near there as I say, so I recommend to have a 4WD car.

宿泊費用のところに書いたように、毎日早朝と午後からと１日２回ゲームドライブに出かけます。時間は季節によって変わりますが、わたしたちが行ったときは５時にモーニングコールがあって５時半に集合、コーヒーや紅茶などとマフィンなどが出て全員揃ったら出発。びっちり３時間のゲームドライブがあって、ロッジに９時１５分ごろ戻り朝食。午後からはランチ、休憩、３時半にアフタヌーンティー（とは言ってもコーヒーや紅茶とスコン程度）に集まって、全員集まったら出発、３時間のゲームドライブのあと７時過ぎに戻り、８時ごろからディナー。ゲームドライブしかすることがないので暇そう、と思っていましたが、食事とゲームドライブで結構時間が取られて、早朝起きるので結構忙しかった感じです。他にもウォーキングサファリなどもありますが、多分、大抵のところで似たようなスケジュールだと思います。

So, you have 2 game drives a day, one early in the morning, and one in the afternoon.  The times depend on the time of the year – we had a morning call at 5.00am when we were there.  You go to the main lodge to have coffee/tea/muffins etc and meet your safari partners. When everyone is there you start your game drive.  You drive for 3 hours looking for animals and get back around 9.15am, have breakfast and then rest until lunch.  After that you have another rest until 3.30, when you have afternoon tea (just tea or coffee with scones or muffins, very simple) and when everyone is there you start  your game drive.  3 hours later, a little after 7.15, you get back to the main lodge an then have dinner from about 8.00pm.  I thought we’d have plenty of time to relax as there is nothing to do other than game drives, but it felt quite busy as you have to get up so early, and don’t have so much time in between.  You may also do a walking safari but I think this is more or less what most people do on a safari.

一応道はあるのですがぼこぼこですし、道がないところもジープで登って動物探しをするのでかなり揺れます、腰に問題がある人は注意が必要かもと思います。乗り物酔いの酷い人も、もしかするときついかも？わたしは全然平気でしたが、２日目の午後から突然お天気が変わってゲームドライブ中に結構な雨になり、オープンジープ（屋根はありますが窓はないので風がビュンビュン当たります）なので寒くて疲れてしまい、ロッジに戻ったときはぐったりした感じでした。お天気が良い時も朝夕は結構寒いのでキャミソール、薄手のTシャツ、薄手のスェットシャツ、もう少し厚手のスェットシャツ、厚手のウィンドーブレーカーっぽい上着、その上に更にユニクロのウルトラダウンを着ていましたが、雨が降ったときは手袋をして、とても厚手のニットの大判スカーフを頭と首にぐるぐる巻いて目の当たりだけ出していました。その上、ジープに用意してくださっている分厚い大きな毛布を半分にして腰から下にかけていました。中まで雨が入っては来なかったので体はそれほど寒くなかったのですが顔が濡れて冷たいのと、足が結構寒いのです。タイツを持っていけば良かったです。ユニクロのウルトラダウンとニットの大判スカーフは持って行くかどうか迷いましたが、持って行って本当に良かった。ジープにはポンチョのようなものもありますし毛布も余分にありますが、毛布では写真を撮るときに手が自由になりませんし、多くの人が使っているものを頭からかけるのは抵抗があります。もちろん途中何度も動物を見るために止まりますが、ほかの時間はガタガタ道を走っているので結構疲れますので、ある程度は体力も必要だと思います。とはいえ、サファリに来ている方たちはほとんどがわたしたちくらいの年齢から上の人たち、たまに若い方がいると目立つくらいなので、まぁ、体力と言っても大したことはないですが、体の弱い方には大変かもしれません。

Although there are some roads, you also go into places where there isn’t any road in an open jeep to find animals, so the ride can be extremely bumpy, I think those who have serious back problems may not able to cope well.  Also if you get car sickness easily you may feel ill.  I was fine most of the time but I have to admit I felt extremely tired after the afternoon game drive on the 2nd day because it started to rain during the drive and it was very cold.  Even when it’s hot it gets cold in the mornings and evenings, especially when you are driving because you are in an open jeep, so I was wearing a camisole, a thin T-shirt, a thin sweat top, a medium thickness hoody, a medium thickness waterproof jacket and Uniqlo’s ultra down coat.  When it rained I also put gloves on my hands and put a huge thick knit scarf around my head and face on top of a hood and was showing just my eyes.  I also used one of the very thick blankets they have in the jeep doubled over on my knees and around my legs.  They also had ponchos and many blankets but I was very glad I had this thick warm knit scarf because I’m not keen on using those that people have already used on my head and face directly touching my skin.  The jeep does stop now and again of course to see the animals, but you are driving for quite long periods on rough roads and fields, I think you need to have some stamina.  Most people we saw were around our age or older, those younger people stood out, so it’s not that you have to be very fit, but if you have some health problem and very little stamina you may have problem.

サファリに良い時期ですが、場所によって季節が違うのでいろいろです。こちらは、今は一番良い時期だよとガイドさんはおっしゃっていました。あまり暑くなってしまうと（真夏は４０度になるそうです）動物はあまり動かないし、あまり雨が多くても良くないし、とのことでした。

The best time for safari depends on where you go naturally, as the climates are different, but the guide told us it was probably the best time when we were there.  When it’s too hot animals aren’t very active and not so good if it rains a lot.

事前に調べていた時も写真など見て「え〜、こんなに近づいていいの？」と思っていたのですが、実際行ってみるとびっくりするくらい動物に近づきます。最初は少しびっくりしましたが、ガイドさんは動物を見ればリラックスしているかイライラしているかなどわかるので「大丈夫、リラックスしてるから」と教えてくださるので信頼できて怖くは感じませんでした。

When I was researching, I did see lots of photos and thought “Wow!  Is it OK to get so close to the animals?” and the guide did take us very close to many of them.  At first it surprised us but we trusted the guide as he could tell if the animal is relaxed or stressed out and he would tell us they are very relaxed.  It didn’t scare us.

宿泊施設は本当のテントから豪華なお部屋までいろいろですが、わたしたちはテントロッジと呼ばれるところに泊まりました。壁に当たる部分はテントの生地、屋根は木製で茅葺、ドア枠は木でガラスも入っていますし、テントという感覚はあまりありませんでした。冷房も暖房も入っています。バスルームもなかなか素敵でした。ただ、バスタブにシャワーがついたタイプしかなく、立って使えるシャワーは外でした。外と言っても誰からも見ることが出来ない造りにはなっていたのですが、大変心もとなく、お湯が結構広がって落ちてくるのでしっかり暖まれず寒くて、また行ったら中にシャワーがあるタイプのお部屋にしたいです。お部屋は決して豪華ではなく、広々としてはいますがラスティック。サファリですからね。

As for the accommodations, there are all sorts from a simple humble tent to quite a luxurious place, but we had what they call a “tented lodge”.  The “walls” were tent fabric but it had wooden ceiling, the roof was thatched and the frames and doors were in wood and glass, and it had airconditioning (both for cooling and heating).  It did not really feel like a ‘tent’.  The bathroom was very nice, too.  However, (the bathtub did have over-tub shower but) the main shower was outdoors.  It wasn’t where anybody was able to see you but I still didn’t feel comfortable to be out.  It was also very cold!  The shower sort of sprayed widely and it didn’t get enough water on me to warm me up.  If we go again I would like to stay in a room with an indoor shower.  The room isn’t luxurious at all, it’s nice and spacious but quite rustic.  It is a safari tent lodge after all.

ベッドヘッドの向こう側に荷物を置いたり洋服をかけるところがあり、その向こうにバスルームと別にトイレ、その外にシャワー。

There is an area where you can store suitcases, hang clothes etc behind the headboard, then there is a bathroom and a separate toilet, then the outside shower.

こちらはメインロッジ。ゲームドライブに行く前に集まるときや、お天気が良くない時の食事はこの中で。プールもありました。

This is the main lodge, where we gathered for the game drives or to have a meal when the weather wasn’t good enough for outside dining.  They also had a pool.

到着した日は良いお天気だったので、テラスでランチをしました。かんかん照りでしたが、日陰は心地よかったです。

It was very nice weather and was cool enough under the shade.

目の前に川があり、その向こうに初めての動物、イボいのししが２頭見えます。肉眼でもやっと見えるくらいなので、写真ではほぼわかりませんが。

There was a river quite far away and we saw the first animals beyond the river – 2 Warthogs.  We could just see them.

ズームすると見えます。食べる姿が前足を関節のところで折り曲げていて、不思議な格好です。

I took a photo using the zoom on my iPhone.  They look funny bending their forelegs towards them when they eat.

ここで初めていただいた食事、ランチ。パンがもそもそで美味しくない。

So this is the lunch on the day we checked in.  Bread was sort  of crumbly, not nice.

夫は、「タパス」数種類を選んでいました。行った先々で「タパス」というメニューを見かけましたが、タパスじゃないよね〜、というもの。ちょこちょこと少量ずついろいろいただくスタイルのことをタパスと呼んでいるようでした。ほぼ必ずどこにもあったのがフムス。もう、フムスは見たくないくらい。しかも味付けがあまり美味しくなかったです。

My husband had a few “tapas”.  They aren’t really ‘tapas’ but they seemed to call small plates tapas wherever we went, but nothing to do with Spanish tapas.  One thing every restaurant seems to have is Hummous, I got to the point where I felt I didn’t want to see it any longer.  This one wasn’t very nice either.

わたしはチキンとローストしたお野菜、にしてみたのですが、ローストしたお野菜の半分が小さくて黄色い円盤みたいな形をしたスクウォッシュで、水っぽくて苦くて苦手なのです。ロースト野菜にまさかスクウォッシュがそんなに入っているなんて。他は人参とカリフラワーとズッキーニでした。チキンは見てわかるように火が通り過ぎてパサパサで、味が濃かったです。そして、ソースはヨーグルト。

I had grilled chicken and roasted vegetables.  More than a half of the roasted vegetables were those small yellow squashes, which I didn’t expect to be in “roasted vegetables”.  They were very watery and bitter.  The rest of the vegetables were carrot, cauliflower and zucchini.  The sauce was plain yogurt.  Chicken was, I think you can see, overcooked and dry and had very strong seasonings.

どちらもおいしくなかったので物足らずにアイスクリームをオーダーしたのですけど、これもおいしくなかったです。

As we didn’t enjoy them, we went for ice cream but sadly they weren’t very nice either.

ということで、この後も食事はあまり美味しくなかったですが、目的だったゲームドライブは大満足でした。

All in all, the meals (except breakfast) weren’t very nice but we were very happy with the game drives and after all that was why we were there.
