やってしまいました、プチ・ぎっくり腰（涙）。今朝、シャワールームの区切りの水をスクイージーでお掃除していてしゃがんだ時に、ギクッ！思わず座り込んで１０秒ほど動けず。
Oh, dear…. I pulled my lower back this morning when I was getting rid of the water from the wall of the shower area with a squeegee and had squatted down. The pain was so sharp that I sat on the floor immediately and couldn’t move for 10 seconds or so.
プチ・ぎっくり腰はこれまでに何度かありますが、これまでのところ幸いに翌日にはあまり意識しないほど良くなっているので今回もそうでありますように、と祈っていますが、今のところ、座っている位置から立ったときや歩くと多少痛みます。昨日、ほんの１５分ほどお庭仕事をしましたがまだまだ残っているので、今日続きをするつもりでしたが、無理です。とほほ。
This has happened a few times in my life but it has always been on the mild side and I was OK on the following day, so that’s what I am hoping for this time, too. So far, it’s a little painful to stand up from a chair or to walk. I did some gardening yesterday, but only for about 15 minutes, and I was going to do more, as the penstemons need cutting back, but there is no way I can do that today.
面白いのは、丁度プチ・ぎっくり腰をした時間辺りからしばらく、Oura Ring に「Restored」という状態であると出ました。Restored は回復状態というのでしょうか、リラックスしている、よりも更にリラックスしている状態のこと。昨日は夕方までずっと Stressed とEngagedの上の方をウロウロしていて、つまり結構ストレスがかかっている状態で夕方になってやっとリラックスしているというメッセージが出ました。昨日は、お友達がランチにいらしたのである程度緊張もありましたし、良い意味での刺激もあったからだと思いますが、夜になっても Restored にはならなかったのに、ぎっくり腰で Restored は笑えます。その後も、今日はほぼほぼ「リラックスしている」状態の中にいくつか Restored がある状態。要するにあまり動けてないからでしょうね、歩くのも恐々ですし。
The funny thing is that my Oura Ring tells me I was “restored” for a while after I pulled my back. Yesterday, from morning until later in the evening it said I was in the state of ‘stressed’ and ‘enaged’, I didn’t go to ‘relaxed’ until late in the evening and there was no ‘restored’ recorded. We had our friends over for lunch so I was a bit nervous and also I suppose I had good stress talking with them, so that was totally understandable. However, ‘restored’ when I’m in pain is quite funny. Even after that up to now, it shows that I’m in the state of ‘relaxed’ with a few bits of ‘restored’. I suppose that’s because I’m not able to move fast or even in a normal way, I’m being very slow even just to walk.
さて、今日はどんより曇ったお天気ですが、久しぶりにパブでサンデー・ローストをいただきました。我が家から車で１５分くらいのところ、ペットワースに行く途中にある「The Swan Inn」に行きました。このパブにはわたしたちがイギリスに引っ越して来てすぐの頃に何度か行ったのですが、そのうちクローズしてしまい（多分コロナ後だったと思います）、長い間空き家になっていました。去年、やっと買い手がついたようでリノベーションが始まり、屋根からやり直していたのでかなり大規模にリノベーションをしているのだなと思っていましたが、去年のクリスマス前にオープンしました。一度行ってみようねと言いながら、パブにしてもレストランにしてもオープンしてしばらくの間は予約が取りにくくてここもそうで、チェックした時には満席ということが続き、やっと今回早めにチェックして予約が取れました。
It’s a very grey and dull day today but we went out for a Sunday Roast – it’s been quite a while since we did that. We went to a pub “The Swan Inn” in Fittleworth, which is about 15 minutes from us, and is on the way to Petworth. When we moved to England five and a half years ago, we went to this pub a few times, but then quite soon after that (I think it was after Covid) it closed down and it had been empty for a long time. Then last year we saw it being renovated, including replacing the whole roof, and it finally re-opened just before Christmas under the new owner. We’ve been wanting to try the place but like many others everyone was wanting to try it and for a long time it was very hard to book a table. Whenever we tried it was fully booked. This time we tried well in advance and finally booked a table for today’s lunch.
中はいくつものお部屋に分かれていて、わたしたちの席はレセプションからすぐのお部屋だったので他のところは見れなかったのですが、内装は以前から随分変わってはいましたが、古めかしい雰囲気にリノベーションされていてパブらしい良い雰囲気でした。
Inside, it looked like there are a few ‘rooms’ but our table was in the room just off the reception so we didn’t have a chance to see any other areas, but it looked like it was very sympathetically renovated. It looked ‘old and pubby’ even though it was newly done.

２人とも、ローストビーフにしました。お野菜は、カリフラワー、スウィードのマッシュ、茹でたステムブロッコリー、赤キャベツ（甘酸っぱい味付けにしてオーブンで蒸し煮したもの）、ローストポテト。もちろん、ヨークシャープディングも。
We both had Roast Beef, the vegetables were cauliflower, mashed Swede, boiled stem brocooli, red cabbage (steam/roasted with vinegar and sugar), roast potato. And of course Yorkshire Pudding.
ビーフはピンクでおいしそう、と思ったのですが、結構ぱさついていてもそもそ。一般的なローストビーフよりかなり厚めのスライスで、それが好みの人もいると思いますがわたしは薄い方が好み、特にお肉がドライなので余計薄い方がいただきやすいと思います。そして、ほとんどグレービーがなかったので追加でお願いしましたが、お肉は多分塩胡椒されていない状態、グレービーもお塩がかなり控えめなので、結構お塩をしないと味がなかったですが、しっかりお塩をすればまぁまぁいただけました。ただ、お願いしたホースラディッシュはほとんどがクリームでホースラディッシュの味があまりしなくて、ここでぴりっとホースラディッシュが効いていればもっと美味しいのにね、と夫と言いつついただきました。お野菜類はどれも美味しかったです。ローストポテトはもう少し焼いた方が良い感じ。ヨークシャープディングはちょっと焼きすぎでドライになりすぎていました。まぁ、大きなパブで大勢のローストをするのは大変なのはわかります。
Beef looked very nice and pink but it was actually quite dry. The slices were quite thick, which I understand some people prefer but I prefer thin slices specially when the beef is dry. The problem was it wasn’t seasoned and there was hardly any gravy. We did ask for additional gravy, which made it better, but it wasn’t seasoned much either so we had to add quite a lot of salt to be able to taste anything. Once we seasoned it it tasted much better. Another problem was that the horseradish was mostly cream and it didn’t taste much of actual horseradish, it would have been much nicer with proper horseradish flavour. The vegetables were all very nice. Roast potatoes would have been nicer if they were roasted a little longer and the Yorkshire Pudding was baked a little too long and had gone too crispy and dry. Still we understand how hard it must be to cook a roast dinner for a large number of people and overall it was good enough.
デザートは、ブレッド＆バタープディングをシェアーしました。かなりの量だったので、２人でやっと食べ切る感じでした。ブレッド＆バタープディングは大好きなのですが、パブやカフェでオーダーすると大抵パサパサで美味しくないので迷いましたが、これはとても美味しかったです。カスタードもバニラビーンズ入りの美味しいカスタードでした。
Then we shared Bread’n Butter Pudding. It was a huge portion, we just managed to finish it. Although I love Bread’n Butter Pudding, I don’t often order it in pubs or cafes because they are almost always very dry, but this one was very nice and moist. Even the custard sauce was very nice with real vanilla beans, not the typical fake custard you often get in pubs.
ビール1．５パインととメイン２つとデザート１つで65ポンド（12,550円）。お安いと思いました。
We had 1.5 pints of beer, 2 mains, 1 dessert – and it was £65. I think that is very reasonable for England.
パブがある Fittleworth という村のことを「ウェストサセックスのコッツウォルド」などと書かれた記事を最近読んだので車でさっと走ってみましたが、「え〜〜〜、どこがコッツウォルド？普通ですけど〜。」という感想でした。Amberley という村の方がずっと素敵だと思います。
We’ve read an article that said something like “Fittleworth is the most beautiful village, like Cotswolds in West Sussex”. so we drove through the village but … The Cotswolds??? Where?? it’s just very ordinary to me… I think Amberley is much more pretty.
