ムンバイの次の目的地は、インド北西部のラジャスターン州にあるウダイプールというところ。白い建物が多いので、ホワイトシティーなどとも呼ばれています。ムンバイはやや暑かったですが（それでもシンガポールほど湿度が高くないのでシンガポールよりかなりましで、日陰ではそう暑くなかったです）、ラジャスターンは日差しはきつかったですが、朝夕は寒いくらいで、昼間はそこそこ気温も上がりましたが湿度が低く過ごしやすいところでした。ただし、これは２月だからで、暑い時は４０度まで気温が上がってとても暑くなるようです。
The next destination after Mumbai was Udaipur in Rajasthan state, north west of India. It has lots of white buildings so is also called the “White City”. Mumbai was a little hot (but not as humid as in Singapore so it was easier to cope specially in the shade), but in Rajasthan it was chilly in the mornings and evenings and quite nice during the day, when the temperature goes up to something like 27C, but dry. (I just checked the weather, it’s much hotter now than when we were there, seems to be going up to 33C, 34C now. ) It was quite pleasant for me. However, it does go up to 40C during the summer. February seems the best time.
まずは、空港からホテルまでに道で車から撮った風景。ここではやはり牛がいっぱいいました。女性の服装も、ムンバイとは全然違います。
Here are a few photos I took from a car window between the airport and our hotel. We saw a lot of cows! The clothes ladies wear are quite different from Mumbai, too.
当然なのかもしれませんが、土を掘り起こすような仕事をしている女性も民族衣装を着ていたのが印象的でした。働きにくそうですけどね。
I guess it’s not so strange to Indian people but I was quite surprised to see ladies wearing such clothes even when they are digging the roads, they don’t seem to be suitable for such work.
宿泊したホテルは、「The Lake Palace」。ピチョーラ湖中の小島に宮殿として建てられた大理石の建物。一度は泊まってみたいホテルに挙げられるインドでは憧れのホテルです。ホテル専用の船着場からボートで渡るので、気分も盛り上がります。ホテルに到着すると首からお花のレイをかけられインドの大きな傘をさしかけてもらい、ドアの前まで行くと上からバラの花が舞ってくるというサービス付き。
The hotel we stayed at is The Lake Palace, which was built as a palace in a little island in the Lake Pichola using white marble. It’s often listed as one of the ‘must-stay’ hotels you should use in India. You take their boat to get there from the hotel’s pier, which seems to make it even more special. When you arrive at the hotel, you will get a flower lei and a guard will come to cover you with the shade from an umbrella, and when you stand in front of the hotel’s gate, rose petals will be scattered on you from above.
お部屋の内装はとてもデコラティブ。インドらしくてこれはこれで面白かったです。バスルームもお部屋もムンバイのタージマハールホテルほどにはピカピカの印象ではなく、バスルームは改装の必要があるのではと思いましたが、タージマハールホテルよりもずっと古い建物なので致し方ないのかもしれません。大理石を磨くなどできることがあるようには思いましたが。バスルームもお部屋も狭めなので、出来ればもう少し広いお部屋に滞在できれば更に滞在を楽しめると思います。
The room decor is very decorative – not really to our taste but very India and interesting. Both the room and the bathroom weren’t as sparkling as those in the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai, but this hotel is quite a lot older than the Taj Mahal Hotel so maybe that cannot be helped although I thought they could polish the marbles etc. The room and the bathroom are smallish as well, if you can splurge it’s better to stay in a larger room.
プレゼントに傘がありました。可愛くて素敵なのですが、日除けにはあまり役立たないですし、家でデコレーションに使うのもちょっと違う気がして、お気持ちだけいただいてお部屋に置いてきました。
There was a lovely umbrella as a present, which is very pretty. However, it’s not really useful for covering myself with shade (since it’s quite see-through) and I didn’t think it’ll go with our decor at home so we left it in the room.
傘に隠れていたのは、バースデーケーキ。いただきませんでしたが、多分チョコレートケーキだと思います。
Beyond the umbrella, there was a birthday cake. We didn’t eat it but I think it was a chocolate cake.
実はホテルについてレイをかけてくださったとき、夫に「ハッピーバースデー」とおっしゃっていて、チェックインのときにもまたそうおっしゃったので、笑いながら「バースデーじゃないんですけど〜」という話になったのですが、パスポートのコピーも渡っているはずなのに何かの間違いでそういう情報が届いていたようです。人間違いだったのではないかと思います。
When we were given flower leis someone said “happy birthday” to my husband, then when we checked in the staff said the same thing so we laughed and told them it wasn’t his birthday. They have a copy of our passports so it seemed strange to make such a mistake but I guess they mistook him for someone else.
