アパートメントからゆっくり歩いて25分くらいのところにあるサンジョバンニというところまで歩いてみました。アパートメントがあるところは沢山アパートメントが並んでいる住宅地で、15分ほど歩くとお店やカフェやレストランを沢山見かける大きな通りにでます。その大きな通りを10分ほど歩くとアウレニアヌス城壁が見え、その側にサンジョバンニ大聖堂が見えます。
We went San Giovanni this afternoon. It’s around 25 minutes’ walk from the apartment we are renting walking slowly. Where the apartment is have one apartment block to the next with shops, ages, restaurants here and there but when you walk for about 15 minutes you get to a major road and it starts to feel more like a city with lots of cafes and restaurants. When you walk further 5 or 10 minutes along the major road you see the Aurelian Walls, then see the San Giovanni Cathedral.
サンジョバンニ・イン・ラテラノ大聖堂は、ローマで最も古い大聖堂でローマの4大バシリカの1つ。313年に時の権力者であるローマ皇帝がキリスト教を認めて以降、最も早くに建てられた教会だと言われています。
The Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano was consecrated in 324 AD, founded by Emperor Constantine. It is the official cathedral of Rome and holds the highest rank among the four papal basilicas.
中は想像より広くて、とても美しい教会でした。
When you go inside it was much larger than we imagined and very beautiful.
近くのカフェで冷たいものを飲んでから、帰りは地下鉄で帰りました。
After visiting the basilica we had a cold drink at a cafe nearby and took the metro to get back to the apartment.
