Garden Update – Wisteria etc

今日もとっても良いお天気で、気温は１６度ですが陽が当たるところにいると暑いくらいです。このところお天気が良く暖かくなったので、お庭の植物も毎日ぐんぐんと成長しています。

It’s a beautiful day today, the temperature is 16C so not that high but it feels very hot if you stand in the sun. It’s been sunny and warm in the last few days so plants are growing very fast.

秋に植物を植えた時に藤も植えました。日本では藤の花というと棚の上から垂れ下がるように咲いていますが（綺麗ですよね）、こちらでは壁などに這わせて育てるのが一般的だと思います。我が家では塀にワイヤーをとりつけていて、そこに絡まるように植えてあります。ずっと枯れたような枝しかなかったのですが少し前から蕾がついていて、今日初めてお花が咲き始めました！これから、たくさん咲いたところを見るのがとっても楽しみです。

In autumn, we had a wisteria planted. In Japan, wisterias are grown so the flowers would dangle from high up on some shelf type of structure and they look beautiful but here I think most of them are grown on some sort of a wall vertically. We have ours on our fence and we are training the branches on the wires on the fence. Until recently, all we saw was dead-looking branches but I noticed buds a little whie ago and they started opening today! We are looking forward to seeing a lot of flowers.

２つの丸いプランターに植えたチューリップも、１つのプランターのものはたくさん咲きました。ずいぶん早くからチューリップの球根をオーダーしていたのに、植える時期が近づいてから「品切れになってしまいました、別のチューリップをオーダーしてください」とメールがきて、もうその頃には種類もすごく少なくなっていてほとんど種類がないなかから選んだ２種類が植わっているのですが、今のところ１つの種類しか咲いていません。すごく大きなお花なのでプランターが小さく見えますが、直径５０センチ以上ある結構大きなプランターです。

The tulips in one of the 2 large round planters are all flowering now. I ordered a set of tulip bulbs (3 different kinds) months ahead but when the time to plant came near I received an email telling me those ones were out of stock and asking me to order from what was still available. By then of course there weren’t many choices so I did choose 2 of them but not necessarily what I would have preferred. Anyway, it looks like only 1 of the 2 kinds we planted are flowering so far. No flowers are out yet in the other pot. These planters don’t look very big because the tulip heads are so large, but they are larger than 50cm diameter.

アリウムももうすぐ咲き始めそうな気配です、たくさんある他のも次々に咲き始めるはず。

One allium looks like it won’t be long before it opens up and many others will follow soon.

ピオニーは、３つずつ２箇所に、全部で６つ植えたのですが、１つだけが大きく育っていて、他はまだすごく小さかったり目が出ていなかったり。育っている１つは、この数日でぐんと背が伸びました。

We planted 3 peony roots each in 2 different places but so far only 1 is growing really well, others are still small and one of them hasn’t come out yet. This one grew so much in the last few days.

モックオレンジもたくさん咲きました。写真ではそれほどわからない気はしますが、真っ白なお花なので遠くからでも結構目立ちます。特に好きなお花ではないのでリノベーションの時に他のものに植え替えることも考えたのですが、小さな苗ばかりでお庭がスカスカになってしまうのでとりあえず残しました。グリーンばかりのところにたくさん白いお花が咲いたので、このコーナーがふわっと明るくなった気がします。このコーナーは塀の向こうに植わっている木の枝が大きく出てきていて結構影になってしまうので、植えるものを選びます。保護されている木なので枝を切ることも許可なしでは出来ないのです。

The mock orange is flowering well. I don’t think the photos show them very well but as they are a bright white that you can see from far away. To be honest I don’t particularly like them and we thought about removing them and planting some other plants when we had the garden renovated last autumn, but we decided to keep them for now because the garden would have looked very bare without them. Unfortunately, the tree behind our fence is protected so we cannot cut the branches, which makes a large area of shade. Anyway, I think the white flowers made this area look brighter.
