昨日書きましたが、手前の大きな方のパティオに置いてある大きなポットに春まで楽しめる植物の植え込みをしました。同じ植物の組み合わせで表玄関のポーチに置いてある小さなポットにも先日夫が植え込みをしてくれています。ガーデンセンターで売られているこの時期に植え込みができるお花って本当に限られていて、ヴィオラやバイオレット、シクラメン、プリムローズ、クリスマスローズくらいです。冬は暗いので明るい色のお花を考えていたのですが思うような色合いのものがなく、結局白にしてみました。白も結構明るいですし、ご近所で白いお花をポットに植え込んでいるのを見かけないのでちょっと違っているのも良いかと。シクラメン、プリムローズ、スキミア、もう１つうっすらピンクの実のついたのはなんという植物でしょう？こちらでは、ボックスベリーと呼ばれているみたいです。

As I wrote yesterday, we potted some plants that we can enjoy until spring.  My husband planted the same plants (but fewer) in the small pot we have on the front porch the other day, too.  There aren’t that many kinds of  flowers you can plant at this time of year (that are flowering now) in garden centres, mostly violas, violets, cyclamens, primroses and Christmas roses.  As winter is very dark in England I was thinking of planting some bright colour flowers but I didn’t see many choices and I didn’t like any of the pinks, so we decided to plant white ones.  White is quite bright and we don’t see many white flowers potted around here so it’s something different.  We cheated big time this time, we just bought a few planter baskets with a few different plants already planted –  Cyclamens, primroses, skimmia and boxberry, I think, and we just took them out and arranged them in similar way in our 2 large pots on the main patio, and 1 smaller pot.

 

 

 

 

 

 

まだ大きなポット２つは空っぽですが、近いうちに春の球根を植えます。でもSarah Raven のニュースレターに「今年は暖かいので、チューリップはなるべく遅い時期に植えましょう。」と書かれていたので、もう少し先でも良さそうです。チューリップは早い時期に植えるとカビが生えてしまったりするので、寒くなってからの方が良いらしいです。

The other 2 large pots on our small patio are still empty, but we will plant spring bulbs in them sometime soon.  However, I don’t think we need to hurry because we received a news letter from Sara Raven, which told us that we should plant tulip bubls as late as we can because it’s been so warm so far this autumn.  Apparently, if you plant them too early they can get mould or some disease so it’s better to wait until it gets properly cold.

 

 

 

 

春の球根と言えば、ポットに植え込みをした後、少しゼラニウムを刈ったり枯れ葉を集めたりしたのですが、いくつか球根類の芽が伸びていました。ヒアシンスはそこそこ伸びていましたし、他にもいくつかちょこちょこと。なので、出来るだけ早くマルチングをした方が良さそうです。

Talking about spring bulbs, after I planted the pots with my husband, I did some weeding and cutting back the geraniums, as well as collecting leaves, and saw some bulbs already starting to shoot up.  The hyacinths that I planted early this year (our neighbour friends brought a pot of  them so I planted them in the garden after the flowers finished) looked as high as about 10cm, I also saw a few other shoots here and there.  I suppose it means we need to hurry mulching the rest of the garden as we need to do it before more bulbs come out!

It looks like something has nibbled the hyacinths (maybe one of the family of squirrels that seem to live nearby) .

 

 

ペンステモンやサルビアは春まで刈り込まずに春になってから刈り込むとネット情報にはあるのですが、マルチングをするためにはやはり刈ってしまわないといけないようなので、近いうちに刈り込んでマルチングをしなくては。まだそこそこ咲いていますし、グリーンだけでもあると良い感じなので倒れてきたもの以外はそのまましておきたかったのですが。

According to the information I’ve read online you are supposed to leave penstemons and salvias until spring, then cut them back, but we need to cut them back to be able to mulch the garden.  As we still see some flowers and even having green leaves is quite nice (except those that fell over) so we would have liked to leave them as they are but we are told by our garden designer that we need to cut them down before the bulbs that are in the same area come out.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

去年アネモネをたくさん植えたはずなのですが芽を出したのは数えるほどだったので、今年１０個ほど植え足しました。結構茂って来ています。来年はたくさん咲いてくれると良いな〜。

A lot of anemone bulbs were planted last year but only a few came up, so we added about 10 bulbs this year, it looks like quite a lot of them are coming out already, I hope we’ll see a lot of them next year.

 

 

 

ポットに植え込む用の植物を買いに行ったときに、クリスマスローズの苗も２つ買いました。既に２種類植えられていますが、もう少し増やしたくて。この白いのを買いました。

When we went to a garden centre the other day to buy the plants for the pots, we also bought 2 pots of Christmas Roses to go into one of our beds.  We had 2 kinds already planted there but wanted some more so added these white ones.

One of them planted last year is this cherry pink one.

 

白にチェリーピンクの模様がある八重咲きのひらひらっとした花びらもの。

And the other is these white ones with cherry pink dots, they are multi-layered and a little frilly and very pretty.

 

この一角に植えられています。ここは、先日マルチングをしました。この辺りの土壌は粘土質で全般的に植物を植えるのには良くないのですが、この一角は特に酷くてカチカチなので土壌改良が必要なのです。

All the Christmas Roses are planted in this area, where we did mulching the other day.  The soil around this area is heavy with a lot of clay, so not good for planting most plants, but this part of our garden is particularly bad, with very hard and heavy soil so we need to improve it.

 

こういう位置付けです。陽が余り当たらない場所でもあります。

今日は雨は降らないという予報だったのにご覧の通り降ったので、お庭仕事はお休みしました。早く進めたいのに。

It wasn’t supposed to rain today but it did as you see, so a day off from gardening.  I wish we could just get on with it.
