The Last Day In Exeter

(The fonts have gone wild, my apologies, I’ll try to fix them later!!)

Lunch my friend in Exeter prepared for me. She also gave me Apple Compote she made from the apples from her garden as a dessert. We chatted a while then she gave me a lift to the train station.

This is Exeter Cathedral.

When I got on the first train, I found my assigned seat and saw someone sitting there with a man next to her. I said to her “Excuse me, I think that is my seat.”  She looked at me with a bit annoyed expression and pointed the things that show if it’s taken or not with green or red light that were not working and said “it’s not showing.” So I looked around and said “Right, it doesn’t seem working but I do have a ticket with the seat number.”  Then the man next to her glares at me and says ‘Do you insist sitting here?!”  I was sort of confused and said “Well, but it is my seat, I think, or do you have the same number on your ticket?”  He glares up at me again and says “So, you insist sitting here?!”  I was very confused and a bit frightened as he was quite scary but I said “Emmm, I think so, I would like to sit in my seat.”   For all this time I’m checking with my ticket to make sure I’m at the right seat thinking “Am I at a wrong one?” I said “You have seats assigned?”   She says”Yes, but some other people are sitting in them so we sat here, can’t you just sit somewhere else?”  So I said “ Well, if I do and someone else comes I’ll have to move again, I don’t want to keep moving.”  She says to the man, “What do you think?”  Then the man starts gathering his stuff and moves, the woman does the same and says “Now we have to move someone else!”  I don’t know why but I ended up saying ‘sorry” and she says “A bit late for that, isn’t it?”  Then she goes to her seat and says to those sitting at their seats “Sorry, I have to ask you to move because we were moved by her.”

Why didn’t they explain to me nicely in the first place and why should I be made to look I was demanding something unreasonable?

Then we were getting near the station I needed to change at so about 5 minutes before arriving I got my luggage and moved to the closest door.  It arrived in the station but the door would not open and there were a few other people in front of me and one kept pushing the button but the door wouldn’t open. We waited for a minute or so and moved to the next car, same thing.  Waited for something to happen but nothing, no announcement.  This train was late by about 6 or 7 minutes when we stopped and the changing time was a bit tight, we should have had about 15 minutes but it was late to arrive and we’d been waiting as the door wouldn’t open.  Many others were obviously in the same situation because they were all looking at their watches and getting very agitated.  We then started to walk and kept walking probably for 3 more cars and were finally able to get off.  The next train was just across the platform so we just run and made it.  Looking back I saw that they were doing something work on that platform and I saw those red and white barricade where we would have got off so I guess they stopped too far back but why couldn’t they move further, why there was no announcement? I don’t think I missed the announcement because so many English people were doing the same. They really should do better.

This train I got on next had no aircon, it was very hot and the little top window that could open wasn’t working so I was very hot, too.

I have to say I will avoid traveling on public transportation in England as much as I can, it really is unpleasant.

Anyway, I didn’t miss any connection and got picked up at the station by my friends, all was well in the end.
