昨日の夕食は、大昔に英語留学した時の最初のクラスの先生だった方と、宿泊していたホテルのすぐ近くの The Conservatory というレストランでご一緒しました。外からの写真を撮っていなかったので、明日忘れなければ撮って追加します。

I had dinner with a friend, who was the teacher of my first class when I stayed in Exeter all those years ago, at a restaurant ‘The Conservatory’ very near my hotel.

最初にオリーブとフォカッチャが出てきました。オリーブは塩辛過ぎず美味しかったですし、フォカッチャはふんわり、もっちりした食感でとても美味しかったです。

First, they served us some olives and focaccia. The olives were nice as they weren’t too salty and the focaccia was very nice – fluffy and chewy at the same time.

前菜は、お友達はゴートチーズと玉ねぎのタルトレット、わたしはトマトとモッツァレラのサラダ。普通に美味しかったです。

For starter, my friend had Goat Cheese and Onion Tartlet and I had Tomato and Mozzarella salad. The salad was very simple but good.

メインは2人もチキン・スープリーム。チキンは皮はカリッと美味しかったですが、焼き過ぎて身はパサついていましたし、ソースがわたしには脂っこかったです。添えられていたポテトは美味しかったですし、お野菜たっぷりなのは嬉しかったです。

For the main we both had Chicken Supreme. The chicken was over-cooked, tough and dry, and the sauce was too buttery for me although the chicken skin was nice and crispy. The potato dish on the side was good and there was plenty of vegetables, which is good.

デザートは、お友達はベイクウェルタルトとアイスクリーム、わたしは塩キャラメルタルト(シャンテルクリームはなしにしていただきました)。すごく甘いかもと思っていましたがそうでもなく、ほろ苦くて美味しかったです。

For the dessert my friend had Bakewell Tart with Ice Cream and I had Salted Caramel Tart (it would have come with Chantelle Cream but I asked them not to). I thought the tart might be very sweet but it wasn’t, it was bitter-sweet and very nice.

チキンはイマイチでしたが他は美味しくいただきました。無理に複雑なものを作ろうとせずシンプルなお料理で、お値段もとてもリーズナブル、サービスも悪くなく気持ちよく食事が出来ました。

The chicken wasn’t great but the rest was good. All very simple, they didn’t try to cook anything complicated, it was reasonably priced and service was good, too.

ただ、メニューは、ベジタリアンには向かないメニューで、ベジタリアンだったら前菜のチョイスは上記の2つ、メインはトマトとゴートチーズのタルトだったので、どちらの前菜を選んでも重なってしまいます。お肉とお魚はそこそこありました。

The only thing is that if you are vegetarian you will have a problem as the menu is too limited. The choices for starters were just those 2 we had and the main was Tomato and Goat Cheese Tart. Whichever the starter you choose, you have to have something very simple for the main.
