クリスマス当日の今日は、寒いけれど良いお天気になりました。雪が降ってくれると最高だったのですが、そこまでは寒くなかったです。北の方では降ったようです。

It was a lovely day today, very cold but sunny.  It would have been wonderful if it had snowed but it wasn’t that cold although it did snow in the north.

イギリスでは、２５日、クリスマスの日当日の遅いお昼にクリスマスディナーでお祝いするのが一般的です。我が家でも今日のお昼にクリスマスディナーをいただきました。（去年はホテルディナーでしたが）これまでずっと、２５日当日ではなくてもその前後に夫がターキーを焼いてくれていました。日本ではわたしの家族が来てくれていたものの、香港やシンガポールでは２人だけのことも多かったのですが、それでも１羽焼いて余ったターキーは教会に寄付していました。でも、今年はいつも行くお肉屋さんでターキーの胸肉にソーセージのお肉を詰めてくるっと丸めて焼くだけの状態になっているものをオーダーしておいて、オーブンで焼くだけけにしました。他には、定番のローストポテト、ローストパースニップ、茹でた芽キャベツ、細くて小さいチポラタと呼ばれるソーセージにベーコンを巻いたもの、スタッフィング（詰め物を別に焼いた物）、グレービー。わたしは例えば芽キャベツを栗とオーブンで焼いたり、パースニップもメープルシロップを絡めて焼いたりいろいろしてみたいのですが、夫は一番シンプルな子供の時から食べている物が良いようなので、お任せ。わたしも少しだけ手伝いましたが、夫がほとんど作ってくれました。

In England, those who celebrate Christmas usually have Christmas dinner at lunch time on the 25th and that was what we did.  Last year we had our Christmas lunch at the hotel we stayed at but until last year my husband has always cooked a whole turkey and all the trimmings every year even when it was just for the two of us.  My family used to come for the meal when we were in Japan, but in Hong Kong and Singapore it was often just two of us (other than a few occasions we had friends join us), but we still had a whole turkey and gave whatever was left to the church.  This year, we ordered from the butcher we often go to a rolled and stuffed turkey breast in advance. No preparation necessary – we just had to put it in the oven.  We also had the usual trimmings – roast potatoes, roast parsnips, boiled Brussels sprouts, chipolata sausages wrapped in bacon, stuffing and gravy.  If it were up to me I would like to try different things like roasting Brussels sprouts with chestnuts or drizzling parsnip with Maple syrup but my husband wants to have them done very simply just like he used to have when he was a child.  My husband did most of the cooking and I helped just a little – though I did most of the cleaning up.

ただ、スタッフィングだけはわたしが前日作ります。今日のスタッフィングはソーセージのお肉だけが詰めてあったようで、ターキーも胸肉なので詰め物も美味しかったのですが、一羽丸焼きの詰め物にはパン粉が入っていてターキーの脂やジュースを吸ってそれが美味しいのだと思いますが、わたしはターキーの味は苦手ですし、べちゃっとした食感も苦手。香港でカナダ人のお友達にクリスマスディナーに来ていただいたときにスタッフィングを作って持って来てくださってそれがとても美味しかったので、それ以来、わたしがそれに似たものを 作って、いつもはターキーに詰めて、余ったものは別に焼いていただきます。ソーセージのお肉を焼いたもの、玉ねぎ、りんご、セロリを炒めたもの、パンをごろごろ切ったもの、セージを入れました。

どれも、とても美味しかったです！

I did make the stuffing, though, last night.  The stuffing in the turkey breast today was just sausage meat and it was very good, it didn’t taste gamy because it was stuffed in just the turkey breast rather than a whole turkey.  However, usually, the stuffing we do has breadcrumbs and is stuffed inside a whole turkey so it absorbs the fat and juice from the whole bird and becomes very soggy and gamy.  In Hong Kong a Canadian friend made and brought stuffing to us when we invited her and her husband to Christmas dinner and I loved it, so since then I’ve been making something very similar – I use sausage meat, onion, apple, celery, bread cut in chunks and sage.

Everything was delicious!

デザートは、クリスマスプディングとミンスパイ。今年はスティッキー・トフィー・クリスマスプディングを買ってみたのですが、普通のクリスマスプディングにソースがついていただけでした。わたしはクリスマスプディングはやっぱり苦手で、一口でギブアップ。

The dessert was Christmas pudding and mince pies.  This year we bought “sticky toffee Christmas pudding” from M&S thinking I may prefer it, but it turned out to be an ordinary Christmas pudding with a little sachet of sticky toffee pudding sauce, so as usual I had just one little mouthful.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

食事の後、後片付けをして、クイーンのスピーチをテレビで見て、プレゼントを開けてから歩いて１５分程度のところにある村の池までお散歩しました。イギリス人はクリスマスの日、ランチの後お散歩するのが習慣のようです。お天気が良かったのですが、もう夕方みたいな空でした。

After lunch, I did the washing up and cleaning up, we watched the Queen’s speech on TV, opened the presents, then had a little walk in the village.  It was just to the pond and back, so only about 15 minutes one way.  It seems like a custom to have a walk after Christmas lunch in England.  It was lovely to be able to do that.

 

 

お散歩から戻って、リビングでドラマや映画を見て、夜はお腹が空かないのでお茶とパネトーネ。ホテル滞在ができなかったのは残念ですが、夫と２人で穏やかで楽しいクリスマスの１日でした。

After we got back from the walk, We talked to my husband’s brother and his family on the phone, and watched a drama on TV.  In the evening, we had tea with Pannetone as we weren’t very hungry, and watched a film.  Although it was a shame that we weren’t able to go and stay at the hotel we love in Devon, it was a very peaceful and lovely Christmas with my husband.

ところで、クリスマスの時期にクリスマスっぽい映画を見る方も多いのではと思いますが、皆さんどんな映画をご覧になっているのでしょう。我が家は、毎年同じような映画を見ています。もっと新しくてクリスマスに見るのにふさわしい映画はないの？と探してトライしてみたりするのですが、途中まで見て、やっぱり面白くいないということになり、いつもの古い映画を見ることになってしまいます。一昨日は、The Holiday を見て、昨日は Love Actually を見て、今日は、Notting Hill （これはクリスマスとは関係ない気がしますが）を見ました。

Incidentally, I imagine many people watch Christmassy films around this time and I wonder what sort of films you watch.  We watch the same ones every year, they are all very old and we try to find some newer ones and even watch the first 10 minutes or so but we haven’t been able to find anything newer, we end up watching the same old films.  We watched The Holiday on the day before, Love Actually yesterday and Notting Hill (this one isn’t really Christmassy but we still watch it) today.
