若い頃に英語留学をしていたときにエクセターでホームステイをしたご家庭とは、ずっと本当の家族のようなお付き合いが続いています。「イギリスのお父さん」は１２、３年ほど前に亡くなってしまいましたが、「イギリスのお母さん」は香港に住んでいた時には２度遊びにも来てくれましたし、イギリスに行く時はほとんど（１、２度行けなかったこともありました）エクセターまで行って会うようにしています。留学した時の担当の先生だった方ともずっとお付き合いが続いているので、別々にお目にかかったり、一緒にお目にかかったり。
I went to England to learn English when I was young and stayed with an English host family. When I left England I thought I would never see them again but as I happened to get married to an Englishman I’ve been lucky enough to see them once a year or so and have been keeping the relationship like real family. My “English Dad” passed away 12 or 13 years ago or so but my “English Mum” is still there and we try to see her whenever we are in England although there have been one or two years we couldn’t. The teacher I had when I first went there became a very good friend of ours as well so we try to see them both in Exeter whenever we can.
「イギリスのお母さん」はお家に泊まるよう言われますし最初１度か２度は泊めていただいたのですが、当時は英語留学している生徒さんが数人滞在されていましたし、だんだんご高齢になってご面倒をかけるのもとホテルに滞在するようにしています。
My “English Mum” wants us to stay with her and we did for once or twice at first but they had students staying with them and then my “English Mum” got older so it’s easier for us to stay in a hotel.
近くのホテルを何箇所かトライしてみたのですが気に入らず、何度目かに良さそうだけど高いからと避けていた「Gidleigh Park」に泊まってみたところ素晴らしいホテルで、以来イギリスのお母さんに会いに行く時はずっと「Gidleigh Park」に泊まっています。ホテルについてはこれまでも何度かブログに書いたように立地も素晴らしく素敵なところですし内装も好みですが、一番大切なのはサービス。ゲストを大切に扱ってくださるのでとても居心地が良いのです。
We tried a few hotels nearby but didn’t find any that we really liked. We knew about Gidleigh Park but we thought it was too expensive so we didn’t try it at first, but in the end as we didn’t like any others we did stay there – then fell in love. The setting of the hotel is beautiful and the decor wonderful, but it’s the service that impressed us most all those years ago.

This is a photo to show you a typical scenery in Devon – you’ll see a lot of cows, horses, sheep, lambs if you go closer to the hills …like many other areas in England but I think it’s particularly beautiful in Devon.
イギリスには細い道が多く、このホテルへの道も細くくねくねした道でやっと車が１台通れるような幅のところを走ってたどり着きます。この道はその道ではないのでそれほどくねくねとはしていませんが、この状態がくねくね、と思ってください。両側にはこのように背の高いヘッジと呼ばれる垣根のようなものがあり、今の時期は葉っぱが茂っていて１台でも車にかさかさと葉っぱが当たるくらいの狭い道。ところどころに少し広げてある場所があり、対向車が来るとどちらかがそこに入り込んですれ違いますが、地元の方達は結構なスピードで走るのでどきどきします。たまにウサギやリスやラクーンが出て来たりもしますし、気が抜けません。
The lanes in England can be very narrow, wiggly and hard to drive in, and the lane to take us to this hotel is also one of them. It is very stressful to drive here specially in the summer when the hedges are so full because the lane is almost just wide enough for one car. When a car comes towards you, you or they need to get in the area where the lane is widened slightly to let the other car pass. Local people drive very fast even in such lanes and sometimes you see a hare or a squirrel or a racoon crossing the road.
くねくね道をどきどきしながら１０分か１５分走ると、ホテルが現れます。
After driving such a wiggly narrow lane for 10 or 15 minutes, you’ll see the hotel.
テラスでお茶をいただいたり、時間があれば辺りをウォーキングしたりしてのんびり過ごすのに良いところです。
It’s a wonderful place to have tea on the terrace or walk on the moor if you have time.

食事の前のアペリティフや食後の飲み物をいただいたり、お茶をいただいたり、のんびり本を読んだりして過ごすラウンジ。
We enjoy aperitif or tea/coffee after dinner or drinking tea in the afternoon or just reading here in their lounge.
お部屋はシンプルですが、アンティークの家具も置かれています。
The room is very simple.
毎回宿泊するのが楽しみなホテルなのですが、今回はがっかりすることが続きました。何年か前にオーナーが変わって以来雰囲気が変わって残念に思っていましたが（以前はとてもパーソナルで素晴らしいサービスでしたが新しいオーナーは数件ホテルを経営されていて以前のようなパーソナルなサービス感は余り感じられなくなりました）、今回は特に小さなミスがいくつも。１つ１つは大したことないミスですが、このレベルのホテルではあってほしくないミスで、それが２泊するあいだにたくさん。以前のオーナーの時からおられるスタッフの方にはお伝えしたのでここで細かく書くのは控えますが、更にスタッフの教育をされてこれからも大好きなホテルであってほしいものです。
This has been one of our favourite hotels and the hotel we have stayed most often in the last 20 years or so. However, the owner changed some years ago and the atmosphere also changed – it doesn’t feel quite as personal as before any more. It’s still been lovely to stay here but this time we experienced that the service wasn’t as good as in the past. They made many small mistakes. They are all fairly trivial mistakes but you don’t expect this level of hotel to make them, especially one after another. I’m not going to write all about them because we told one of the staff who had been there since the previous owner and know they are trying to keep the standards. I hope they will.
