今日は、ボーダーズからヨークへの移動日でした。ダイレクトに走れば3時間半くらいの距離だったのですが、途中ホーリー・アイランド（聖なる島）に寄ることにしたので5時間程かかりました。ホーリー・アイランドは潮が引いている間は車で行けるのですが満ちると通れなくなり、島になるというところで、カソリック教の方にとっては重要な場所だそうです。夫もわたしも無宗教ですが、夫の弟夫婦にホーリー・アイランドで売っていたコーヒー豆をいただいたことがあったので行ってみようということになったのですが、行ってみると潮が満ちる時間に近くなっていて渡れず、こちら側にレストランやカフェやお店などがあるのではと想像していたのですがカフェは1軒しかなく、ホーリー・アイランドは結構遠くの方に小さく見えただけ。完全に事前の下調べ不足でした。カフェで軽いランチだけして、ヨークの宿泊ホテルに向かいました。 Today, we drove from Borders to York. 今日宿泊するホテルは、ボーダーズにある「Windlestraw」というホテル。夫がインバネスと次の宿泊場所のヨークとの大体中間辺りにあるということで選んだホテルですが、夫のイメージとは違っていました。いつもわたしたちが宿泊するホテルは（場所にも状況にもよりますが）できるだけ部屋数は多くないけれど、建物はある程度大きなところを選びます。ベッドルームに籠らずにホテルのラウンジなどでゆっくりしたい、というのと、レストランもある程度のレベルでサービス面でもプロフェッショナルなところが好みなのです。ですが、今回のホテルは、来てみると思っていたより規模が小さく、ご夫婦で経営されているゲストハウスという感じのホテルでした。 The hotel we are staying in Borders tonight, “Windlestraw”, is what my husband chose because it’s about in the middle between Inverness and York (where we are staying tomorrow) but it’s not the type of a hotel he thought.
