Mediterranean Cruise Holiday / Day 8 / Pompeii & Pizza (Excursion)

As I wrote yesterday, we didn’t have time to go to Pompeii when we were here 30-some years ago so we joined a paid excursion “Pompeii & Pizza’. It takes too much time to upload all the photos so just some today and I’ll blog about Pompeii properly when we get home.

We were supposed to meet for the tour at 9:00am and we first met in the ship’s theatre where they then called the various groups one by one to disembark via the gangway – I guess, because there isn’t enough space for many buses to sit and wait inside the port in Naples. So by the time we left the port it was past 9:30. Unfortunately, it was a Sunday yesterday and was such beautiful weather, they said it was the first day with such warm weather (it was only about 20C, but very sunny so hot in the sun) so the road between Naples and Pompeii was very congested, even more so than usual. Once we got to Pompeii the passengers on our bus were divided into 2 groups and our group was taken by another guide, who was a great guide, great at telling you stories in an interesting way. Unfortunately, unlike our previous guides, he didn’t have anything tall in his hand to hold up to show where he was, and because it was so crowded, we were always a little worried about loosing him. He was also quite short, which didn’t help, so we lost him often and all we could do was to follow others in our group, hoping they were following him. He was very good and stopped often and made sure we were following, but it would have helped if he had something visible in his hand. His talk was always very interesting and I felt it is valuable to have a guide in a place like that. When we were younger, we disliked being on a group tour but you do understand a lot more and become more interested in the place when you hear a guide’s explanation.

We got inside the site around 10:50 and it was close to 13:00 when we got back on the bus, so the tour inside was about 2 hours or so, but moved slowly so we didn’t walk that much. At the end of the day, I walked a little more than 6,500 steps, on the day before yesterday it was 7,600 steps.
