シチリア５日目、シラクーサ２日目は、Caltagirone と Piazza Amerina の近くにあるVilla Romana Del Casale　に行くことに。シラクーサの近郊にはたくさんの魅力的な街があるのですが、その中でも是非行きたいと思っていたのが陶器の街の Caltagirone でした。シラクーサからCaltagirone までは車で２時間ほど、そこから Villa Romana Del Casale まで更に１時間。駐車場から観光スポットまでは１５分から２０分ほど歩くことが多いですし、駐車場を探したり観光の時間も入れると結構時間がかかります。朝１０時頃に出てヴィラに戻ったのはもう夕方で、結構ハードでした。この日もとても暑かったので、暑いと聞いていたVilla Romana Del Casaleには遅めの午後に着くように行きました。

On our 5th day in Sicily, (the 2nd day of our stay in Syracuse), we visited Caltagirone and Villa Romana Del Casale near Piazza Amerina.  There are many beautiful towns near Syracuse but Caltagirone was one of the places I really wanted to visit.  It takes about 2 hours by car, then Villa Romana Del Casale is another hour away.  It almost always takes at least 15-20 minutes walk from a parking spot to where you want to see, and it often takes a while to find somewhere to park, so it was quite a long day.  I think we left around 10.00am and got back to our villa in the evening.  It was another very hot day so we wanted to go to Villa Romana Del Casale later in the afternoon rather than than earlier because I was told it’s hot there.

カルタジローネの街が見えてきました。イタリアの街はどこも山の上にあって下から見ると美しいですが、道は狭くて急な坂道なのでたどり着くのが大変です。あそこまで登るの？と不安になるわたしたち。でも、下の方で停めるとすごい坂道を長時間歩かなくてはいけないので、できるだけ上の方の駐車場に停めたい。

Here is Caltagirone ahead of you. So many towns in Italy are on top of a mountain like this and look beautiful, but are such a pain to get to!  We thought “Oh my God, do we have to drive up there?”.  I think my husband wanted to park somewhere on the bottom of the town but I didn’t want to walk for an hour…

 

 

思った通りの細いクネクネした坂道で、どきどき、ひやひやしました。

As we were fearing, the streets are very narrow, wiggly and steep.  So scary to drive in these streets, very stressful.

 

 

 

 

やっと駐車場を見つけて車を停めて、ここから坂道を上ります。

Finally found a parking.  Now we need to climb up.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

写真がうまく撮れなかったのですが、これがカルタジローネで有名な陶器が飾られた長い階段 The Scala。階段の上には大聖堂があります。写真では曇っているように見えますが、この日も日差しがきつく暑かったので一度は階段で休み、途中２つほどお店を覗きながら上まで上りました。この日はこの階段を含めて８０００歩近く歩き、上り下りした階段は２７セット（やく６階段が１セット）と記録にあります。

I wasn’t able to capture the real beauty of this place but these long stairs were very impressive.  At the top of the stairs, there is a cathedral.  As I say it was a very hot day, although it doesn’t look so on the photos, so we had to pop in a shop or sit on a step a couple of times before we reached the top. From my iPhone’s record, I walked 8,000 steps, and climbed the equivalent to 27 flights of stairs this day.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

階段の両側には普通の住まいもあるようでしたが、何件か陶器のお店もあり、中では絵付けをされていました。わたしたちも小さめのお皿を２枚だけ購入。もっと大きなお皿がほしかったのですが、重くて。。。

There seem to be some flats as well but there were a few ceramic shops and restaurants on the sides of these steps.  After lunch, we bought 2 small plates.  We would have wanted to get larger plates but they were so heavy, we had to be satisfied with just the smaller ones.

 

ランチは、どこで食べたのだったか。。。イタリアは、シンプルなパニーニがどこで食べても大抵とても美味しい。ちょっと歩いて探した気がします。

I cannot remember where we had lunch, I have a feeling we looked for a cafe for a little while.  Panini in Italy is almost always delicious.  Very simple but tastes so good.
