昨日も今日もお天気が良くなく風も強いので、外は夏服では寒いです。家の中は２３度以上あって暖かいですが。そういえば、風のせいか、今日はあまり鳥の声を聞いていません。この辺りは田舎なので、ことのところずっと鳥の声が煩いくらいでしたが。
The weather hasn’t been very good and it’s been windy yesterday and today so it feels a little cold outside in just summer clothes. Inside is still warm enough, though. Maybe because of the wind, I haven’t heard much birds today. They’ve been making a lot of noise recently, but not today.
昨日、予定通り、水曜日に届いたペンステモンとフォクスグローブをガーデナーさんが植え付けをしてくださいました。朝方雨が降ってお昼にはやんでいたので、土が柔らかくて植え付けもしやすかったと思います。
As planned, our gardener (and his assistants) came yesterday and planted the new penstemons and foxgloves that were delivered on Wednesday. It rained very early in the morning but had stopped by lunch time so I guess the ground was softer than usual and easier to plant.
ペンステモンは去年の夏、とても綺麗に咲いていたのですが、冬の霜でダメなってしまいました。周りで聞くところによると同じようにペンステモンが冬越え出来なかったという話はいくつか聞いていて、これまでにはなかったことのようです。植えられていたのは結構暗い赤だったので、今回は明るい濃いピンクをオーダーしていただきました。
Our Penstemons were looking beautiful last summer but they didn’t survive the frosts of the winter. I’ve heard a few stories of people that lost penstemons last winter, although apparently it’s very unusual. The penstemons we had were very dark red but this time I asked for a brighter colour – and chose shocking pink.
フォックスグローブは、わたしが雑草と間違えて抜いてしまいました（爆）。リノベーションの後にすごく大量の苗を工事をしてくださった方達が植えてくださったので全部は把握できていなくて、そして苗も小さなもので多分フォクスグローブは春になって小さな葉っぱが出てきた状態だったので、夫に雑草かどうかアプリで調べてもらったら雑草ということだったので抜いちゃったのです。
The reason we had to ‘replace’ the foxgloves is because I pulled them all out last year thinking they were weeds. After the garden renovation we had a huge number of plants planted by the renovation company and we weren’t familiar with what had gone in. I guess the plants were quite small as well and small leaves came out in spring, which I thought were weeds. I did ask my husband to check what they were with his phone application of plant identification and it said they were weeds.
フォックスグローブは森の中のような環境を好むとのことで、日陰になる場所（３か所）に植えました。１か所は家の中から見て右の端っこ、ガーデンゲートがある場所の隅っこ。この場所は日があまり当たらないだけでなく、土も良くないので（秋にマルチングをしてから以前よりは大分改善はされています）紫陽花も２度ダメになっています。育ってくれると良いのですが。
Foxgloves like to grow in the woods so we planted them in dappled shade / partial shade in 3 places. One of them is here, which is near the garden gate. It’s on the far right if you stand in the kitchen/living room looking out at the garden. This area doesn’t get much sun and the soil isn’t good so 2 hydrangea died there after planting (although it is much better now as we mulched in autumn). I hope these will do OK.
因みに苗の植え付けですが、日本では秋に植え付けるのが一番良い植物が多いと思うのですが、イギリスでは冬によく雨が降って若い植物は腐ってしまうことが多いので秋の植え付けはあまり推奨されていず、春から夏が良いようです。
Incidentally, in Japan, in general, it’s supposed to be the best to do planting in autumn, but here in England it rains so much in winter that some of them would go rotten, so apparently it’s better to do planting in spring or summer in general.
２か所目は上の場所から左に移動して、家の中から見て正面の少し右側の枇杷の木の下。ここは木陰になります。
Also planted some under the loquat tree. It’s a little on the right side from the middle if you stand in the house looking out the garden.
そして、家の中から見て大体真正面の辺りにあるベンチの後ろ。ここには大きな木があるので葉っぱが茂っている時期は木陰になります。スィートピーを植えた場所なのですが、植えた時はまだそれほど葉っぱが茂っていなくて結構日当たりが良いと思い植えたのですが、大失敗。今はほとんど木陰になっていて日が当たりにくいのでスィートピーはあまり咲いていません。
And the last place is behind the bench, which is under a large tree, so it’s in the shade when the leaves are out. We planted sweetpeas along the fence because I thought it was getting the sun but once the leaves were out of course it became shady, not a good place for sweetpeas.
ペンステモンは２か所に植えました。家の中から見て左側の芝刈りロボットがいる辺り。ペンステモンは日当たりが良いところに植えました。
We planted Penstemons in 2 places. One is near where the lawn mowing robot is stationed, on the left side of the garden from the house. They want the sun.
もう１か所は、フォックスグローブを植えた枇杷の木の前。ここも日当たりが良い場所です。
The other place is in front of foxgloves near the loquat tree, where they will get a lot of sun.
