イギリスに戻って来た前日は、ホテルのシャトルボートでサンマルコ広場に出て、レアルト橋の近くで軽くランチをしてから、ベネチアングラスで有名なムラノに行きました。ランチは、中に座るところがあって軽くサンドイッチが食べられるところを見つけて入ったのですが、観光客向けのお店だったらしく、あまり美味しいとは言えないパンでした。これなら１５ユーロでもホテルのカフェで食べれば良かった、と思ってしまいましたが、それでも中身の生ハムはイギリスで買える生ハムに比べて柔らかくて美味しいのでまずいというわけではなかったです。でも、どうせ食べるなら美味しい！と思えるものを食べたいですよね。１食損した気がしました。
On the day before we left Venice for home, we took a hotel shuttle boat to San Marco Square, walked to Rialto Bridge, had a quick lunch in a deli (where you can get sandwiches etc) that had some tables inside. I suppose it was a touristy place because the bread wasn’t very good, I wished we’d had sandwiches at the hotel like on the day before, even though it would have cost us 15 Euro for one sandwich. Still, the cured ham inside was excellent, much nicer than any cured ham you can buy in England, very tender, melting in your mouth, so it was enjoyable enough, I just wished the bread was better. I feel quite sad when I eat something not what it should be, feeling as if I wasted one meal that I could have had.
ムラノ島には昔２、３度行ったことがあります。多分、夫と初めて行ったのはわたしにとっては２度目でしたが、その時に工場を見学して結構たくさんのワイングラスを数種類日本に送っていただきました。震災で結構割れましたが、その後、もう１度行ったときに同じ工場に行って買い足したのですが、もう今はどの工場だったのか忘れてしまいました。そのワイングラス類は透明なグラスにゴールドの模様を入れたものでしばらくよく使っていたのですが、そのうち、もっとシンプルなものが好きになり使わなくなってしまったので、シンガポールから引っ越してくる時に処分してしまいました。色々と思い出があって手放したくなくても、置いておくスペースがなくなってしまって処分したものがたくさんあります。
We’ve been to Murano before, I think twice with my husband and another time with a friend before that. When we went there together for the first time, we visited a Murano glass workshop, bought quite a lot of glasses (clear but with gold engravings) and had them sent to Japan. Quite a few broke in the major earthquake we had in Japan after that, but we visited the same workshop again since and bought more to replace what we’d lost. We used to use them at home very often then, but our taste changed sometime later and we’ve been using simple clear glasses ever since. We gave them away before we left Singapore because we knew we wouldn’t have enough space to keep them. It’s sad that we had to let go of many things that were related to our lovely memories, but that couldn’t be helped as we only had limited space.
今回は、ベニスは初日に結構歩いて楽しみましたし（ベニスは小道を特に目的なく歩くのが楽しい）、観光めいたことは昔してしまって今はあまり興味がないですし、じゃあ、ムラノ島にでも行こうか、という感じで行ったのですが、せっかくなのでもし気に入ったグラスが見つかったら旅行の記念に買おうと思って見ていました。最近はそこでしか買えないものというのが少なくなっていて、下手すると住んでるところで同じものを見かけたりするので、海外でそれほどお買い物をしなくなった気がしますが、そして、毎日使うお水を入れるグラスがいいかな、と思っていました。最近はカラフルなグラスも良いなと思うようになったのですが、「JMG Just Murano Glass」というお店で見た黒にシルバーやゴールドのコンフェティのようなものが入っていて手で持つところが凹んでいるデザインのものを夫がとても気に入り、わたしも素敵だと思ったのでこのグラスを購入することにしました。最初に背が低い方の昨日、今日、ディナーで使った方を気に入りましたが２つしかなかったので、同じアーティストの同じシリーズの細身で背が高いもの２つと合計４つ購入しました。最近はそこでしか買えないものというのが少なくなっていて、下手すると住んでるところで同じものを見かけたりするので、海外でそれほどお買い物をしなくなった気がしますが、アーティストのものであればロンドンで普通に安く売られてる、なんてことはなさそう。お土産を買うために買ったのではなく、本当に気に入ったものと出会えて良かったですし、店主の方とのお喋りも思い出になりました。
This time in Venice, we walked quite a lot on our first day (the best pleasure in Venice is to walk in narrow streets/lanes without any particular place in mind), we’d visited touristy places when we were there when we were young, so there wasn’t anything in particular we wanted to do – so we thought “shall we go to Murano?”. We also thought if we see any glasses we like we could buy them, they will remind us of the lovely holiday. We also thought perhaps we’ll get glasses we use for water, so we’ll use them every day. Recently, I started to be attracted to more colourful glasses as well, but my husband particularly liked these black ones with specks of silver and gold and with little dents where your fingers sit that we saw in a shop “JMG Just Murano Glass”, and I also liked them very much, so we decided to buy them. First we chose shorter ones that we used at the dinner today and yesterday, but they had only 2 of them so we also bought 2 taller and narrower ones with the same design. I am very happy that we saw what we really liked rather than buying something just for the sake of buying for a memory. These days, I feel that it’s not easy to find something that you cannot buy anywhere else, you may find the same ones in a shop near your house at not very different prices, but hopefully these are a little more special. We also found that chatting with the owner was a lovely experience and a great memory.
お店の方が、このグラスはよく知られたアーィストの作品の「カイゴ」というシリーズで、イタリア語で霧の日という意味なのだと教えてくださいました。そして、以前、日本からのお客さんから、日本語でもカイゴと言って同じ意味で使うと聞いたとおっしゃっていましたが、そういう言葉ってありますか？わたしには思いつきませんでした。
The shop owner told us that they were made by a known artist and the series is called “Kaigo” (I don’t know how to spell it, it just sounded like this) and it means a misty day. She also told us that one of her customers from Japan told her there is a Japanese word that sounds exactly the same and it also means the same. I cannot think of which word it might be in Japanese, though.
それはともかく、店主の方がとても感じの良い女性で、冷たいお水を出してくださったり、帰りはここからボートに乗らないで少し先のところから乗る方が人が少なくて良いですよ、と教えてくださったり。この日もカンカン照りでとても暑かったのでジェラートの美味しいお店を教えていただいて、帰りにジェラートを食べてクールダウンしてから、ホテルに戻りました。旅行中は、ほぼ毎日ジェラートを食べていました（笑）。
Anyway, the owner lady was very nice, she gave us some cold water because it was a hot day and also told us that we shouldn’t take a boat when we leave Murano from the nearest stop, we should walk a little and take a boat from one stop further because the closer one is always full of people. She told us where we can get nice gelato (we asked), too. We had gelato on our way back to cool down before taking a boat back. We were eating gelato almost every day.
この日は、夕方６時からフードツアーの予約を入れていたのですが、このグラスを持ち歩きたくなかったので一旦ホテルに戻ったのが４時過ぎていたと思います、なので１時間ほど休憩してまた出ました。こんな時、ホテルまでボートで２０分かかり、３０分おきにしかボートがなかったので不便でした。
This day we were booked on a food tour from 6:00pm, we could have stayed in San Marco if we didn’t have these glasses to carry but we wanted to drop them off so we went back to the hotel, got there after 4:00pm, had a little rest for about an hour and took a boat back again to join the tour. I must say that we found it inconvenient to have to take a boat for 20 minutes to and from the hotel when the boat runs only every 30 minutes, it would have been easier if we were staying in the San Marco area.
