今日も、９時から１２時到着予定のデリバリーがあった以外、夕方まで予定のない日。デリバリーは午前中か午後か一日中到着予定なので時間が読めません。連絡なく来るものも多く、留守だとあとが面倒。今日は１件１２時前に着く予定だったデリバリーがちょうど１２時ごろに来たので出かける用意をしていたところ、運良くもう１件のデリバリー（こちらは連絡なしに来てしまいます）も来たので助かりました。スーパーのデリバリーはもっと細かい時間指定が出来るのですが、他はこんな感じです。ほとんど細かい時間指定が出来て、しかも時間通りに来る日本は特別です。留守でも再配達してもられますしね。ここでは再配達はなく、どこかに取りに行かなくてはいけません。シンガポールも似たような状況でした。色々な面で、日本は特別。
There was going to be a delivery between 9.00am and 12.00pm, but other than that we had no plan until evening. Deliveries here tend to be like this – the bracket is in the morning or in the afternoon at best, often all day, some give you no idea and if you miss it you have to go somewhere to pick it up, a lot of trouble, not like in Japan when you have a 2 hour bracket for almost any deliveries and they are almost always on time and if you miss it you can just call them to make another delivery arrangement. In Singapore it was similar to here, so I’ve learned that Japan is the special place, not the other way round, in many aspects. The delivery did come just around 12.00pm and we were in our car getting ready to go out, then another delivery arrived. We were lucky not to miss it, it was the one that doesn’t let you know when at all when it will come.
ちょうど１２時ごろにデリバリーが来たので、それから Arundel に出かけました。パンがきれていたのと、明日の夕食に使いたいお肉を評判の良いお肉屋さんで買いたかったのです。なんどもアップしていますが、建物が素敵でついつい写真を撮ってしまいます。小さな街なのでいつも同じ写真なのですけどね。
After receiving them, we went to Arundel because we needed to get some bread and also wanted to buy pork in a butchers there that has an excellent reputation. I’ve blogged Arundel many times before but I still cannot help taking photos as the buildings are so attractive. It’s a very small town so the photos are basically the same.
お買い物の前に、まずランチ。Arundel には度々行っていますがまだカフェに入ったことがなかったので、今日初めてです。目についたカフェ、「Motte & Bailey (M & B)」に入ってみました。入った時は、１階は満席でしたがちょうど終わった人たちがたくさん出る用意をしていたのですぐに座れました。あっという間にガラガラになったのですが、またあっという間にいっぱいになり、何回転もするようでした。
Before shopping, we had lunch. Although we’d been to Arundel many times, we hadn’t tried any cafes there so this was the first time. We went in the cafe we saw first, “Motte & Bailey (M & B)”. We got there a little before 12.30 and the ground floor was full but many of the customers were just finishing and getting ready to leave so we didn’t have to wait long to get a table. Most people left within a few minutes and it looked quite empty but then 10 minutes later it was full again.
因みにこのカフェもですが、イギリスではパブでもカフェでも犬連れの方が大勢おられます。お肉屋さんなど食材店にも連れて入っています。小さな犬だけではなく、大きな犬も。どの犬もよく躾けられていて大人しいですし、わたしは犬が好きなので気になりませんが、犬が苦手な方やアレルギーがある方も多いですし、衛生面の問題が気になる方も多いでしょうし、ちょっとびっくりします。昔からパブでは犬連れの方をよく見かけましたが、お肉屋さんやカフェに連れて入るのは最近のことのようです。どこに行っても犬がいるので犬がいる人にとっては連れて外出出来てとても有難いことですが、犬が大嫌いな人は大変だろうと思います。
Incidentally, in England, people bring their dogs with them into pubs, cafes – even in the butcher’s shop! Not just little dogs but quite large ones, too. They are all very well behaved and never a problem but there are many people who dislike dogs or are allergic to dogs, and I’m sure some people are concerned in terms of hygiene (or is it only Japanese who would be??). I love dogs so I don’t personally mind them, I’m just surprised. I think pubs were always dog friendly but I’m told that bringing them in cafes and shops is a more recent thing. I do wonder how those who dislike them cope, because we see them everywhere.
話がそれました。ランチは、わたしはトマト、ベーコン、アボカドのトースティー、夫はエッグ・ベネディクト。イギリスのパンも焼けば外はカリッとして中はふわっとなるのでおいしくいただけます。ただ、イギリスのベーコンは特に塩辛いものが多く、このサンドイッチも塩辛すぎたのでベーコンをほとんど外していただきました（笑）。
Anyway, my lunch was Bacon, Tomato & Avocado Toastie and my husband had Eggs Benedict. I don’t like bread here very much as I’ve written but once it is toasted it can be nice enough, so this was quite nice. The only thing is that I find some bacon here is too salty for me to enjoy and this was, so I took most of it out and enjoyed the rest.
パンは昨日も書きましたがまだ美味しいパンが見つからないので、今日はよく行くグルメショップ「Pallant Of Arundel」で買ってみました。お肉はお隣にあるお肉屋さんで。何度も賞を獲得しているお肉屋さんです。少し前にソーセージを買いましたが、お肉の塊を買うのは今回初めて。明日はローストポークの予定なので、それ用のお肉を買いました。美味しく出来ると良いのですが。
As I wrote yesterday, we haven’t found bread we like, specially Baguettes, so we bought some in “Pallant Of Arundel”, we’ll see how they are soon. Then we bought pork for roasting in the butcher’s next door. We have bought some sausages there the other day but this is the first time we buy any other meat, so I hope it’ll be good.
こうしてタイプしていると、指先が冷たくなっていて少し寒いです。セントラルヒーティングはタイマーをセットしてあり、お昼前に一旦オフになるので、また夕方オンになるまで少し寒いのですが、これまで指先が冷たくなった記憶は最初の頃だけだったような気が。今日は今外気は８度、昨日とそれほど変わらないのですけどお天気があまり良くないせいでしょうか。
As I type this, my fingers are very cold. Central heating is on a timer and goes off, I think, a little before lunch time and doesn’t turn on itself until later in the evening so it does get a little cold around this time. It says 8C, so not so different from yesterday, but there wasn’t as much sun today, maybe that’s why.
日本、香港、シンガポールとずっと基本的に金曜日の夜を外食の日にしていたので、夫が退職した今も金曜日は外食。なのですが、今日バレエを見に出かけるのでついでに外食することにし、代わりに昨日お家ご飯でした。
We’ve always had dinner out on Fridays in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Now that my husband is retired, weekends don’t mean so much but we are still going out on Fridays in general. However, we are going out today to the ballet so we’ll eat out tonight, that was why we had dinner at home yesterday.
