カルタジローネで遅めの軽いランチを済ませ、車まで戻ってピアッツァ・アルメリーナ Piazza Armerina 郊外のカザーレの森の中にある Villa Romana del Casale (カサーレ荘）に向かいました。少し涼しくなる４時頃に到着するよう行ったのですが、まだまだ結構暑かったです。

After late light lunch in Caltagrone, we walked to our car and drove to Villa Romana del Casale near Piazza Armerina.  We timed it so we would arrive around 4.00pm, hoping it would have been cool by then but it was still quite hot.

シラクーサの周りはグリーンでいっぱいで、オレンジやレモンやオリーブの木の他にサボテンもたくさん見かけました。どこにもありましたが、ときどきサボテン畑もあったので、何かに使うのでしょうね。

 

 

Around Syracuse, it was very mountainous and green and we saw a lot of fruit trees like oranges, lemons, olvies, almonds, etc, but also lots of cacti, too.  Not only in nature but also quite a few farmed cacti fields so I guess they use them for something.

Villa Romana del Casale は３〜４世紀頃の皇帝級の人物（はっきりしたことはわかったいないようです）が営んだ別荘あとで、イタリアの４９箇所のユネスコの世界遺産の１つに指定されていて、豪華な床のモザイクで有名でその質の高さと規模は古代ローマ時代最大と言われているそうですが、存在が世に知られるようになったのは1950年代のことなのだそう。

Villa Romana del Casale used to be a villa of some emperor or someone of the same sort of class in 3-4 century and has been designated as one of 49 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Italy.  It is said that it contains the richest, largest and most complex collection of Roman mosaics in the world.  It was only around 1950 when the villa started to get to known.

入ってすぐが浴場、中庭にはプール（巨大な噴水か？）まであり、体育場、温浴室、サウナみたいなエステ施設も。モザイクで描かれた絵はさまざまで、狩りの様子、動物、ビキニの女性達まで。驚くほど広く、わたしたちが行ったときは一部少し並ばなくてはいけませんでしたがそれほど混んでいない状態で、全部見て回るのに１時間ほどはかかりました。混んでいるときは並ばなくてはいけないので、３時間ほどかかると何かの情報で読みました。今の時期は湿気がないので天井があって風が通るところは比較的涼しかったのですが、直射日光を浴びるところではとても暑かったです。

First thing you see is a bath,  There is a pool (or a huge fountain?), gymnastic room, something like sauna etc.  There are many different mosaic pictures – hunting, animals, bikini girls.  It is huge.  It took us about an hour to see everywhere relatively quickly, we had to queue only at one or two places for a few minutes but I have read that when it is busy it can take 3 hours because you would be queueing up.  Although it was relatively cool when we were inside where it was covered but the breeze can go through, it was extremely hot outside.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

考古学に興味のある方ならすごく興味深いところだと思いますが、わたしのようにほとんど興味がなくても２０００年前にこんなモザイクが存在したと思うと妙に感激します。

ここを出たのが多分５時頃、シラクーサで借りていたヴィラまで車で２時間程度だったと思います。車に乗っていた時間も結構長かったですし、暑い中長時間歩いてかなり疲れたのを覚えています。この日もまだオーナーさん達が用意してくださっていたピザなどが残っていたので、夕食はピザとワインでした。

If you are interested in archaeology, this place must be so interesting, but even when you aren’t like me, realising that such mosaics existed 2,000 years ago is amazing.

I guess it was around 5.00pm when we left this place and it took us about 2 hours or so to get back to the villa we were renting in Syracuse.  I remember we felt quite tired after long drives and walking in the heat.  We still had some pizza that the owners of the villa gave us so we had what was left.
