今日は午前中にチチェスターのネイルサロン、午後から美容院に予約を入れていたので、その間の時間にチチェスターでランチをしました。別の場所（ストリントン）にあるJoanna’s のアフタヌーンティーが高いけれど（１人40ポンド、8000円近くします）とても美味しいと聞いていたのですが、その支店がチチェスターにあったので行ってみることにしました。思っていたよりもきちんとした感じのティールームで、田舎には珍しい（笑）スタイルでした。かなり、女性っぽい雰囲気。この前は時々通っているはずなのですが全く気づかなかったですし、人から聞くのもストリントンのJoanna’s ばかりでウェブサイトにも「チチェスター店がオープンしました！と書かれていたのでごく最近オープンしたのかと思ったのですが、１年ほど前にオープンしたそうです。

I had an appointment at my nail salon in the morning and the hair salon in the afternoon in Chichester, so we had lunch in between the appointments.  I’ve heard a few times that “Joanna’s Tea room” in Storrington serves very nice afternoon tea although it’s expensive (£40 per person) and there is ow a branch in Chichester so we tried it for lunch today.  It was much more ‘posh’ looking and quite elegant for country town like Chichester, with quite feminine decor.  We must’ve walked past this place many times but never noticed it and I saw they say “Chichester Branch is now open” on their website so we sort of assumed it was new but apparently it’s been there for about a year.

美味しいと聞いているのはアフタヌーンティーでランチについては聞いたことがなかったので、予約なしでもOKならアフタヌーンティー、だめなら軽いランチをしようと思って行きましたが、アフタヌーンティーは３０分待ちでも良ければ出来ますとのことでした、夫と相談して結局今日はランチメニューから選ぶことにしました。

What I’ve heard they are good at is Afternoon Tea, and haven’t heard anything about their lunch so we were thinking of having Afternoon Tea if we could, but we hadn’t made a booking and they said it would take 30 minutes to prepare it, so we opted for the lunch menu today.

わたしは、クラブサンドにしました。パンが結構分厚いのでわたしにはボリュームがあり過ぎるのですが若い方ならそんなことはないと思います、パンもレタスも使われているものが全部新鮮で、パンのトースト加減も塩胡椒具合もちょうど良く、とても美味しかったです！イギリスでは、ちょっと感激するレベル。ところで、イギリスではトーストはすごくすごく薄いパンなのに何故サンドイッチのパンは分厚くスライスされているのかが不思議です。日本と逆ですね。それにしても、久しぶりに「美味しい！」と思えるものに当たって嬉しかったです。

I had the Club Sandwich.  The bread is sliced quite thickly, like many places in England, so it was a little difficult to eat and a little too much for me, but I guess it’s fine for younger people.  However, everything was fresh – the bread, lettuce and other fillings – the bread was toasted nicely, it was seasoned just right, and was very tasty.  I would say one of the best sandwiches I’ve had.  It always puzzles me, though, why they slice bread for sandwiches very thickly while they typically slice their bread very thinly for toast – it’s totally opposite to Japan.  Anyway, it was very good.  I was very happy to find it tasty because it hasn’t happened for a while when we eat out.

 

夫は、エッグベネディクト。美味しかったそうですが、卵に火が入り過ぎていてトロッと流れ出なかったのが残念。チップスを少しつまみ食いしたのですが、とても美味しかったです！

My husband had Eggs Bennedict.  He said it tasted good, but sadly the eggs were a bit over cooked and the yolks didn’t run – it’s very disappointing when that happens!  Chips were very good, though.

 

 

お茶は、アールグレーを２人分。お会計は、39ポンド（7800円）でした。もう、日本円にしたくない気分（笑）。まぁ、円安が酷すぎるので個人的には1ポンド150円くらいで換算したいところ。紅茶とサンドイッチで１人3900円と思うとひぇ〜と思いますし（でも、場所によっては日本でも美味しいお紅茶と美味しいサンドイッチを食べるとそれなりにしますよね）、イギリスでも結構お高い。でも、ティールームの雰囲気も特別感がありますし、サンドイッチも美味しかったので良いのです。ただ、人に良かったとおすすめするべきかどうかは迷うところ、多分、一般的に「高すぎる」と言われるレベルのような気がしますが、どうなのかな。ちょっとしたカフェのメニューを見るとサンドイッチやサラダなどは15ポンド近くするので、そう考えるとそれほど高くない気はするのですが。

We had Early Grey tea and the bill was £39.  I should not convert it into yen because it sound horrendous.  I suppose it is quite expensive for a sandwich and tea even for England, but the tearoom itself felt a little special and the sandwich was exceptionally good so I don’t mind.  I don’t know if I can recommend it to other people, though, because I do wonder if people in general would find it too much.  I just looked at a menu of another cafe and their sandwiches or salads would cost nearly £15 so maybe not so expensive.

ちなみに、今日も寒くて、アクリル系のセーターを着ていましたが太陽が出ていた時はまだ良かったのですが（それでも風が吹くと寒かった）雲に隠れると途端に寒く、ジャケットを着なかったことを後悔しました。日本の３月くらいの気候かな、と思います。

It was a little chilly again today.  I was wearing a jumper (acrylic, not wool) but it felt cold specially when the sun was hidden by clouds and I regretted I wasn’t wearing a jacket.  Maybe March weather in Japan.
