月曜日に予定通りのフライトでローマ空港に飛び、空港のヒルトンホテルに１泊しました。フライトは夕方６時ごろに着いてアパートメントまでは３０分くらいだったので何事もなければその日に借りているアパートメントに向かって問題ないとは思ったのですが、ごく最近ヨーロッパに入るには ETIAS 申請が必要というシステムが導入され、わたしたちはそのシステムが導入されてから初めてヨーロッパに来たので空港でその手続きが必要でした。フライトが遅れる可能性もありますし、その手続きでいろいろトラブルがあることも聞いていたこともあり１ヶ月お借りしているアパートメントの鍵を頂いたりする時間が読めなかったので、空港に１泊して翌朝向かう方がストレスがないと思ったのでした。ETIASの手続きは結局上手くいかず（夫もわたしも機械が指紋を読んでくれませんでした）、以前からある手動のスタンプを押していただいて入ることになったので、また次回、同じことをすることになります。周りを見ているととても多くの方達が同じ状況でした。機械に問題があるのでは、と思います。

We flew to Rome on Monday as planned and stayed at the Hilton at Roma Airport that night.  The flight was arriving around 6:00pm and the car ride from the airport to the apartment we are renting is only about 30 minutes so it wasn’t completely necessary to stay at the airport but it’s always possible that the flight gets delayed and also this is our first time to be in Europe since ETIAS started and we’ve heard that some people have a lot of trouble with this at the airport.  We get very stressed if we are making someone wait for us and we didn’t want our friend to be waiting until late, so we decided to stay at the airport for one night.  We were not able to proceed with ETIAS, incidentally, because our finger prints were not read properly and after several tries we had to go through the manual immigration system after all.  It looked like many people were having the same problem as us, I guess the machines are not sensitive enough.

ということで、翌朝アパートメントに着きました。１７年くらい前にウンブリアのお料理教室に参加したときにお料理を教えてくださった方とずっと交流が続いていて、仲良くしていただいているのですが、そのご夫婦が所有されているアパートメントを貸し出しておられるということで、日曜日から１ヶ月お借りしています。ローマは正直決して好きな街ということではないのですが、この時期はまだイギリスはお天気が悪くて寒いので気分転換に来た、という感じです。例えばロンドンに泊まることを思うと３日分くらいの料金で１ヶ月お借りできるのでとてもリーズナブルなので、お友達とも過ごせますし、お天気もイギリスより良い確率が高いですし（実は、昨日、今日ととても寒い）、時々観光をしたり小旅行にでたり美味しいものを食べたりしながら「ローマに住む」感覚を楽しみたいと思っています。

So we arrived at the apartment in Rome on the following day.  It belongs to our friend, who taught us a cooking class in Umbria about 17 years ago.  Since that cooking class we kept in touch with her and her husband and have become good friends.  The last time when we were here in Rome in October, we heard that they were letting the apartment, where they had lived for a year or two, for short terms and we decided to rent it for a month.  To be honest Rome isn’t my favourite city but the weather in England this time of year isn’t in general great so we thought it’d be nice to have better weather and have a change of scene.  We can see our friends, enjoy better weather (it’s been pretty cold yesterday and today, though), do a little sightseeing, have a short trip or two, enjoy some Italian meals and enjoy “living in Rome”.
