Day 12 in Sicily / Savoca & Castelmola

シチリアに関しては、あと一息と言ったところです（笑）。

I think I’m nearly done with posts on our holiday in Sicily, just a few more.

タオルミーナについた翌日は月曜日で祭日だったので、タオルミーナの街は多分お昼頃までは混んでるだろうと思い、混雑を避けて行きたいと思っていたサヴォカという村に車で行ってみました。

The day after we arrived in Taormina was a Monday but a public holiday. Knowing the main street would be very busy, we decided to take our car and drive to Savoca near Taormina.

サヴォカは、映画「ゴッドファーザー」の撮影に使われた村として有名です。教会やカフェなど映画に登場した場所が数箇所ほぼそのまま残っているようで、ツアーもたくさん出ています。わたしたちは特別ゴッドファーザーに思い入れがあるわけでもないのですが、それを抜きにしても素敵な村という情報だったので行ってみました。

Savoca was used for filming a lot of scenes of “The Godfather” film and many places like the church and the cafe are still there without changing much and there are many tours to visit the places. It’s not that we are a big fan of “The Godfather” but the information I read all say how lovely the village is so we wanted to visit.

この日も良いお天気でした。

It as another lovely day to start with.

宿泊していたタオルミーナのホテルを出たところは、こんな様子です。右側に見えるのがホテル、細い道を挟んで向かい側の建物もこのホテルのようです。わたしたちがメインストリートまで歩くときはまっすぐ行くと見える黄色い建物の左側の坂道を登りきったところからの階段を使って降りました。

The building on the right and also on the left closest to you are the hotel we stayed at. To go down to the main street of Taormina, we walked straight, go up the steep hill onto the left and all the way up to the top, then take the stairs down from there.

サヴォカまではタオルミーナから車で４５分くらいのところなのですが、途中で道が閉鎖されていたので引き返して別の道を行くことになり、１時間ほどかかったでしょうか。ここもやはり細くてカーブのきつい山道をくねくねと走るので、運転に慣れている人でないと怖いと思います。

It’s supposed to be about 45 minutes by car from Taormina to Savoca, but one road was closed up on our way so we had to go back a little and take a different route, so I guess it took us about an hour to reach Savoca. The roads are again narrow, curvy and steep so you need to be good at driving. As we expected it was quite busy when we arrivced and had to park our car quite far from the centre of the village.

ホテルから海を眺めた左側に突き出ていた、イソラベッラ。シチリア、タオルミーナというとゴッドファーザーよりも「グランブルー」という映画を思い出す方も多いようですが（英語の字幕で見なくてはいけないので観ていない映画です）、このイゾラベッラも映画の撮影に使われたところで有名なようでした。わたしたちは時間がなかったので行きませんでしたが、見学も出きて景色も良いようです。

This is Isola Bella, where some scenes of “Le Grand Bleu” was filmed. (We haven’t watched this film because we don’t like reading English subtitles) We didn’t have time to visit but you can apparently visit there and the view is beautiful.

祭日でしたのでやはり結構酷が多かったのですが、路上駐車をすることができるところだったので中心から５分ほど歩いたところに停めて村を歩きました。

村が素敵というよりも、景色の良いところでした。

I’m not sure if I would call this village pretty, but the view was very beautiful.

ランチは軽くパニーニのつもりだったのですがそれらしきお店がなく、唯一見つけたレストランに入ってみることに。

We wanted to have something light like a panino for lunch but we couldn’t find a cafe we can sit at so we tried the only restaurant we found.

英語は全く通じませんでしたし英語のメニューもなかったのですが、イタリア語のメニューを読んでなんとかオーダー。前菜はアンティパスト（前菜類の盛り合わせ）をオーダーしました。最初に出てきたのがグリルしてマリネした玉ねぎとパプリカ、チーズ、サラミ、ピクルス、オリーブ。美味しくいただきました。

No English was spoken and there was no English menu, but we ordered trying to guess from the Italian menu. We had a plate of (?) antipasto as a starter. First we had some grilled pepper & onion, cheese, salami, pickles, sun-dried tomatoes and olives. All very good.

次はオーダーしたパスタが来ると思っていたら、まだアンティパストでした。グリルしたマッシュルームにトッピングがのっていたり、コロッケのような揚げ物など。これも美味しくいただきました。

We were expecting to get pasta next but another plate of starter arrived. Grilled mushrooms with some filling, something like potato croquette etc. Again very good.

まさか、もう来ないよね、と言っていたら来ました（笑）。マッシュルームのグリル。これも美味しくいただきました。

We were joking that “There won’t be more starter, will there?” but here it comes, another plate! Grilled mushrooms. Good again but we were getting filled up…

そして、まだ来ました（笑）。大きなリコッタチーズが２切れ。わたしは何かと一緒になら少しはいただけるのですが、このままのリコッタチーズは苦手なので１切れを夫がいただきました。

Then again! 2 large pieces of fresh ricotta. I’m not a big fan of ricotta on its own so my husband had one piece and left another piece.

パスタ。夫のパスタは多分ズッキーニが入っていたと思います。

Finally pasta! My husband’s pasta was with some courgettes, I think…

わたしは、シチリアでまだ食べていなかったアッラ・ノルマ。トマトソースにナスの揚げたものが入っていて、上からリコッタ・サラータ（塩をかけて熟成されたリコッタチーズ）をかけたもの。まぁまぁ、かな。前菜るの方が美味しかったです。

I ordered macaroni “a la Norma” as it’s something very Sicilian that I hadn’t yet had. It’s tomato sauce with some fried aubergine and topped with Ricotta Salata. It was OK, but I liked their starters better.

英語が通じませんし、地元の方たちがたくさんおられたので観光客向けのレストランではないようでした。サービスも悪くなかったですし、前菜類が美味しかったです。

No English is spoken here so I don’t think it was a touristy place, we saw a large group of local people having lunch. The service wasn’t bad either.

ランチのあと少し歩いて車に戻りホテルに向かいましたが、ついでにホテルからさらに上ったところにあるカステルモーラに行ったのですが、そのときに虹が出ていました！すごく大きなキレイな虹でしたが、写真に撮るとあまり綺麗に見えなくて残念。

After lunch, we headed back to our hotel but we decided to drive on further up the hill past our hotel to Castelmola, where we saw a beautiful rainbow! Shame I can never seem to be able to capture the beauty of a rainbow in photos.

到着して間もなく雨が降り始めてしまい、カフェでジェラートを買って少し待ってみたのですがすぐにはやみそうになかったのであきらめて帰ることに。なので、カステルモーラの村は見られず、景色だけ見て帰りました。

Soon after we arrived here, it started to rain. We bought gelato and waited a little under the roof of the cafe but it didn’t look it was going to ease off so we gave up and drove back to the hotel, so we didn’t see the village other than the view.

ホテルに戻り、４時からはお茶の時間。ラウンジでケーキやタルト、ジュース、お茶などがサービスされるのでつまみながらお茶を飲んで本を読んだりネットをしたり。

We went back to our hotel and had tea in the lounge. They have complimentary cakes, tarts, juice and tea every day from 4.00 – 5.00.

この日の夕食は、ホテルのバーで軽く。パニーニをオーダーしたのですがパニーニ用のパンがないのでとホットサンド。大きな食パンでした。これはこれで美味しかったです。ハムとレタスとトマト。

We had a light supper in the bar of the hotel because we’d had that big lunch. We ordered panini but they didn’t have panini bread so it was a hot sandwich – a huge one. It was very nice.
