数日前から今日は嵐「ユニス」がイギリスの南の方を通過してこれまでにない強風が吹くので注意するようにとの警報が出ていて、聞いたことがない Red Weather Warning というのが出ています。ただ、夫が調べてみたところ、風の強さは香港の台風のシグナル３くらいの強さだそうです。（香港の台風のシグナルは１から１０まであって、８になったら外出禁止、１０は直撃。）この辺りはお昼頃に停電して、調理器具も電気ですし、冷凍庫にはお肉類が少なくなったので先日買って冷凍したばかりのものがたくさん入っていて、アイスクリームも入っているので復旧まで時間がかかったら困るな〜と思っていましたが、幸い２時間ちょっとで復旧されました、良かった〜。停電の間はコンピューターが使えないのはもちろん、電話のシグナルも１本だったので電話でのネットも出来ず、手持ち無沙汰でしたし、停電の期間が２時間とか３時間とかわかっていれば不安もないのですが、何日も復旧しない可能性もありますし（夫はこの辺りではそんなことにはならないと言っていましたが家族や友達ともコンタクトが取れないくてちょっと不安でした。

There have been warnings that Storm Eunice will come to the south of England with the strongest winds in the last 30 years, and “Red Weather Warning”, which I didn’t know existed, had been issued.  Having said that, my husband found out that the strength of the wind is only about the same as Typhoon Signal 3 in Hong Kong (it starts from 1 and goes up to 10, at 8 you aren’t supposed to go out and 10 means direct hit).  Here, we had a power cut around lunch time for a couple of hours.  As our cooking equipment is electric and we bought quite a lot of meat and put them in the freezer just the other day we were a little worried, especially about the things in the freezer, but fortunately it came back after 2 hours or so.  Phew!  While the power is cut, we couldn’t use computer of course but also could not use the phone, as there was no phone signal.  If we know it’ll be just for 2 or 3 hours it’s not so bad but not knowing for how long makes me uneasy.  It could have been for days – although my husband said it wouldn’t be in this area – and we weren’t able to even contact our friends or families.

停電している間に、夫が「念の為、お隣に行ってお隣も停電してるか聞いてくる。」と行ったのですが、お隣ではお茶を入れるためにキャンプ用の調理器でお湯を沸かしているところだったそうです。そうそう、イギリスの人は１日にお茶を何倍も飲む人が多く、特にこんな時は必ず「とりあえず、お茶淹れよう。」ということになるのです。お茶を沸かすのはほとんどのご家庭で電気ケトルで沸かしますし、ガス調理器のところは良いのですが最近は電気のところが多いので、こういうとき不便ですよね。

When we had no power, my husband went to our next door neighbour’s just to check that the power cut wasn’t just our house.  Apprently they were boiling water using some camping equipment so they can make tea!  Of course, they need tea at such a time!  Large numbers of people in England drink many cups of tea a day, and the first thing they do when there is anything like this is to “put the kettle on”.  As most people use electric kettles, unless they have gas cookers, you cannot make tea if the power is off.

我が家にはずっとお鍋などのときに使う携帯ガスコンロがありましたが、シンガポールを出る時に事情があって手放しました。その時点で検索した時は日本のものを取り扱うネットのお店にあったのでイギリスで買えば良いと思っていたのですが、いざ買おうと思ったらそのお店にはなくなっていて、アマゾンで検索したらちょっと馬鹿馬鹿しいお値段だったので、IHのものを買ったのです。普段はそれで良いのですが、こういうとき、やはり携帯ガスコンロも持っている方が良いですね。そういえば、阪神大震災の時はわたしたちは神戸にいたのですが、反対に電気はすぐに復旧しましたがガスはなかなか復旧せず、電気のスロークッカーやパン屋機器がとても役立ったことを思い出します。やはり、念の為、両方ある方が良いなと実感しました。

We always had one of those portable gas cookers that every Japanese household has until we left Singapore, but we needed to leave it behind.  When I searched online I did find one of the online shops that handle Japanese groceries carried them, but somehow they’ve now stopped carrying them.  I searched on Amazon but the prices are ridiculous so we decided to get one of the IH ones, which is fine usually but not useful when we have a power cut.  We are thinking we should get a gas one for such occasions.  I remember when we had the Hanshin Earthquake when we lived in Kobe all those years ago, it was the opposite – the electricity came back on quickly but it took ages for the gas supply to come back and, since we had a gas cooker, an electric slow cooker and a bread machine were very useful things to have.

そして、心配していたお庭の植物は、赤い方のクリスマスローズが折れてしまった以外は無事です。細い木々はサポートがとてもしっかりしていて大丈夫そう。ただ、フェンスの上の一部が外れました。一部外れたところはフェンスと地面との間に少し穴があって、そこから多分ハリネズミくんが行き来するので塞がなかったのですが、今日の強風で緩んでしまったようで、ピークを過ぎた今も強風でかなりぐらぐらと揺れていて、あれが倒れたら手前の木々も倒れそうなので早急に修理の必要ありですが、こういうときはたくさんのフェンスが壊れてしまうので大工さんたちはお忙しくなりなかなか来てもらえないとは思います。

We were very worried today about our new plants in our garden but they are OK.  Another one of the Christmas Roses was broken but all the other plants seem to have survived.  The supports of the thin new trees seem very firm, they looked fine with strong wind.  However, a top of a part of one our fences came undone and that part was moving a lot when the strong wind was hitting it, we were worried it may fall and hit the new trees.  There is quite a large gap between the ground and the bottom of the fence in that part but we left it because that’s where hedgehogs come and go, but that is why it moved back and forth more than other parts and made one part come undone.  It needs repairing soon so that there won’t be any more damage but I expect it’ll take a while to find a carpenter to do that because they get much busier than ever after such a storm.

先ほど、ヘイスティング近くのお友達にメッセージしてみたら、お庭にある小屋（お庭関係の道具など入れる小さな小屋）の１面の壁が壊れて外れてしまったそうです（涙）。いろいろなものが飛んでくる可能性もあるので外出は控えるようにと言われていますが、出勤しなくては行けない方々もおられるので、被害がないことを祈ります。

When I contacted our friends, who live near Hastings, I found out that a wall of their shed in their garden had come down!  As anything can be flying around, you are not supposed to go out today, but there are people who have to go to work.  I hope nobody will get hurt.

お庭全体ににょきにょきと水仙の茎と葉っぱが伸びてきていますし、２年前に植えたチューリップらしきものもところどころに出てきているみたいです。

The daffodils etc are growing taller everywhere in our garden, I think I can see some tulips, which were planted 2 years ago.

スノードロップは、こんなふうに、うねうねとしたラインに植えられています。２２５本と聞いてそんなに？と思いましたが、１つ１つがとっても小さいのでお庭全体に植えるとあまり目立たない量でした。義弟夫婦に聞いてみたところ、短期間にどんどん増えるものではなさそうなので来年足しても良いかなと思うくらいです。

Snowdrops were planted like this in a wavy line all over the garden.  We bought 225 of them, which seemed excessive, but they are so small they really don’t look much.  My brother-in-law and his wife didn’t think they multiply very fast, so we should probably add more next year.
