今日は、イギリスに来て初めて映画を映画館で観て来ました。香港ではよく映画館で映画を観ましたがシンガポールに行ってからはほとんど行かなくなったので、１０年目くらいかも知れません。大抵のことがそうですが、習慣になっている時はよく行っていたのですが行かなくなると面倒になり、家のテレビで観る方が楽という感じになってしまいます。たまたま、昨日、お友達ご夫婦と映画の話題になり、すごく良かったから絶対行って、と言われて早速行って来たという次第です。
We went to see a film in a cinema for the first time since we moved to England. We used to go to cinemas often in Hong Kong but stopped going more or less in Singapore, so it must have been longer than 10 years since we’d been to one. Like most things, once we stopped going to a cinema often it became something of an effort and we started to feel it’s easier to watch films on TV at home. Last night, the film “Wicked Little Letters” came up in conversation and our friends said it was really good so we really should see it – so we went this afternoon. It really was very good and we enjoyed it very much.
観に行った映画は、「Wicked Little Letters (邪悪な短い手紙）」、オリヴィア・コールマンとジェシー・バックリーが主演で、舞台は我が家から車で１５分くらいのところにある Littlehampton という海辺の街ですが、我が家から更に近く１０分以内の Arundel （アランデル）で撮影が行われたので公開されたら是非観たいと思っていました。撮影されたアランデルにはよく行きますし、撮影されていた時期にはこのあたりはその話題で持ちきりでした。それがいつ頃だったかはっきり覚えていませんが、多分１年半くらい前のことではないかと思います。
Some scenes from Wicked Little Letters were filmed in Arundel, which is very near us, less than 10 minutes’ drive, and we’ve been looking forward to watching it because we’d seen the town looking different for the filming. We go to Arundel often so we felt we should see it. I don’t remember for sure but I think it was filmed about a year and a half ago.
ストーリーは、1920年代の英国の海岸の町リトルハンプトンでの実話に基づくストーリー。町中の人々に汚い言葉で書かれた中傷の手紙が届くようになり、その犯人を突き止めるお話しですが、登場する手紙も実際の手紙がほとんどだそうです。日本語で検索してみたところ、ほとんど引っかからないので、日本では公開されないのでしょうね。とても英国的なお話しなので、世界的にはあまり話題にならないのでしょうか。日本語には「汚い言葉」というのはそれほど存在しないので理解しにくいお話しかもしれませんが、英語には多くの汚い言葉が存在し、基本的にある程度の家庭の人、特に女性は少なくとも人前ではあまり汚い言葉は使わないのですが、手紙にはありとあらゆる汚い言葉で罵っていて、その犯人は意外な人だったという結末です。コメディーに仕立ててあるので、笑って観れる映画です。
The story is based on a true story that happend in Littlehampton (only 15 minutes from us) in the 1920s. Several people in town received letters with a lot of dirty/swearing words and some people get together to try to find out who did it. Apparently the most of the letters used in the film were the actual real letters. I searched for the film title in Japanese but there was only one article related to it that I could find, so maybe it won’t be in cinemas in Japan. I suppose it is a very English/British type of film and might not be received well outside the UK. In Japanese there aren’t many ‘swear words’, I can think of, only a few and they are very mild like ‘stupid’, no words for parts of the body etc are used for that purpose. The film was very funny and very enjoyable.
