今日が一番暑い予報だったので家で篭っていたかったのですが、今日はチチェスターのネイルサロンに予約を入れていたので仕方なく出かけました。とは言っても夫に車で送ってもらってピックアップしてもらうので、往復は涼しい。ただ、ネイルサロンにはエアコンがないですし窓も小さいので暑いだろうと、持ち歩ける扇風機を持っていくつもりだったのに、忘れてしまいました。幸い、思っていたほど暑くなく、大きな扇風機もゆるく回っていたので汗をかくことなく終わりました。でも、ネイリストさんたちは暑い、暑いとおっしゃっていました。集中すると暑くなりますもんね。ただ、湿度が低いので、ネイルサロンから車までの往復だけですが、外は思っていたほどには暑く感じませんでした。
It’s supposed to be the hottest day today and we would have stayed home but I had an appointment at my nail salon in Chichester so we did go out – however as usual my husband took me and picked me up by car so it wasn’t a problem to go and come back. I thought it would be very hot in the salon, though, as it’s on the 1st floor, there is no air-con and the window is very small so I was planning to take a portable fan with me but forgot! However it wasn’t as hot as I expected and with a tall fan on in the corner of the room it was comfortable enough. The nailists kept saying how hot they were, though – I think you get hotter when you concentrate on something. Also the humidity is quite low so it didn’t feel that hot when I walked between the car and the nail salon.
エアコンの話しになって、「去年、エアコンの見積もりを取ったのに、なんで設置しなかったのかしら、昨日の夜、自分の結論を恨んだわ、今年は来年のために絶対つける！」とおっしゃっていました（笑）。そうなんです、去年もエアコンの話しになり、大体小さめのものだと１台１０００ポンド（２０万円くらい）くらいだと思うというと、もっともっと高いと思っていたとおっしゃっていたんです、多分その後見積もりを取られたんでしょうね。イギリスでは一般家庭でエアコンをいれているところは本当に少ないので、エアコンが身近ではなく、莫大な値段だと思っている方も多いのです。日本円では２０万円ですが円高なので、感覚としては１０万円くらいの感覚、気軽に使える金額ではないですが買えない金額ではないですよね。でも、イギリスで眠れないくらい暑い期間は多分１年に１週間とか２週間、あとは扇風機で凌げるので（わたしは扇風機をつけっぱなしで寝ると喉が痛くなりますが。。。）ヒートウエーブが過ぎてしまうと忘れてしまったり、まぁいいかと思ったり、なんだと思います。（古い建物だったりすると規制でつけられないところも多いようですが。）
At the salon we ended up talking about air-cons and one of them said, “I got a quote for installing air-cons, I don’t know why I didn’t go ahead! I regretted my life decision last night in bed! I am definitely going to install them now.” I do remember talking about how much it would cost last year with them and told me probably about £1,000 for a unit, I guess she got a quote after that. As it’s so rare to have an air-con in an ordinary house in the UK people seem to think it is ridiculously expensive, I remember them telling me they thought it would cost a lot more. £1,000 isn’t nothing but it’s not something a standard household in general cannot afford for something that would make a big difference. However, I suppose it’s only a week or two weeks in the UK when it’s so uncomfortably hot here, a fan is good enough for other hot days so once the heatwave passes people either forget it or think it’s not worth it. (Also some buildings won’t get permission to install one.)
書き忘れていましたが、学校は午前中だけとか休校になっているところが多いようです。
I’d been forgetting to mention it but many schools are having just morning lessons or are closed during these extreme heat days.
そんな暑い日の今日の夕食は、ミートボールとマカロニのグラタンでした（笑）。暑い日に食べるものではないという気はしますが、なぜだけグラタンが食べたくなったので、昨日、冷凍庫からマリネしたチキンと夫がしばらく前に作って余ったものを冷凍していたミートボールを冷蔵庫に移していて、そのミートボールをグラタンにしました。玉ねぎ、にんにく、赤パプリカ、ズッキーニ、缶トマトで作ったお野菜がゴロゴロしたトマトソースでミートボールに焼き色をつけてから軽く煮て、マカロニを加え、上から夫が作ってくれたホワイトソースをかけてチーズをかけてオーブンで焼きました。美味しく出来ました。たくさん出来たので、まだ、半分ちょっと残っています。
On such a hot day, we cooked meatball & macaroni gratin! I know, it’s not something you think we would like to eat on a hot day but I guess because we have air-con for some reason that’s what I came up with to use the meatballs that I moved from the freezer to the fridge yesterday. I also moved marinated chicken from the freezer to the fridge and asked my husband which he wanted and he preferred meatballs. So I sautéed onion, garlic, red pepper & courgette, then added a tin of tomatoes to make a tomato sauce with chunky vegetables and cooked the meatballs after searing them on the outside. I added some cooked maaroni to that, put it all in a gratin dish, poured on white sauce that my husband cooked, then sprinkled a layer of some cheese on top and baked it in the oven for 12 minutes until it was nice and brown. There was quite a lot so we only had about a half – we’ll have the other half sometime later.
明日は少し気温が下がる予報です。
The temperature is expected to be a little cooler tomorrow around here.
