Si Chuan Dou Hua (四川豆花飯荘)

今日は、かなり久しぶりにお目にかかるお友達、先日ご一緒したお友達と3人でランチをご一緒しました。この時期は夏休みを挟んでいて、お子さんがおられる方は夏休みは日本で過ごす方が多いのでほとんどのお友達と久しぶりです。

I had lunch with 2 friends today – I hadn’t seen one of them for a couple of months. As many of my friends who have children were away during the summer holiday, I hadn’t seen them for a while.

四川豆花飯荘の麻婆豆腐が食べたということで、何度かこのメンバーで行ったパークロイヤルホテルの四川豆花飯荘に行きました。

We wanted to have Mapo Tofu so went to Si Chuan Dou Hwa in the Parkroyal Hotel on Beach road.

写真を撮り忘れたのですが、最初に出てくる突き出しのようなもの、激まず!ひどすぎる。。。シャキシャキした食感のものを大昔駄菓子屋さんで買ったオレンジ味の粉とお水に漬けたのかな?と思うような味。前もそうだったのに、また食べてしまいました。3人とも1口ずつ食べてあとは口をつけずですが、これもきちんとお金を取られるのがなんだか悔しい。

I forgot to take a photo, but they served us a little amuse first – which we all disliked and didn’t have more than one piece each. It was diced vegetable (some crunchy vegetable, maybe Jicama?) soaked in some sort of orange flavour but it tasted quite powdery and artificial, really bad… It doesn’t seem fair that they charge for it as we didn’t order it.

最初に出て来たのは、なんだ、こりゃ、って写真になってしまっていますが(笑)、豚バラ肉のガーリックソース。ご一緒した方が以前オーダーされた時にメニューとは違う形で出て来たとおっしゃっていたのですが、その通り、全く違う形。メニューでは(こちらをご覧ください→https://www.panpacific.com/content/dam/pphg-revamp/en/prsin/dining/si-chuan-dou-hua-restaurant/prsin-offer-100-sichuan-delights-menu.pdf )キュウリの細切りを豚バラ肉で巻いたものを重ねて上からソースをかけてあるのですが、全然巻いてません。そして、キュウリは影も形もありません。底に敷いてあるのかと思いましたが、ありませんでした。スタッフの方にお聞きしたところ、「この写真だと何かわらかないからああいう写真にしたものをメニューに載せている」と全く悪びれる様子なく説明されました(笑)。詐欺??(笑)甘辛くて(辛いと言ってもそれほど辛くはない)ニンニクが効いてなかなか美味しかったのですが、ここにきゅうりがあったらもっと美味しそうでした。

Apologies for the awful photo, the focus is on the wrong part, but it was supposed to be thinly sliced pork belly wrapped around cucumber sticks with some drizzle of sauce according to the photo on their menu. However when the dish came it looked completely different and there was no cucumber at all. We asked one of the staff about the difference and her reply was “If we used a photo of this nobody knows what it is, so we used that photo.” How strange… I’m sure you can show a photo of this as it is and just put a description what it is. It did taste quite nice, not very spicy but there was a kick and it was also a little sweet, but some addition of crunchy cucumber would have made it even nicer.

点心のメニューから、茹で餃子。ちょうど3つ。これも一応辛そうなソースがかかっていましたが、そう辛くなかったです。もう少し辛くても良いかも。

We ordered a couple of things from their Dim Sum menu. These are boiled dumplings (3 of them) with Sichuan sauce. It wasn’t very spicy, I would have liked the sauce to be a little more spicy but it was enjoyable enough.

焼き餃子。6つありました。羽餃子のように見えますが羽根部分と餃子部分は全くくっついていなくて、別に丸く焼いた(揚げた?)羽を上からのせてありました。中国風は、こうなのかな?

The other is pan-fried dumplings, there were 6 of them. In Japanese we call this style as “with wings”, to describe the small thin crunchy bits that join the dumplings in the pan, but here it was more like a cape or something as the crispy sheet was not attached to the dumplings but laid on top. It was obviously cooked separately (it seemed deep-fried) – I guess this is the Chinese way.


何かお野菜も、ということで、アスパラガスの炒め物。

We wanted some vegetable so ordered stir-fried asparagus.

そして、一番のお目当の麻婆豆腐。前回、前々回と今回は少し味が違っていたような気がしました。今日のは四川山椒の味より豆板醤の味が勝っていて酸味が強めだったような。お友達は今日のは特に辛いと思うとおっしゃっていましたが、わたしは前回の方が辛かったような??辛さもいろいろあって、人によってどの辛さに強い、弱いがある気がするのでそのせいでしょうか。まぁ、何ヶ月も前に食べた記憶の中のなのであてにはなりませんが、2回前に行ったときの写真を見ると四川山椒とおねぎが今回よりかなりたくさんかかっているように見えます。わたしは前の方が好みかな、と思いましたが、今日のも美味しくいただきました。

Then, our main purpose of coming here, Mapo Tofu. We thought it tasted different from the last two times we had eaten it here – it tasted quite strongly of Dobanjan (Chinese chilli sauce) so was a little sour and spicy with chilli. One friend thought it was much more spicy this time while I thought it wasn’t as spicy as the last 2 times – probably because there was more Sichuan pepper before and more chilli this time. Some of us seem to be more sensitive to different type of spiciness. It could be that we just remember wrongly, of course. It’s been a few months since we were there last. However, the photo I took when we were there a couple of times ago seems to show much more Sichuan pepper and green onions.

デザートは1人1品ずつオーダー。わたしはアーモンドスープ(胡麻餡のお団子入り)。ちょっと冷めていたのが残念でしたが、おいしくいただきました。個人的には中華のデザートはあまり甘くないものが多く、これももう少し甘い方が好みですが、体にはよさそう。

We ordered a dessert each. I had Almond Soup (with dumplings with sesame filling). I would have liked it hotter (it was just lukewarm) but it was enjoyable enough. In general, Chinese sweets are not as sweet as Japanese ones, I personally would like it a little sweeter but I’m sure this is better for you.

お1人は、マンゴープリン。

One friend had Mango Pudding.

もうお1人は、桂花陳酒入り白玉団子。思っておられたのは違ったみたいで、小さな白玉団子がたくさん入っていて、お酒が効いていたようでした。

The other friend had Dumplings in Osmanthus sweet wine. It was different from what she had expected, the soup had a lot of small dumplings and strongly tasted of the wine.

他にお茶をそれぞれにオーダーし、白いご飯を2つオーダーしました。ほぼ完食だったので、丁度良い量だったような気がします。UOBのカードで支払うと20%引きになるそうで、お友達がお持ちだったので割引が適応され、とてもお安く、1人35ドル強でした。

We ordered tea each and 2 bowls of plain rice. We finished almost everything so I guess we ordered the right amount. One of the friends payed with a UOB card, which gave us a 20% discount, and with this it was about S$35 per person, which is very inexpensive.

なのですが、食べ終わった時点ではちょうど良い感じだったのですが、食後におしゃべりしているうちにどんどん更にお腹が膨れてしまいちょっと辛いくらい苦しくなってしまいました。この数日ヘイズ指数も多めのようで、そのせいなのかどうなのか偏頭痛が出たりもして昨日は一日中痛み止めを飲んでいましたし、眠れず酷い寝不足だったせいもあったのかもしれませんが、やはり8分目でやめておくべきでした。その割には夜もしっかり食べたのですが(笑)。

I thought I ate just about the right amount but as we were chatting after eating I started to get more and more full – so full that I felt very uncomfortable. I’ve been having headaches, migrane yesterday, have been taking painkillers often – I was told the haze is a little bad recently, I also hardly slept last night, that might be why – so that may have made me feel more uncomfortable but I probably should have stopped eating before I felt full. Having said that, I didn’t have any problem with having dinner at all.
