チチェスター近くのお友達のお宅から電車を乗り継いで、5時間かけてエクセターまで来ています。エクセターは30年年以上前に英語留学のためホストファミリーにお世話になった懐かしい場所。
From near Chichester, where I’m staying with friends, I changed train twice and took 5 hours to get to Exeter – the place where I stayed nearly 40 years ago to learn English, staying with a host family.
今日はお世話になっているお友達がお出かけだったので事前にタクシーを予約していました。お家から駅まで１０分くらい、電車は朝１０時２９分。電車の時間もお伝えして念のために１０時ピックアップにしましょうと係りの方がおっしゃったのでそうしました。なのに、１０時過ぎてもタクシーは来ない。８分まで待って電話をしたら向かっているとのこと。やっと来たのは１５分、それもゆるゆる。「29分の電車なんですが、間に合いますか？」というと「何時の電車か聞いてませんし、さぁ、ベストを尽くすけど。」「。。。。。。」「１０時にピックアップの予約なんですけど？」「知らないよ、わたしは今呼ばれてすぐに来たからね、わたしのせいじゃない。」運転手さんのせいかどうかは知りませんが連帯責任ですよ、と言いたかったけれど、そんなことはここでは通じないのを知っているので飲み込みました。間に合わせてもらわないと困りますし。
As my friends were out today and couldn’t drop me off we booked a taxi to the train station for me in advance. We told the taxi company that my train was at 10.29 and she told us the cab will pick me up at 10.00 to be on the safe side. (It’s about 10 minutes to the station). I waited until 10.08 but no taxi came so I called the company, she told me it was on its way. It finally arrived at 10.15, very leisurely! I said, “My train is at 10.29, I hope we won’t be late.” He says “I didn’t know what time your train is, did I? I’ll do my best.” So then I said “We told your company what time the train is.” He says ” I don’t know, they called me just now so I came, it’s not my fault.” So I said “So your company didn’t book you in advance?” He says “No, they just called me, so it isn’t my fault.”
We’ll, in my culture, we apologize on behalf of the company, it is the fault of the company that includes him! However I know that is not the case in England so I swallowed my words. I needed him to ‘do his best’.
幸いギリギリ間に合いましたが、電車に乗ったのは出発2分前でした。信号に引っかかっていたら間に合わないところです。チケットも買ってあったのでよかったですが、なければ間に合わないところです。2度乗り換えるので、1つつまづくとずっとつまづく訳で、本数も少ないので単純に日本のように次の列車に乗れば良いというものでもないので(全く別のルートの方が早かったりするのです)とっても困るところでした。やれやれ、疲れました。
Fortunately, I made it with just 2 minutes to spare. If we had had a red traffic light we would not have made it. If I hadn’t bought the tickets online I would not have made it. It would have been awful if I’d missed the first train as it meant I would have missed all the other trains, too, and it wouldn’t have been easy to figure out what to do, and trains are not very frequent here. It was so stressful!! So glad I made it.
幸い、そのあとは乗り換えも上手くいき、イギリスらしい景色を見ながら無事エクセターに到着。(ただ、レディングからエクセターへの電車の車内販売でお湯を沸かす機能が故障していて紅茶がないとのことで、皆さん、「ここからコーンウォールまでお茶が飲めないの？」嘆いておられました。イギリスの車内販売で紅茶が買えないなんて、大ごとです。笑)
The rest of the journey was uneventful except that there was no tea on the train from Reading because apparently the hot water system didn’t work, and many people were in distress saying “No tea until all the way to Cornwall??!” A disaster when you cannot have tea on a train in England!
いつもは夫と車で来てお気に入りのホテルに泊まっていますが、今回は1人なのでCity Gate という小さなホテルに宿泊しています。パブと一緒になっています。シティーセンターからもホストファミリーからも近くて便利。
Normally I come to Exeter with my husband and stay in our favourite hotel outside the town, but this time it’s just me so I’m staying in a little hotel that belongs to a pub. It’s in a very convenient location, very close to the City Centre and also to my host family.
少しだけエクセターの街を歩きましたが、26度と結構暑く、お買い物には適さないお天気ですし、荷物を増やしたくないのでさらっとみて戻ってきました。クーラーも付いていますが、お部屋の中は案外涼しいです。
今日は、留学した時の最初のクラスの先生と近くのレストランでディナーをご一緒します。先生ともずっとお付き合いが続いているので、30年以上のお付き合いです。
I’m having dinner with a friend, who was my teacher in my first class in Exeter, near the hotel tonight. We’ve been keeping in touch so we’ve known each other for longer than 30 years.
