今年も残り少なくなり、今日を入れてあと３日になりましたね。日本ではクリスマスはすっかり終わって、お正月のご準備にお忙しいのでしょうか。最近は旅行に出る方も多くなり年末の大掃除もお節作りも昔のように see a はしなくなってきている印象ですが、どうなのでしょう。
Only 2 more days before the new year. I guess people are busy preparing for the new year and have forgotten about Christmas by now in Japan. I have a feeling, though, that many people now go somewhere over the new year and don’t do as thorough an end-of-year cleaning as they used to.
わたしたちは、何を思ったか、ご近所の皆さんを「 Drinks & Nibbles 」にとお誘いしてしまいました。一部の方を除いてご近所の方達とお話をする機会がほとんどないですし、せっかくのフェスティブシーズンなのでと思ったのですが、やはり１週間くらい前から気持ちが落ち着かず後悔（笑）。住んでいるクロース（道はメインの道から入って来てすぐにクエスチョンマークを描いていて最後のお家から元のメインの道にはバックして戻ることになる）には７軒のお家があり、１軒はお若いご夫婦と小さなお子さん、１軒は退職された女性お１人、他は全部退職した夫婦。全員揃うとお子さん２人を入れて１6人で、以前お隣のお隣にお住まいだったお友達もお誘いしたので１４人ですが、お隣のご主人がインフルエンザか酷い風邪にかかられ、まだ咳が酷いので欠席と昨日ご連絡があり、全員で１4人になりました。
Well, I don’t know what made us do this, but we hosted a drinks & nibbles party with our neighbours. Except for our next door neighbours on one side, we don’t have a lot of chances to see the others, and it is the festive season, so we decided to invite everybody in our small close, but I started to feel quite nervous about a week or so ago and regretted it a bit. My usual story.
There are 7 houses in our close, one is occupied by a young family with 2 small children and one is occupied by a retired lady but all the others are retired couples like us. So it’s 15 people including the children and us and we also invited the lady who used to live in the house next door but one to us, so it was going to be 16 in total. However our next door neighbour (the husband) came down with a flu or a bad cold and is still coughing badly so they messaged us yesterday to say they cannot come. So it was 12 adults and 2 kids in total.
イギリスではこの時期はまだクリスマスの続きで、ツリーなどクリスマスの飾りはまだ飾っています。一応、１月６日ごろに撤収する慣わしです。
Unlike Japan, it still has a feel of Christmas in England and everyone is still having their Christmas trees and other Christmas decorations up. It is customary to put them away around the 6th January.
夕方の５時ごろから７時ごろまでというお誘いで Drinks & Nibbles （ドリンクとつまむもの）なので、お料理らしいお料理はせず、簡単なものばかり。実は、お隣のお友達がカクテルソーセージにソースを絡ませたものを持ってきてくださることになっていたのでわたしは暖かいものはソーセージロールにしようかしら、と思っていたのですがいらっしゃれなくなったので、急遽、わたしがカクテルソーセージにソースを絡ませたものを作ることにしました。この２つはイギリスの簡単な集まりで良く出されて人気なように思います。ベジタリアンやビーガンでなければソーセージやベーコンは人気が高く、今日も人気ですぐなくなりました。（写真、撮り忘れ。暖かいものをお出ししたかったので皆さんが揃ってから一呼吸おいてからオーブンに入れたので、すっかり忘れてしまいました。）
When we invited everybody we said it was going to be “Drinks & Nibbles, from about 5:00pm until 7:00pm” so I didn’t cook any proper meal. Our next door neighbour told us she would bring a plate of cocktail sausages, which I was also thinking of making but I changed to sausage rolls as she was bringing them, but she wasn’t able to join us so I also changed my plan back to serving cocktail sausages (with honey & mustard sauce). I think sausage is rolls and cocktail sausages are very popular in England at this sort of party and they were very popular today. I totally forgot to take a photo because I wanted to serve them warm and waited until everyone was here to put them in the oven – then I forgot to take a photo.
そして、インスタで見てずっと作ってみたいと思っていた、ツリーの形に並べたハムやサラミやチーズのボード。２人分だとツリーを作るほどには食べられないのでなかなか作る機会がありませんでした。ということで、今回トライしてみました。インスタで見かけたものほどには素敵になりませんでしたが、一応形にはなりました。
Another thing we served is this Christmas Tree shaped Ham, Salami & Cheese Board, I saw a photo on Instagram and have been wanting to give it a try. It’s not possible to make something like this just for 2 of us so this was a good opportunity for me to try it. It doesn’t look as pretty as the original photo I saw on Instagram
もう１品、簡単なものは、ベイクド・カマンベール。上にチリジャム、ドライフィグ、ピスタチオをのせてオーブンでチーズが溶けるまで焼いて、パンにつけていただきます。こちらも皆さんがいらしてから温めたので、写真は撮り忘れました。
I prepared one more thing – Baked Camembert Cheese with chilli jam, dry figs & pistachios. Bake it in the oven until melting and eat it with some bread.
他はポテトチップスやトルティーヤ、ディップ、市販のミンスパイ、など。
We also put out some bowls of crisps, tortilla, dips, store-bought mince pies etc.
お皿やフォークやナプキンは、ダイニングのサイドボードに用意しておきました。お皿もグラスもたくさんあったのを結構処分してしまったので、ばらばらです。
My husband set up plates, forks & napkins on the side board in the dining room. We have got rid of a lot of our glasses and plates so we had to use a few different kinds of plates and glasses to have enough for everybody.
皆さん、歩いて１分かからないので丁度５時ごろにいらっしゃり、最後の方が帰られたのが丁度７時でした。
Since everyone lives right here, almost everyone arrived together around 5:00pm and it was 7:00pm exactly when the last person left.
皆さんがいらっしゃってからソーセージを焼いてそれを持って歩いてみなさんに食べていただいたり、カマンベールを焼いたり、その合間に近くに立っていらした方とおしゃべりしたり、なんだかあっという間に２時間経ってしまいました。前日までは緊張していましたが、当日はすることが色々とあって緊張している暇もなく、そして、人数が多かったのでそれぞれにキッチン、ダイニング、リビングに適当に分かれて数人ずつでおしゃべりされて、しばらくするとメンバーが入れ替わって、と自然な感じでみなさんが楽しくおしゃべりしてくださっていたので、楽なパーティーでした。夏の間はみなさんがガーデニングなどで外におられることが多くて、時々立ち話をする機会があるのですが、冬になると家に籠ることになるのでしばらくお目にかかれていなかった方がほとんどでしたし、これまでちゃんとお話しする機会がなかった方ともお話し出来て良かったです。皆さんも楽しんでくださったのだと良いな、と思います。
With the baking of the sausages, baking the Camembert, serving them, talking to whoever happened to be near me, the two hours went really quickly. Although I was nervous until yesterday, there was lots to do today so I didn’t have time to feel anxious hi. I also found out that actually a party with a large number of people is in a way easier because they look after themselves. They moved around from the kitichen to the dining room, from the dining room to the living room, then to the kitchen again, mingling with different people from time to time. It seemed to have gone well. We do see each other now and again when we are doing gardening in the front garden during the summer and we chat together sometimes but during the winter we are all staying inside our houses so we don’t have a chance to meet each other, so it was nice to see those I hadn’t seen for quite a long time. There was one couple that I hadn’t had a chance to talk to properly, too, and it was good to finally talk to them. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves.
