今週火曜日は、夫のビッグ・バースデー。ということで、今、北デボン州にある Appledore という海沿いの街に昨日から1週間家を借りて、夫の弟夫婦、甥っ子家族、姪っ子と一緒に過ごすホリデー中です。わたしたちは昨日到着、甥っ子家族は今日到着、義弟夫婦と姪っ子は明日到着します。借りている家については、また別に書くことにしますが、金曜日はお祝いディナー第1弾に、Tottington Manor の「Terra Restaurant」に行って見ました。初めての場所でしたが、レビューでは素晴らしいお料理、素晴らしいサービスと書かれていたので少し前から気になっていたところ。車で40分くらいかかりました。
This coming Tuesday is my husband’s special birthday, so we are renting a house in Appledore in North Devon for a week from yesterday to celebrate it with his family. We arrived yesterday, our nephew, his wife and their little baby arrived today, his younger brother, his wife and their daughter are arriving tomorrow. I’ll write about the house we are renting on another post. So, to kick off the celebration week for his special birthday, before we left for Devon, I booked a restaurant “Terra Restaurant” in Tottington Manor Hotel because it had a lot of great reviews like ‘outstanding food’ and ‘great service’. I’d been wanting to try the place for a while. It took us about 40 minutes to get to the hotel.
到着した時のスタッフの対応は、とても良かったです。レストランは思っていたよりもカジュアルでした。
We received a very nice welcome from a member of staff, who took us to a table. The restaurant was more casual than I was expecting.
座ってから前菜が出て来るまで随分時間がかかり、「遅いよね。」と言い始めてしばらくして来ました。
It took quite a long time before the starters came, we were talking amongst ourselves that it seemed to be taking so long even though the restaurant wasn’t busy at all.
夫の前菜は、とうもろこしのパンナコッタ。普通に美味しかったようでした。量がすごく少なくてびっくりしましたが。
My husband’s starter was Sweetcorn Panna Cotta. He said it was tasty enough. I must say it was a very small portion.
わたしの前菜は、茄子、お味噌、キヌアのサラダ。ナスが揚げてあったのですが、カリカリする衣がすごく塩辛かったです。
My starter was Aubergine, Miso & Quinoa Salad. The aubergine was deep-fried and had some thin crunchy batter, which was extremely salty.
この後、また長い間待たされて、やっとメインが出てきました。この頃にはわたしたちが到着した時にすでにパティオに座っておられた数組の他に中の席にも何組か座っておられたのですが、誰も食べていないという状況でした。
Then the wait before the main was another long long one. There were a few tables by this time as well as a few tables that we saw outside on the pattio, but nobody was eating anything, which got us worried.
夫は、シーバス。普通、と言ってました。
My husband had Seabass, he said it was OK but nothing special.
わたしはポークと迷いましたが、ポークは臭かったり固かったりがほとんどなので、安全そうなマッシュルーム、ひよこ豆、ほうれん草のカレーにしました。
I was thinking of pork chop for the main but that can often be too gamy or too tough here so in the end I went for a safe option of mushroom, chick pea & spinach curry.
これって、どうやって食べれば良いのでしょうか。ご飯もカレーも器にいっぱい入っていたのでどちらかに移すことはできませんし、ナイフとフォークだったのでパラパラのバスマティ米をすくってカレーを乗せる、という技も出来ません。結局、お皿をくださいとお願いして食べました。まぁ、まぁ。
How are you supposed to eat this? Both the bowl of rice and the bowl of curry were quite full so I couldn’t combine them together. They gave me a knife and a fork to eat it with so it wasn’t really an option to scoop dry basmati rice then dip into the curry or the other way round (it could have been done with a spoon, although I prefer not to eat that way). So I asked for a plate and they gave me a small plate to move things onto. It tasted OK but not very exciting.
まだ物足りなかったのでデザートをオーダーするつもりで待っていたのですが、デザートメニューをなかなか持ってこない。スタッフの方にお願いしようとキョロキョロするも、なかなか誰もこちらを見ない。そのうち、この調子だとオーダーしてから出て来るまで長い時間待たないといけないかもしれないし、やめとこう、ということになり、やっと目が合ったスタッフにお勘定をお願いし、それを待っていたら、別のスタッフがデザートメニューを持ってきました、やれ、やれ。
We didn’t feel full so we were thinking of ordering a dessert to share but nobody came with a dessert menu for a long time. We tried to get the attention of one of the staff but couldn’t. After 10 or 15 minutes we decided not to have a dessert since we expected it to take forever to get the dessert after ordering. We finally got the attention of someone so asked for the bill. While we were waiting for the bill, another staff member came with a dessert menu. Oh dear.
お勘定が来るまでの間に、2つのテーブルにオリーブが運ばれていき、「今日はファンクションがあって、キッチンが遅れていてすみません。」とスタッフがおっしゃっていました。そういえば、入って来るときにドレスアップした方達が別のお部屋に入って行かれました。それならそれで、もっと早く事情説明をすれば良いのに。それにしても、ここはホテルなのでファンクションはしょっちゅうあると思うので、ファンクションと別にどれくらいのお客さんにサービス出来るかもわかっていそうなものです。
We saw two tables getting bowls of olives and a waiter saying they had a problem in the kitchen because of a function. We did see a group of dressed up people going into a separate room. They should have come and explained to us all before taking so long. Besides, this is a hotel with a function room, this must happen all the time.
お勘定はサービス料金は引かれていました、まぁ、そりゃそうでしょう。
They did deduct the service charge from the bill – which is what we expected.
ということで、お祝いディナーは残念なディナーになってしまいました（涙）。
So it was a slightly sad celebration dinner…
