Lovely Lunch At A Friend’s In Tokyo

Two friends in Tokyo invited me for lunch at their homes.  I was more than happy just to be able to see my friends, but being invited to their homes and enjoying each other’s company and having delicious food is very special.  I told them that I cannot eat as much as I used to and I probably cannot eat even my usual amount since I would be out for lunch, dinner, lunch, dinner every day.  I tried to tell them that I didn’t want them to go out of their way as I know both of them have very busy lives.  Of course they went out of their way, but they did serve everything in the style we can get however much we want rather than serving each portion.  I ended up eating too much, though, as everything was really deliciious and moreish.

One of them is a friend from Hong Kong days.  I think she is about 12 years younger than me, we met at a cooking class run by our mutual friend at her restaurant.  This friend was taking so many cooking and baking classes, I learned a lot from her.  She also uses beautiful tableware and has lovely things in her place, I remember buying a couple of things that she had because I liked them so much.  I don’t have many friends who invite me over to their places, so it was always a great treat for me to be invited by her.

The wood plank nuts and things are on is the same as what we have – didn’t realise it until I saw this photo.

One of the starter was Fritatta – thinner than what I know of as Fritatta and no potato inside, just sauteed onion.  Very moreish.

The other starter was Radicchio Salad.  It has sultana, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese…  To be honest, I don’t like bitter taste and I don’t like this Radicchio for this reason.  It doesn’t bother me if there is some of this in a salad but I would never order “a radicchio salad” in a restaurant if it’s on the menu.  However, this was not bitter.  It looks unusual, not a salad I’ve seen or had before.  (I forgot to mention there was some chicken in the salad as well.)

Then the main was oricciette with meatball sauce Napolitan style.  Meatballs are like rugby ball shape rather than round and they also have sultana and pine nuts so I thought they were Sicilian style as it seems to be influenced by Middle-East.  Meatballs were very tender and tasty, the tomato sauce was light.  The pot is beautiful and the bowls and dishes are also so nice.

We had some sweet things after this, chatted a lot and had a really lovely afternoon together.  I was there until her daughter came home so I had a chance to chat with her too.  She named the little stuffed rabbit that I gave to her when she was a baby with my name and still cuddles her!  So sweet!

When I was in Hong Kong, we used to exchange recipes at potluck parties, cooked together, taken cooking classes together, we had a lot of fun together.  My husband was away on business much more than now and I used to spend many evenings with many friends at home drinking and eating.  We remembered those days together.

Sounds like a nice get-together, talking about old memories. So sweet that her daughter named the plushie you got her after you. ♡

I think it’s my friend who named the rabbit my name as her daughter was still a baby.
