今日は、夏至、一年で一番昼間が長い日。明日からまた、少しずつ昼間が短くなります。日本にいた時に夏至も冬至もほとんど気にしたことはなかったのですが、イギリスにいると結構意識します。多分、こちらは夏と冬の昼間の時間が大きく違うのと、冬の昼間が短すぎるせいだと思います。夏至には、「あ〜、あしたから日が短くなって行ってしまうんだな〜。」と残念な気がしますし、冬至には、「やれやれ、やっとこれから日が長くなって行く！」と冬の終わりが見えてくる気がします。

It is the Solstice today, the longest day.  The days will get shorter from tomorrow.  When we lived in Japan I don’t think we thought of solstices  (it’s interesting that they use the same word for the longest and the shortest days, in Japan we have different words for each) but I feel we do here, probably because the difference between the longest and the shortest days are so large and the days get so short in winter.  On the longest day, I feel a little sad that the days will be getting shorter now and on the shortest day I feel happy that the days will start getting longer and the spring isn’t too far away.

さて、今日の夕食は、「私と夫と猫の幸せ生活」から「ポーク with ズッキーニ」、簡単で美味しい。先日のハンバーグのソースと良く似ていますが、味付けにお醤油と豆板醤を使うからか意外と食べると違うものに感じられます。ズッキーニの巨大なのが１本冷蔵庫にあって早く使わなくてはと思っていたので、夏に作りたくなるこのお料理にしました。ズッキーニはイギリスでは１年中手に入りますが、なんとなく夏のお料理という気がします。この時に書いたレシピと大体同じ材料の量で作りました。

Today’s dinner was “Pork with Zucchini (courgette)”, which is from this blog.  It takes time because of the cut of the pork, but it is very easy and tasty.  Although it seems very similar to the hamburg sauce we cooked the other day (and had left-overs of only yesterday) somehow it seemed to taste quite different, maybe because of soy sauce and Dobanjan.  There was a very large courgette in the fridge that I wanted to use so chose this recipe; it seems summery.  I know we can get courgettes all year around in England, they are available only in summer in Japan and I guess that’s why it seems summery to me.  I more or less used the same amount of the ingredients that I wrote in this post.
