昨日書き忘れたのですが、実は２日前の夜になんかちょっと喉が変な感じがするな、と思い始め、一昨日には乾いた咳が出始めてしまいました。他は軽い頭痛があるだけで（頭痛はよくあるのでそのせいかどうかわからない）熱もなく鼻水が出たり鼻が詰まることもなかったので軽い風邪のようではあったのですが、乾いた咳で始まったのでコロナが気になり、念の為一昨日と昨日自分でできるテストをして結果は陰性。咳と言ってもたまに出る程度ですが、昨日のディナーは体調によってはキャンセルしないといけないかも、と思っていました。結局夕方になっても熱も出ず体調も良かったですし咳もほとんど出ていずテストも陰性だったので、結局キャンセルせずに決行しました。

I forgot to mention yesterday but I’ve come down with a cold.  A couple of nights ago, I felt a little strange in my throat and on the day before yesterday I started coughing a little.  Apart from that and a very light headache, for which painkillers work well (I get headache often anyway so I don’t know if this one is to do with the cold), there was no other symptoms of cold, no fever, no runny or blocked nose.  However as it started with dry coughs I was a bit worried about Covid so I did do the tests – on the day before yesterday and one yesterday – the results were both negative.  I’m not coughing a lot, just occasionally, but I was thinking I probably should cancel yesterday’s dinner with our friends but I was feeling totally fine, didn’t have any fever and seldom coughed, so in the end we went ahead.

ここ何年か風邪をひくこともなかったので、イギリスに来て初めての風邪。明後日３度目のコロナワクチンを打つ予定だったので、このタイミングでなぜ？と悲しいですが、体調がよくないときにワクチンを打つのは不安だったので１週間ちょっと先に延ばすことにしました。オミクロンが心配なので少しでも早く打っておきたかったのに、本当に残念です。でも、大した風邪ではないのが救いです。いつもは酷い鼻炎になることが多く、鼻が詰まると眠れないのが結構辛いのですが、今のところそれもなく、薬も必要ない程度なのですぐに良くなりそうです。

I hadn’t had a cold for quite a few years certainly this is the first one I’ve had since we moved.  However this is such bad timing because I was going to get my Covid booster jab on the day after tomorrow.  Even though it’s just a very gentle cold I don’t want to have the jab when I have a cold because I may get bad side effects when I’m not totally well so we cancelled the appointment and made a new appointment a week or so further away.  I’m so disappointed with this as I really wanted to get the booster as soon as I could, specially as I worry about Omicron.  Still, at least the cold is very light.  I usually get a runny nose then blocked nose, which I find hard to cope with because I cannot sleep, but so far I haven’t had any of that.

１２月も中旬に近づいて来てお忙しい日々をお過ごしの方が多いかと思いますが、わたしたちは子供もいませんし、イギリスにいるお友達は少ないですし、クリスマスはホテルに宿泊しますのでそれほど忙しくはありませんが、ただ、クリスマスツリーを購入するのは毎年ちょっとしたストレスになるように思います。毎回、ちょうど良い大きさ、高さの、そして形が良いツリーが見つかるかどうかわからず、一部葉っぱが全然ないところがある木しかなかったこともありましたし、行ってみたら（その年はツリーが不足したようで）ほとんどなかった、なんてこともありました。行ってみるまで状況がわからないので、気に入るツリーを見つけるまでなんとなく落ち着かない気持ちになります。

Now that we are getting close to the middle of December, I suppose many people are getting very busy.  As for us, we have no children and not many friends here, and we are going to stay at a hotel for Christmas (at least that’s the plan at the moment), so we aren’t so busy.  However, getting a Christmas tree is a little stressful.  You just don’t know until you go to a nursery if you can find a tree of the right size, right height and with a good shape.  One year we had to have a tree with a large gap of branches, and one year there were hardly any trees left by the time we went.  Until you find the one you are happy with it’s always a little stressful.

アメリカではサンクスギビングが終わったらすぐ、日本でも結構早くクリスマスのデコレーションをされる方が多い印象です。イギリスでは以前は基本的にはあまり早くからデコレーションを出さないのが主流だったと思いますが、最近は結構早く飾る方も多くなっているみたいです。ただ、やはり、フレッシュのツリーの場合は早すぎるとクリスマスまできれいに保てないので、大体１２月始めの頃に買われる方が多いのではと思います。

I know people put their Christmas trees and decorations up right after Thanksgiving in the US, and also quite early in Japan, but in England people didn’t used to put them up until quite close to Christmas.  However, it seems to be changing and some people decorate their houses quite early now.  Although when you use the real fresh Christmas tree you don’t want to get it too early, otherwise it’ll look dried out by Christmas, and certainly by New Year, it seems that lots of people get them in the first week in December.

ということで、わたしたちももう少し早く買いに出るつもりだったのですが、お天気が悪く雨がよく降っていたので延ばし延ばしになり、今日行って来ました。香港やシンガポールでは配達してもらうのが主流でしたが、イギリスはほとんど自分たちの車で持ち帰ります。幸か不幸か香港や日本と違って家の天井が低くお部屋も狭いので飾れるツリーも小さめなので、ギリギリ車にのせられる大きさです。わたしたちが買ったツリーより大きなツリーはほとんどないようだったので、やはりイギリスは大きなツリーを入れられるお家は少ないのだと思います。香港でもシンガポールでも結構大きなツリーを買っていましたが、もっと大きなツリーもたくさんありました。

We had intended to buy our tree earlier this week but the weather hasn’t been good and we didn’t want to buy one in rain, so we’d been putting it off and finally went to get one today.  In Hong Kong and Singapore, we used to have one delivered like most people, but here most people carry theirs in their car themselves.   Fortunately (or unfortunately), the ceilings here are low and the room, where the tree will be, is relatively small so we can only buy a small tree, which just fits in our car.  We didn’t see many taller trees so I guess most people buy about the same height as ours or smaller.  In Hong Kong and Singapore, we used to get quite a tall tree but we saw many trees that were even taller than that.

You choose a tree then the staff will put it through a machine so it’ll have a net sock to keep it tight so it’s easier to take home.

置かれているときに倒して置かれているので片方の枝が上に上がっているのですが、しばらくすると落ち着くのではと思います。結構形の良いツリーが見つかりました。高さも丁度良かったです。数日中にクリスマスソングを流しながら、夫と飾り付けをします。

As the trees are kept leaning on one side, they all had one side of them pushed up, but hopefully the branches will come down.  We think it’s quite a nice shape and seems just the right height for our living room.  We’ll be decorating it together, with Christmas songs playing, as we always do in a few days time.
