我が家から車で５分くらいのところに「Denman Gardens」というお庭があります。お庭の設計をしていただいたガーデニングデザイナーさんがボランディアに行っているとお聞きし、すぐ近くだし行ってみようと言いつつ数年経ってしまいましたが、今日、以前お隣のお隣にお住まいだった方とお隣と３人でお茶（お２人はコーヒー、意外なことにイギリスではお友達と集まる時はお茶よりコーヒーを飲まれる方がほとんどのような気がします）をすることになり、お友達が提案されたのがこのお庭のカフェだったので、初めて行ってきました。カフェでは写真を撮らなかったのでお庭のお写真をサイトからお借りしました。多分、２週間くらい経てばこんな様子になるのだと思います。
There is a place called “Denman Gardens” very near us, only 5 minutes by car. We’ve heard of the place from our garden designer, who used to do some volunteer work there, and we’ve been meaning to pop in but somehow we keep forgetting it and haven’t been there. I just came back from there having had tea (my friends had coffee) with friends (one is our next door neighbour, the other used to live next door but one), I feel that the majority of people in England prefer to have coffee when out with their friends rather than tea – which was a bit of a surprise. I didn’t take any photo at the cafe so I’m uploading a photo from their website. I guess this is how it’ll be looking in a couple of weeks.
残念ながら今日は午後から結構雨が降っていたので、お庭には入らず（入場料がかかります）、カフェでお茶だけしてきました。イギリスではお友達と会う時にナショナルトラストやこういうガーデンに行ってぶらぶら歩いてからお茶をすることが多いのですが、事前に予定を立てるとお天気はわからないので、雨が多い時期にはよほど運が良くなければ雨に降られることになってしまい残念です。
Sadly, it started to rain in the afternoon and it was too miserable to walk in the garden specially because they charge entrance fee, so we just had tea/coffee at their cafe. In England, when you make a plan to get together with friends, we would often meet them in a National Trust place or gardens like these, but as you need to make a plan well enough in advance, you have to be very lucky to get nice weather on the day itself as it tends to rain so often like it has been doing for what seems to be a long time now.
お庭が見られなかったのは残念ですが、お２人とのキャッチアップは楽しく、あっという間に時間が経ってしまいました。お庭は、また夫と一緒に旅行から戻ったら行ってみたいと思います。
It was disappointing that we weren’t able to walk in the gardens but it was lovely to catch up with my friends and the time flew. I would love to go back and walk in the gardens with my husband after we get back from our holiday.
