明けましておめでとうございます。新しい年になりましたね。２０２３年がみなさまにとって笑顔に溢れた１年になりますように。日本は良いお天気のようで何よりです。新年が良いお天気で始まると気持ち良いですよね。一方、こちらは曇り時々雨、といういつものイギリスの冬らしいお天気です。
Happy New Year! I hope that 2023 will be filled with smiles & laughter for you all. It looks like the weather is very nice and sunny in Japan, it’s lovely to have a sunny New Year’s day. It’s quite grey here in England but that is normal here in winter.
昨日から泊まっていた義弟夫婦とアランデルでランチをしました。
We had lunch in Arundel with my husband’s younger brother and his wife, who stayed last night with us.
アランデルは何度もブログに登場していますが、うちから車で５分程度のところにある小さな街で、お城もあるので一応観光地と言って良いと思います。イギリスらしい街並みが素敵な、小さな街です。
I’ve written about Arundel many times here, but it’s a lovely little town near where we live, only 5 minutes or so by car. As it has a castle I guess we can call it a touristy place but it is a very charming little town with a lot of old buildings.
こちらでは郵便局などもこういう古い建物に入っていて、良い感じです。
Even the post office is in an attractive looking old building.
ランチは、アランデルの「The Swan Hotel」というパブに行ってみました。ここは何度かわたしは刺繍のグループの集まりで入ったことがあり、お隣のお友達とランチをしたこともあります。ランチと言ってもサンドイッチしか食べたことがないのですが、サンドイッチはフレッシュで美味しいので他のものも美味しいのではないかと思い、今日のランチに行ってみました。クリスマスの翌日から今日までは、イギリスではお散歩をしたりパブでランチを食べたりする人が一番多い時期なような気がします。今日のパブも大勢の方達で賑わっていました。
So we went to a pub, “The Swan Hotel” in Arundel for our lunch. I’ve been to this pub a few times for the embroidery group gathering and lunch with my next door neighbour, but I’d only had sandwiches there. As their sandwiches are always fresh, I expected the other items on the menu would be good. I think from Boxing Day until today might be the period you see people going out for walks or having lunch in pubs and the Swan Hotel was very busy.
昨日の夜たくさん食べたのでサンドイッチのつもりだったのですが、日曜日はサンドイッチはないとのこと。あまりお腹が空いていなくてそんな気分じゃないんだけどと言いつつ、結局、ポークのローストにしました。
As we had a big dinner last night, I was going to have some sort of a sandwich but they told us they don’t serve sandwiches on Sundays. I really didn’t feel up to eating a big lunch but in the end I did order Roast Pork.
夫は、ビーフパイ。美味しかったそうです。
My husband had a beef pie, which he enjoyed very much.
わたしと義弟は、ローストポーク。巨大なヨークシャープディング付きです。
My brother-in-law and I had the Roast Pork, which came with a huge Yorkshire pudding.
付け合わせはローストポテト、ローストパースニップ、ロースト人参、そして別添えでカリフラワーチーズと茹でキャベツも来ました。ポークもすごく分厚くスライスされていました。ただ、残念ながらポークはわたしには臭みが強くて食べられなかったのですが、お野菜とヨークシャープディングは美味しくいただき、お腹いっぱいになりました。
It also came with roast potatoes, roast parsnips, roast carrots and also cauliflower cheese & boiled cabbage in separate bowls. The pork was a very thick slice, too. Unfortunately, the pork was too gamey for me but I enjoyed all the vegetables and the Yorkshire pudding, which filled me up.
義弟の奥さんは、ターキーのロースト。付け合わせはローストポーク、ロースtパースニップ、ローストキャロット、ソーセージのベーコン巻き。
My brother-in-law’s wife had Roast Turkey with all the trimmings.
みんなお腹いっぱいになったので、少しお散歩することに。お城の堀に沿って１５分ほど歩いて戻りました。
We had a little walk along the castle moat for about 15 minutes, then back.
風が吹くと顔は寒いですがそれほど気温は低くないので、歩くのには悪くない気候でした。
My face felt cold when the wind blew but the temperature wasn’t very low so it was quite good weather for a walk.
家に戻って、お茶やコーヒーを飲みながら少しおしゃべりして、２人はウィンザーの家に戻りました。今日は祝日でもあり日曜日でもありでアランデルのお店はクローズしていたので、開いているときにアンティークのお店などを覗いてみたいと言っていたので、次回はゆっくりと街歩きも出来ればと思いますし、お散歩も道が泥濘んでいないときにもっと遠くまで歩いてみたいと思います。
After we got back, we had tea/coffee and chatted for a little while before they left for Windsor. As it is a public holiday as well as Sunday, the shops in Arundel were all closed, hopefully we’ll spend more time in Arundel together going in the antique shops etc next time. We can also walk much longer in Arundel along the river or in the fields when the ground isn’t so wet.
