Wakehurst Place

火曜日から４泊で、日本からお友達が遊びに来てくださっています。香港の時からのお友達、長年シェフをされた後、今は日本で主にズームでお料理教室をされています。お忙しい中、パリにご旅行で滞在された後、こちらに寄ってくださいました！午後１時前にガトウィック着のフライトだったので、遅れる可能性も考えるとランチの予約を取るのは難しいと思ったので、アフタヌーンティーの予約を取っていました。ガトウィックから近くのホテルで午後３時半の予約を入れていて、普通に到着するとホテルに直接向かうには早すぎる時間、ということで近くのナショナルトラストのガーデン、Wakehurst Placeでぶらぶらしよう、という予定を立てていました。実際、フライトは予定通りに到着し荷物もすぐに出てきたようで１時半ごろには会うことが出来て、直接アフタヌーンティーに向かうには早すぎる時間でした。ですが、この日、ヒートウェーブでわたしたちが住む辺りでも２９度、ガトウィック周辺では３０度を越す暑さ、お庭をぶらぶらするには暑すぎるけれど、かと言って他に行くところも思いつけず、結局、やっぱりとりあえず Wakehurst Place に行ってみよう、ということになりました。

A friend of mine is staying with us from Tuesday for 4 nights. I first met her in Hong Kong so we’ve known each other for longer than 20 years. She was a chef in a couple of restaurants for many years but is now running cooking classes, mainly on Zoom, in Japan for the last few years. She had a holiday in Paris for 10 days and is having a few days with us now before going back to Japan. Her flight was scheduled to arrive a little before 1:00pm so we thought it may not be a good idea to book a lunch in case her flight was delayed, so booked an afternoon tea at a hotel not far from Gatwick from 3:30pm. Our plan was to stop for a walk at Wakehurst Place (National Trust) on our way from the airport. Her flight did arrive on time and it didn’t take long to get her baggage and she came out around 1:30 so it was much too early to go to the hotel directly. However it was an extremely hot day, 29C around here and over 30C around Gatwick, we didn’t really feel like walking in a garden but we couldn’t think of anywhere else to go either. So after discussing a little we did go to Wakehurst Place.

でも、やっぱり暑かった！日陰も少なくて、多分もっともっと見るところがあったのだと思うのですが、３、４０分ぶらぶらとゆっくりと歩いて終わりにしました。

It really was so hot! Not a lot of shady areas so we didn’t stay for long, just 30 or 40 minutes, walking slowly. I think there are a lot of different areas there that we could have seen but it was just too hot to enjoy the walk.
