今日はボクシング・デーと言って、英国ではお休みになっています。昔、クリスマス当時は働く使用人たちに翌日の２６日に箱に入れたクリスマスプレゼントを渡したことからそう呼ばれるようです。
It’s a Boxing Day today in England. Apparently it’s named so because it was a day servants received boxes of Christmas presents and had a day off after working on Christmas Day.
宿泊ホテルのイベントの11時からのウォーキングに参加する予定でしたが、持ってきていたわたしのウォーキングブーツのゴム底が劣化していてパックリ取れてしました。結構高価でまだ数回しか履いていないのに、悲しい。香港やシンガポールではこうして、靴底がパックリ取れる事件、良くあります。日本でも多分あると思いますが、気候柄、香港、シンガポールでは多いように思います。
We were going to participate in the event of a few hours’ walking organised by the hotel but the rubber soles of my walking boots that I brought had come off yesterday! I’m so sad about them, they are expensive ones and I’d worn them only a few times, but it wasn’t a total surprise, this isn’t uncommon in Hong Kong and Singapore. I think it does happen in Japan, too, but more common in Hong Kong and Singapore because of the weather.
とにかく、そんな訳で参加できず、買いたいものもあったので、エクセターに軽いランチに行きました。カフェ・ルージュというチェーン店で、クロックムッシュに炒めた玉ねぎを加えたもの。
Anyway, we couldn’t join the walk so we went to Exeter for a little lunch and to look for something we wanted to get. I had croque monsieur with caramelised onion at a chain restaurant Cafe Rouge.

朝からの雨がランチの頃には止んでいましたが、ランチの後また降り始め、とことどころ雲の切れ目がある状態だったので、虹が出ていました！半円形。
It was raining this morning but stopped around the lunch time, then started raining again. While we were driving back it was raining here and there but sunny in some area so we saw a rainbow.
ホテルに戻ってしばらくして、アフタヌーンティー。夕食に余り響かないよう、早めの時間に少しだけ。サンドイッチを1つ半と小さなスコーンを2つ。甘いものは、余り食べる気せず。サンドイッチは、味がなかった。スコーンは美味しかったです。
Quite soon after we got back to the hotel we had afternoon tea. Just a little – 1.5 sandwich and 2 small scones. I didn’t have any of the cake – too sweet. The sandwiches didn’t have much flavour but the scones were good.
アフタヌーンティーの後は、夕食までお部屋でゆっくり。夕食は別記事にします。
After the afternoon tea we rested in our room until dinner. I’ll write about the dinner in a separate post.
