昨日はケーキを食べ終わるともう5時に近かったので、大きな本屋さん（ウォーターストーン）に行って本をあれこれ見ただけで終わりました。ロンドンでは本屋さんに行くのも楽しみの1つ。わたしたちが住む村の近くの街にも同じ本屋さんはあるのですが規模が小さいですし、座る椅子もありません。ロンドンの本屋さんにはソファーや椅子が用意されていて、座って本を見れるので、お料理の本を見るのが楽しいのです。でも、申し訳ないのですがイギリスのお料理の本はとても重いのでその場では買わないことがほとんど。
When we finished cake and tea at Sakurado, it was nearly 5:00pm so we went to a book shop (Waterstone’s). One of the things I really enjoy in London is to spend time in a large book shop and read cookery books. There is a Waterstone’s in Chichester, too, but it’s quite small so the selections aren’t great and also there are no chairs or sofas, where you can sit and read. I love being able to read cookery books in these book shops in London taking time on a chair or sofa. I feel guilty but I seldom buy any, though, because they are so heavy.
本屋さんでゆっくりした後はホテルに戻って、夕食の時間まで休憩。夕食は、「Skewer & Beer」というお店にトライしてみました。串焼きが主ですが日本の串焼きではなく中国の串焼きで、テーマは中国のストリート・フード、みたいです。串焼きのお肉はマリネなどされていなくてそのまま、焼いてから唐辛子や中国山椒につけて食べるようです。
After spending time in the book shop, we came back to our room and rested until dinner time. For dinner we went to “Skewer & Beer”. The skewers aren’t Japanese ones but Chinese. The theme seems to be “Street food in China”. The meat wasn’t marinaded, you just grill them and eat them dipping in chilli flakes or Chinese pepper.
胡瓜とピーナッツの前菜。普通に美味しかったですが事前にマリネされていないのでタレが染み込んでいないのは残念。
Cucumber & peanuts. They were fine, but they weren’t marinaded so the sauce hadn’t gone into the cucumbers, which was a shame.
茄子。とろっとして茄子そのものは美味しかったのですが、生のニンニクがたっぷりで刺激が強かったです。ニンニクは大好きなのですが、生はあまりたくさんは食べたくない。
Aubergine was very nice on its own, very soft and tasty but there was so much chopped raw garlics on it. Although I love garlic, I don’t like to eat such a large quantity raw.
事前にチェックした時はわたしも食べられそうなものがもっとあったのですが、たとえばチキンの胸肉だとかベーコンだとかはバツマークがついていて昨日はオーダー出来ず、内臓系が多くて食べらるものがほとんどなくて、オーダーしたのはトウモロコシとビーフだけ。自分達で焼いて（乗せると勝手にゆっくり回るので好みに焼けたら）食べる、という方式。
When I checked the place online, it looked like there would be enough things I could eat but we found that quite a lot of items were deleted – like chicken thighs, bacon, some other pork dish… the majority of the remaining things seemed like inner bits that I don’t eat. So these are the only skewers we ordered – sweet corn and beef. You just put them on the grill and they get rotated slowly automatically and you eat them when they are done as you like.
油葱麺。多分、中国醤油をかけただけだと思うのですが、そこに少し唐辛子と四川山椒を混ぜていただくと結構美味しかったです。
Oil & green onion noodles. I think all they do is drizzle some Chinese soy sauce over cooked noodles, but they were quite tasty with some added chilli flakes and Sichuan pepper.
最初にオーダーしたのはここまでとライスのみ。1人前のホットポットをオーダーするか迷って、とりあえずここまで食べてから決めよう、ということになったのですが、やはり物足りなかったのでオーダーしました。が、やはり思っていた通り、凄く凄く脂っこくて（写真を見てもわかりますよね？）、そして凄く凄く辛かった！唐辛子と四川山椒と両方の辛さ。底に入っていた麺を少しとじゃがいも（じゃがいもにはあまりスープは染み込まない）を少し食べて、降参でした（笑)。
This is all we ordered at first, plus rice. We thought about ordereing a hot pot but we decided to see how we would feel after eating the above. We then decided to order a hot pot because whast we’d had wasn’t enough – but as we suspected the hot pot proved to be much too oily and spicy! Spicy from both chilli powder and Sichuan pepper. We had some if the noodles (which are hidden under what you see in the photo) and slices of potato because the latter hadn’t absorbed too much of the sauce. That’s all we managed! It was soooo spicy!
お会計は、72ポンド（14300円）。高っ！デザートなし、食後の飲み物なし、食事中に飲んだのは生ビール1杯ずつだけ。串焼き以外の1品料理は1つが8ポンド（1600円）とか10ポンド（2000円）とかするので、こうなりますよね。まぁ、イギリスでは普通のお値段ではありますが、この内容には高すぎるように思いました。
The bill was £72. Wow! No dessert, no tea or coffee, all we had was one draft beer each during the meal. Except the skewers, each dish was £8 or £10 so it is expensive. I know it’s not particularly expensive for London but we felt it was quite expensive for what we had.
夕食の後、近くでオープンしていたクリスマスマーケットを覗いて、まだ口の中が四川山椒でヒリヒリしていたので甘いものでおさめたいと思い、焼きマシュマロを食べました。2つで1串をシェアーしましたが、5ポンド（1000円弱）。ぼったくりだね、と言いながら（笑）。
After the dinner, we went into the Christmas Market in Leicester Square. We wanted something sweet because the inside of our mouths were still stinging from the Sichuan pepper. We shared a stick of toasted marshmallows (2 marshmallows on one stick). It was £5! Wow!
