さて、サファリの動物に戻ります。たった２日で旅行の中の割合としては小さいのですが、写真の数は多いのです。

Now, back to our Safari.  Although it was only 2 days out of 14 days, I took a lot of photos!

次に見た大物は、サイ。サイにはシロサイとクロサイがいるそうで、わたしたちが見たのはシロサイ。シロサイはクロサイに比べて大人しく、あまり人を襲うことはないのだそうです。滞在中何度かシロサイには遭遇しましたが、クロサイはみかけませんでした。他のグループの方は両方見たとおっしゃっていたのでshamwari にも存在してはいるようですが、調べてみるとクロサイはブッシュの奥深いところにいてあまり奥から出てこないので発見しにくいそうです。

Next major animal was Rhino.  Apparently there are white rhinos and black rhinos and we only saw white ones.  I read that white ones are more timid and don’t often attack people.  We saw them on a few different occasions but we never saw black ones.  Some other group of people were saying they saw both so they do exist in Shamwari, but black rhinos tend to stay in deep inside the bush and don’t often come out.

ジープで走っていてカーブを曲がったところにいて、慌ててブレーキをかけました。お母さんと子供２頭。大人の雄は大抵単独で行動するのだそうです。あまりに近かったので、ガイドさん、ジープをバックさせました。けれど、草を食べつつ、サイは少しずつジープに近づきます。ガイドさんが近すぎると判断すると、また少しバック。

When we went around the curve, there they were!  The guide had to brake the jeep as we were very close, then he backed up a little.  They were a mother and 2 children.  Although we backed up, they slowly came towards us as they ate the grass in the road, then the driver backed up a little more, but the rhinos kept walking towards us slowly.

チャージしてくるわけではなくゆっくり歩いてくるのですが、威嚇してるのかな？と思ったらガイドさんが「この子たちは良い子だから大丈夫、リラックスしてるし。」とおっしゃっていました。

They were not charging, they were walking very slowly but I was wondering if they were trying to frighten us, but the guide said “these are very good, they are fine, very relaxed.”

３度くらいバックするのを繰り返したら、サイは他のところに行きました。

After we backed up 3 times, I think, they moved somewhere else.

こちらは別のところで１頭だけ。

We saw this one somewhere else on the following day.

こちらも別のところでですが、前日見かけたのと同じ親子かな？サイがいるところには、寄生虫を食べる鳥が必ずいます。黒とブルーの羽でした。

Then these at another place.  I guess they are the same mother and children we saw on the day before.  You always see those black & blue birds around or on rhinos, they eat the insects on rhinos skin.
