I had lunch with a friend, who works most of the week and our mutual friend near the office of the friend who works.  We went to “Whole Earth”, which is a vegetarian Peranakan restaurant.

I’ve written a few times that I tried, I think, 3 Peranakan restaurants in Singapore but I didn’t like any of them.  I do remember enjoying Peranakan/Nyona food in Penang many many years ago, but that seemed more like spicy Chinese.  Peranakan food here in Singapore is quite different and I guess there is some seasonings that they use that I don’t like.  This time it was vegetarian so I thought I may find it more enjoyable.

I would not call it “a restaurant” actually, it was more like a canteen, not somewhere you enjoy being there, if you know what I mean.  They had Peranakan, Thai and Chinese food on their menu, all with about the same emphasis.

The freind who had been here before recommended a few dishes.  These are lotus root “meatballs”.  The lotus root is cut so finely that it didn’t have crispy texture that I expected, I guess it’s mixed with soy meat, it did have similar texture to chicken balls.  They were covered with some sweet and salty sauce and outside was crispy; enjoyable enough.

Olive brown rice.  Quite different from Thai olive rice, it’s stir-fried in oil.  It was enjoyable when it was warm but as it cooled down it got quite greasy.

We also ordered some stir-fried okra but when it came it was mostly green beans with some aubergine and stinky beans with just a few pieces of okra, very different from the photo on the menu.  Still this was the best dish, at least for me.  It was similar to Chinese stir-fry but a little different.  It was nicely spicy and I liked the flavour of chilli.

Now, this next dish is “Nyonya curry” – it was very strange to us.  First of all the texture was very strange and grainy.  Then the taste was again very unfamilier, I don’t know what sort of spices are used but there must be some spice that we aren’t used to and wasn’t pleasant to us.  Also the taste was sort of … nothing other than the strange spices.  It wasn’t hot spicy, it wasn’t sour, it wasn’t sweet…  None of us had much more than just one or two little mouthfulls.

So, out of the 4 Peranakan restaurants, I would say this was the best and I did enjoy the stir-fried vegetables but the rest of the dishes were just OK, and this curry was really not my type of food.  Perhaps I really don’t like Peranakan taste after all.  Having said that, as I say, it wasn’t just me, the other 2 freinds didn’t eat the curry either.

We had one drink each with the meal (soda water, coke, lemonade) and it was S$39 per person, so I wouldn’t call it inexpensive.  Considering the simple decor, I would say it’s on the expensive side.  However, it seemed really popular and very busy.  Is it because we just made a mistake of ordering the wrong things, or just different taste, or is it because it’s in Michelin?  It was interesting to try it, but I won’t rush back.
