The 13th day in Sicily, 3rd day in Taormina. We decided to take it easy, just walk in Taormina town, have lunch then enjoy the rest of the day relaxing in the hotel.
As you can see it was another beautiful day. The clouds that were around the top of Mt Etna for the last couple of days lifted completely this morning and you can see the top of the mountain and some smoke.
The first place we went to was “Bam Bar” – the cafe famous for their handmade granita. We’d tried to go there on Sunday but it was packed so we gave up. After the long weekend finished there was plenty of room.
I ordered brioche as well as granita – almond this time. I wanted to have pistachio but they hadn’t made it yet. The waiter told us that they make one by one, so later on in the morning they would have pistachio, but not so early.
We walked in the streets, looked in shops, bought some Sicilian food like cheese, almond etc. I liked walked in these little streets and liked seeing the mountains from the main street – I grew up in the area where you can see mountains so I miss them in Singapore.
From my informations, this is the beset Pastricceria in Taormina. I wanted to buy a lot of their cookies, pastries and cakes that we could take to London and back to Singapore but it was hard to figure out which ones are what so ended up getting just a few little cookies for us. I found the shop assistants in these places not so patient… and I got overwhelmed by all kinds of things that I had never seen before.
We had panini for lunch at the large cafe at a piazza. It was outrageously expensive (I think something like 15 Euro each) but we couldn’t care less! In such a beautiful place, it didn’t feel too bad to pay a bit of silly money for lunch. It was good anyway.
Like I wrote before, I liked every city we visited in Sicily and there are a few others I’d love to revisit but I would say Taormina if I have to choose only one place to go back. It is very touristy, there is no doubt, but somehow that didn’t bother me enough not to want to go back. It felt very safe, the streets are beautiful, small enough and easy enough to know our way around. The best thing is of course the view from our hotel. It’s somewhere easy to visit just for a long weekend and enjoy ourselves if we’d lived in England. They don’t have an open market, which is the only disappointment. They have a morning market once a week but not every day. I would have wanted to go but the morning they had it was the day we left and we spent that morning visiting the Greek Theatre.
