今日は、夫の弟のお誕生日で、お祝いランチに呼んでいただいていたので行ってきました。夫の兄とパートナーも来ていたので、久しぶりに兄弟３人が揃う集まりでした。日本ではお誕生日のお祝いは本人以外が企画することがほとんどだと思います。イギリスでも大きな節目のお誕生日にご家族やお友達がサプライズのパーティーを開く、ということもありますが、本人が家族やお友達に声をかけて集まることの方が多いように感じます。今日は義弟の奥さんが主に用意してくださっていましたが、ご本人も一緒にしていました。ランチは、ピクニック風のもの。スーパーで買ったもの色々と、トマトのタルト、ポテトサラダ、ビーンズサラダ、とたくさんご馳走が並びました。

It’s my husband’s younger brother’s birthday today and we were invited to his birthday lunch at their place.  My husband’s elder brother and his partner also came, it’s been a little while since all 3 brothers got together.  In Japan, it’s almost always their husbands or wives or family mambers or their friends who celebrate the birthday girls/boys, but in England it’s often the birthday boys/girls themselves, who would invite their families/friends to celebrate their birthdays.  Today I guess it was my brother-in-law’s wife who planned it but my brother-in-law was also preparing for the lunch together.  The lunch was sort of “picnic at home” with tomato tart, potato salad & bean salad as well as many things from a supermarket, a lot of food!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

バースデーケーキは、なぜかイギリスでとても人気で必ずスーパーに置いてある、キャタピラ（毛虫）ケーキ。基本的にはお子さん向けなのだとは思います。

And a birthday cake.  I don’t know why but ‘caterpillar cakes’ are very popular in England, you see them everywhere.  I guess their main targets are children but I don’t know why ‘caterpillar’.  Do children particularly love caterpillars in this country?  I know there is a well-known picture book for children, is it why?  I must say the shape makes it easy to cut.
