今日は節分ですね、みなさん、恵方巻きを召し上がったのでしょうか。わたしが子供の頃は恵方巻きなんて習慣は、少なくともわたしたちが住んでいたところではなかったですし、夫はお魚のお寿司は好きですがご飯メインのお寿司は好まないので２人とも食べたことありません。夫が日本人だったら、多分、わたしも流行（？）に乗っかって作っていたかな、と思います。
It’s Setsubun today in Japan, when you celebrate the beginning of the spring. These days many people eat a large norimaki (Japanese rolled up sushi) looking towards a certain direction (it changes every year) for good luck, which is called Ehomaki. Where I grew up, we didn’t have such a custom but for some reason it has spread all over Japan. As I didn’t grow up with it I’ve never had it in that way and my husband doesn’t like that kind of sushi (although he does like sushi with fish) I’ve never made them so neither of us has ever had it that way. If my husband were Japanese I guess I would have been joining this trend. People also throw some dried soy beans from inside the house to outside (to get rid of bad luck) and inside the house for good luck this day.
今日は、ヘイスティング近くにお住まいのお友達ご夫婦とランチをご一緒しました。前回お目にかかったのは１１月初めだったので、約３ヶ月ぶりくらいですね。もうすぐ３人目のお孫さんが出来るそうで、ますますお忙しくなられると思います。
We had lunch with our friends, who live near Hastings, today to catch up with each other. The last time when we meet it was early November, so it’s been almost 3 months.
今日のランチの場所は、Lewes という街の近くの Ringmer にある「The Cock Inn」というパブでした。これまでほとんど、他の場所の他のパブで会っていたのでそろそろ違うところに、と夫が検索して提案したパブです。お友達ご夫婦からもわたしたちからも、大体車で１時間くらいのところにあります。
We had lunch at a pub called “The Cock Inn” in Ringmer near a town called Lewes. We’ve met at another pub in another place many times, so we wanted a change and my husband researched and suggested this place but none of us has been there. It’s around imid way between us and our friends, about an hour’s drive.
男性２人は、ビーフ＆エールパイ。美味しかったようですが、夫は塩辛かったと言っていました。塩辛過ぎたり味がなかったり、よくあります。
Both men had Beef & Ale Pie. I think it was good but my husband found it very salty. Usual problem in England – too much salt or not enough salt.
お友達は、シーバス。とても美味しかったようでした。
Our friend had Sea Bass, which she enjoyed very much.
わたしは、ソーセージと玉ねぎのチャツネのチャバタサンド、コールスローとサラダ付き。とても美味しかったです！時々、ソーセージがすごく美味しくないこともありますが、比較的安全牌。それでも、まぁまぁなのと美味しいのと結構差が大きいのですが、ここはとても美味しかったです。少し入っていたマスタードが良いアクセントになっていました。パンも結構美味しかったです。
I had a sauasage & onion chutney sandwich with coleslaw and a salad and it was very nice. I have had some quite awful sausages but in general sausages are a safe bet in England. Some sausage sandwiches are awful, many are just so-so but this one was very nice. There was a little mustard on the bread, which gave a little kick and the bread was nice, too.
夫とわたしは、デザートにスティッキー・トフィー・プディングをシェアー、軽めで甘過ぎず美味しかったです。時々大量の甘い甘いソースがかかっていることがありますが、ここは適量でした。
Then my husband and I shared Sticky Toffee Puddhing. It was quite light, not too sweet and very nice. Sometimes you get so much sweet sauce but this one had just the right amount for me.
お友達ご夫婦は、アプリコットトルテ、だったかな？ブラッド・オレンジ・シャーベット付き。
Our friends had, I think, Apricot Torte, which came with blood orange sorbet.
あれこれお話をしてキャッチアップをして、春にはまたチューリップを見に行きましょう、とお別れしました。
We enjoyed catching up with each other, and parted saying we should get together for visiting a park that will be full of tulips in the spring.
ランチの後、近くのLewes を歩きたいと思っていたのですが、出かける時に出ていた太陽は影を潜めてすっかり暗い空になっていたので取りやめにして帰ってきました。
We were planning to stop on the way home at Lewes, which was very close to the pub, but the sky was looking very dark and it was a bit cold to enjoy a walk so we decided not to and just came home.
