家にいるともうほとんど咳は出ないのですが、外出して冷たい空気を吸い込んだり話しをしようとして息を吸い込むと咳が出てくるのが困ります。が、もう声も鼻声ではなくなってきましたし、９割元気になりました。

I hardly cough when I am at home but when I am outside inhaling the cold air, or when I try to talk, I start coughing, which is very annoying.

今日は、夫の弟夫婦とランチ（クリスマスランチ）をして来ました。２人に会うのは久しぶりです、何ヶ月ぶりでしょうか、たぶん８月に泊まりに来てくれて以来ではないかと思います。シンガポールにいた時の方がよく会っていました。ロックダウンのせいもありますが、２人ともお仕事などでお忙しいのでいつの間にか何ヶ月も経ってしまう、と言う感じです。

We went to Old Windsor to have lunch with my husband’s younger brother and his wife.  It’s been a while since we saw them, I think the last time when we saw them was when they came to stay with us back in August.  Strangely we used to see them more often when we lived in Singapore!  They are both quite busy and this pandemic is also a problem but I guess it’s just that weeks and months seem to fly by without us realising it.

場所は、義弟夫婦の住むオールド・ウィンザーにある「The Loch & The Tyne by Adam Handling」という今年５月にオープンした新しいパブレストラン。エコガーデンを作って食材を自分たちで育てたり、雨水を利用したり、残り食材をコンポストにして使うなどサステインナブルなパブレストランなのだそうです。

So, the place they suggested for lunch was a pub restaurant in Old Windsor “The Lock & The Tyne by Adam Handling”, which opened in May this year.  Apparently they aim to be a very sustainable restaurant, growing their ingredients, using rainwater, using food for compost etc in their eco-garden.

 

 

 

 

 

お料理を待っている間に、サワドーパンとバターが出てきましたが、わたしはちょこっとこのバターをつけて食べて「魚臭い！」と思ってしまいました。その後夫と義弟も食べてみて、「う〜ん、なんだろう、アンチョビのフライかな？」と言っていたのですが、チキンの皮のフライでした。なんか、魚臭かったんですよね。チキンって魚臭いこと、ありますよね。

While we were waiting for our lunch, they served us sourdough bread and some kind of butter, which I thought was “fishy” when I tried a little.  My husband and his brother couldn’t identify what these crispy bits are either and we were wondering if they were fried anchovies, but we found out later that they were fried chicken skin.  Sometimes chicken can taste a bit fishy and this one seemed to – to me anyway.

 

義弟とわたしはビーフバーガー。かなりなボリュームです。レタスとトマトとバーガーとフライドオニオンが挟んであって、バンズはブリオッシュ生地だと思います。とても美味しかったのですが、残念なことにバーガーそのものがわたしには塩辛すぎました。パンやトマトをたくさん一緒に食べればなんとか食べることが出来ましたが、パテにお塩が混ざってしまっているので、次回行った時にお塩を減らしてください、とも言えないのが残念です。ま、でも、その時によって塩加減は違う可能性は十分あると思います。チップスがたくさんついてきたのですが、バーガーが大きくてチップスまで辿り着けずほとんど残しました。

My brother-in-law and I both had the Beef Burger, which was quite large.  It had tomato, lettuce, fried onion and cheese (though I requested no cheese) in Brioche buns.  It tasted very nice but sadly the burger itself was too salty for me.  I was able to eat it (but not all) with lots of bread, tomato and lettuce but I would have enjoyed it more if it weren’t so salty.  As the burgers are prepared in advance with the salt mixed in I would not be able to ask them to reduce the salt if I wanted to order it again next time.  Still, I guess I can take a chance that they are different every time.  It came with lots of fat chips, but I only managed one piece because the burger was very filling.

 

夫と義弟の奥さんは、ターキーとソーセージをベーコンで焼いたもの。イギリスのクリスマス料理、です。が、バーガーがすごく大きかったのに比べて、こちらはかなり小さくてびっくり。添え野菜もついてこないのです。ただ、お会計がとってもリーズナブルだと思ったので、添え野菜は好みのものを別オーダーというシステムだと思えば、これはこれでオーケーかと思います。

My husband and his sister-in-law had Turkey and Sausage in Bacon.  Comparing to the large burger, this looked a tiny portion and it doesn’t come with any vegetables at all, which surprised me.  However, the bill was, we thought, very reasonable so I guess we can just take it as a system that allows you to choose the side vegetables that you like to order separately.

 

 

添え野菜は、ローストしたポテトと芽キャベツをシェアしていました。ローストしたポテトは写真を撮り忘れていましたが、普通のローストポテトとは違って、四角く切ったものそれぞれに細かい切り込みを入れてローストしてあり、カリカリで美味しかったです。芽キャベツもとても美味しかったです。

They ordered roast potatoes and roast Brussel’s sprouts.  I seem to have forgotten to take photos of the potatoes but they weren’t usual roast potatoes, they were cut in square shape and fine incisions were made nearly all the way through but not quite – so they were very crunchy.  The Brussel’s sprouts were also very tasty.

 

デザートは、義弟夫婦はそれぞれにクリスマスプディング。クリスマスプディングとクリスマスケーキの間のような感じのものでした。

For dessert, my brother-in-law and his wife each had Christmas Pudding, which was more like something between Christmas Pudding and Christmas Cake.

 

 

わたしと夫はフォンダン・ショコラをシェアー。シェアーと言ってもわたしは小さな２口食べて降参でした。こんなに中がとろとろなので焼きすぎということはないと思うのですが、なぜか外側の生地は焼きすぎたような硬めのケーキっぽい食感で、中は中でとろとろ過ぎて、なんか違う。夫は問題なく完食。

My husband and I shared Fondant Chocolat – well I say “shared” but I had 2 little bits and my husband finished the rest.  I find it hard to understand but for some reason the inside was much more meltingly soft than you would expect but the outside had the texture of a normal baked cake rather than the normal softer texture.  Something wasn’t quite right to me but my husband didn’t have any problem finishing it all.

 

前菜はいたただかずメインのみ、お水はガス入りも普通のも無料、夫と義弟はビールを１パイント、義弟の奥さんとわたしはお水だけ、デザートは４人で３つ、と少なめのオーダーではありましたが、４人分で１１５ポンド（１７３００円）とイギリスのある程度のレベルのレストランのお会計にしてはお安いと思いました。

We didn’t order starters, water was free (for both sparkling and still).  My husband and his brother had a pint of bitter each, my sister-in-law and I had just water.  Three desserts between 4 of us.  So I guess we ordered a little less than we usually would but the total bill of 115 pounds sounds inexpensive for  an upmarket pub.

今のオミクロンが急拡大している状況から周りのお友達たちもみなさん人に会うのを控えておられ、わたしも今週のコーヒーモーニングをキャンセルしましたし、来週初めに予定していたお友達とのランチもキャンセルすることになりました。去年我慢された方も多い中、もしなにかあってクリスマスに家族と集まれなくなるのは残念過ぎますからね。ということで、今年のクリスマスランチ／ディナーは、先週のお友達ご夫婦とのディナーと今日の義弟夫婦とのランチでお終いです。香港やシンガポールではこの時期、たくさんのお友達とパーティーをしたり食事に出かけたり、楽しかったな〜、と懐かしく思い出しています。ま、ここでは事情が許していても数人しか知り合いがいないのですが、早くもう少しお友達との時間を楽しめることが出来るようになってほしいものです。

Considering the situation with Omicron, people around me are not gathering with friends very much.  I cancelled the coffee morning the other day and we decided to cancel the lunch gathering with our friends that was planned for early next week, too.  It would be so sad if people cannot spend Christmas with their close families.  So, this year, we only had one Christmas dinner with our friend couple last week and this Christmas lunch today.  Recently, I often think of the time I had with my friends in Hong Kong and Singapore at this time of year, having parties at home or going out to restaurants, I had such a lot of fun with them.  Not that we would have had many gatherings here in the U.K. as we don’t know that many people here, but it would be nice to be able to enjoy this festive time with more people once the pandemic is over.
