コロナウイルスは、まだまだ心配な状況ですね。シンガポールでも感染者が増えていますし、マスク不足も困った状況ですし。とにかく、早く終息してほしいと祈るばかり。

Corona virus is still spreading, it is very worrying.  I read that more people are coming down with it in Singapore, too.  All I can do is to pray that it’ll be controlled soon.

今日は嵐が来るということでしたが、お昼の時点でそれほど風も強くなく雨も小雨だったので、お友達とのランチの予定を決行しました。イギリスに来るにあたってとてもお世話になっているお友達ご夫婦と、１ヶ月ちょっとぶりくらいでお目にかかりました。場所は、我が家から車で１０分ほどのところにある、Goodwood の「Farmer Butcher Chef」というレストラン。わたしたちは少し前に一度行ってアラカルトのランチをいただきましたが、雰囲気もよく美味しかったですし、お友達ご夫婦も以前から興味があるレストランだったので、今日のサンデーローストをご一緒することになりました。

We were worried about the storm but it didn’t seem so bad around lunch time and wasn’t raining much either so we decided to go ahead with the planned lunch with our friends, it’s been a little over a month since we saw them last.  We went to “Farmer Butcher Chef” in Goodwood, where we had lunch a couple of weeks ago once and liked it.  Our friends were also interested in this restaurant so we went there for a Sunday roast.

イギリス（UK全体にですが）では、昔から日曜日のお昼はサンデー・ローストと言って、ローストしたお肉とお野菜などでしっかり食事をするのが伝統です。夫が子供の頃は、マイ中日曜日はサンデーローストが当たり前だったようです。当時日曜日はお店もお休みでしたので、時間がかかるローストの食事は時間がある日曜日の家族揃ってランチに食べていたのだろうと想像します。ローストするお肉は、ビーフ、ポーク、チキン、ラムあたりが一般的だと思います。なぜか日本ではローストビーフというと生焼けのお肉を薄くスライスして冷たくして食べるようなのですが、本来ローストビーフは暖かいところをいただきます。付け合わせは、ローストビーフにはヨークシャープディングをつけますが、普通は他のお肉にはヨークシャープディングはつけません（我が家は好きなのでつけますし、今日のランチでも全部についていました。）他には大抵カリカリのローストポテトと茹でたお野菜が２、３種類というのが家庭では一般的。ポークならアップルソース、ラムならミントソースがつくことが多く、ビーフにはホースラディッシュをつける人も多いです。でも、多分、今ではサンデーローストを食べるご家庭は少ないのかもしれません。少なくとも、わたしの周りでは毎週のようにサンデーローストを食べる人はいないようです。

In the UK, traditionally people have a roast dinner at lunch time on Sundays, at least that was the way when my husband was growing up.  In those days no shops were open so people probably didn’t have a lot to do other than gathering at a meal.  In Japan for some reason people call thinly sliced almost raw beef (just the outside is seared) served cold “Roast Beef”, I wonder why that is.

今日は、全員ローストのセットをいただきました。夫とお友達のご主人はビーフ、わたしとお友達はポーク。ローストのセットにはどれもヨークシャープディング、ローストポテト、スィードのマッシュ、カリフラワーチーズがついてきました。すごく大きなヨークシャープディング！ポークにはりんごを細く千切りにしたものが乗って来ましたが、グッドアイデアだと思いました。もちろん、クラックリング付き。ビーフにはビーフと玉ねぎのハッシュぽいものがついていました。写真で見るより量はたっぷり。

Today, we all had a set of a roast,  my friend and I had pork, her husband and my husband had beef.  All the roast set came with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, mashed swede, cauliflower cheese. The Yorkshire pudding was huge!  Pork had some thin sticks of apple (and something else) on top, which we thought was a good idea, it added some freshness.  It also came with good crackling.  Beef had something like beef & onion hash or croquette.  The photos don’t seem to show how large the portions were.

ポークは少しドライで少しポークの臭みもありましたが、美味しくいただける範囲でした。ポークは日本のもののように甘くて柔らかいものは他では食べたことがありません、比べてはいけません（と自分に言い聞かせる）。ビーフは結構硬かった様子でした。ポテトは外はカリカリで中はふわっとしていて、美味しかったです。

I thought the pork was a little dry and very slightly gamy but enjoyable enough.  I must not compare it to pork in Japan, for some reason pork in Japan is very tender and sweet, I’ve never had such pork outside Japan so this is probably normal.  I think the beef was quite tough.  Roast potatoes were good, crunchy outside and fluffy inside.

 

 

デザートは、お友達ご夫婦はアップルクランブル・スフレ。わたしたちも前回いただきましたが、美味しいです。

Our friends shared Apple Crumble Soufflé, we had it last time and it was very good.

夫とわたしは、フォンダンチョコラ。夫がほとんど食べましたが。

We shared (well, I think my husband had about 80%) Fondant Chocolat.

真ん中に暖炉があり、そこでお部屋が２つに分かれているのですが、今回は暖炉側ではない側。暖炉側の方が雰囲気が良い気がします。

There is a fireplace in the middle and the room is divided into two sections. This time we sat the other side of the fireplace, but I think the fireplace side is nicer.

ガス入りのお水を１本と赤ワイン１本をシェアーして、１組７０ポンド弱（９９００円、１２５シンガポールドル）。

We shared a bottle of water and a bottle of red wine and the bill was a little less than 70 pounds per couple.

たくさんおしゃべりをして、キャッチアップをして、とても楽しいひとときでした。

We had a lot of catch up and had a lovely time.

ランチを終えて家に戻った頃から風がさらに強くなっているようですし、雨脚も一時結構強くなりました。家の中から双眼鏡で例のお庭のヒヤシンスを見てみたら、ライラック色の花が咲いています。この風の中ではお庭にも出たくないので（何か飛んで来る可能性もありますからね）、明日観察してみます。

Around the time when we got home from lunch, I think the wind started to get stronger and it rained heavily for a short time as well.  I had a look at the hyacinths in the garden from inside the house and saw lilac coloured flowers blooming, but I don’t want to go out to the garden in this weather, you just never know, something may fly and hit you.  I’ll have to look at it closer tomorrow.
