昨日はお友達ご夫婦と夕食をご一緒しました。お友達のご提案で絵、時々歩きに行っている West Dean Gardens にあるレストランに行きました、夏の間の数週間だけディナーも提供しているようです。昨日はお天気も良かったので、外席に座りました。
We had dinner with our friends at the restaurant at “West Dean Gardens”, where they serve dinners only for a few weeks during the summer. It was nice weather yesterday so we sat at a table outside.
メニューは
前菜４種類、メイン４種類、デザート４種類でした。
There were 4 choices in each course.
ホームメイドのパン、ふんわりとしてとても美味しかったです。
Homemade bread, which was nice and soft and very nice.
わたし以外の３人の前菜は、トラウトのリエット、とても美味しかったようでした。
The other 3 in our group had Trout Villette to start, which my husband said was very good.
わたしは、エアルーム・トマトサラダ。今更ですが、メニューによるとカボチャの種とクルトンが載るはずですが、なかったです。あれば、もう少し楽しめたと思います、トマトとドレッシングとピーシュートだけでした（涙）。イギリスのトマトは美味しくなくて、美味しそうに見えても味がすごく薄いんです、これもそうでした。ミニトマトの方が美味しいのに。
I had Heirloom Tomato Salad – but I just realised that I didn’t have “toasted pumpkin seeds, croutons” as the menu said! Well, they would have made it much more enjoyable. The tomatoes were tasteless as they tend to be in England so it was quite boring. We haven’t found any good large tomatoes here except the one that we found in M&S one time and which we cannot find since. Mini tomatoes have much more flavour so I wish they used mini tomatos but they use these because they look pretty, I think.
お友達のメインは、蟹のパスタの、チリのピクルス、サンファイヤー入り。クリームも使われていたようで、美味しいとおっしゃっていました。
My friend’s main was Pasta with crab, pickled chilli and samphire. It also had some cream and she seemed to have enjoyed it very much.
夫とお友達のご主人は、ラム。焼いただけ、という感じで、夫にはあまり美味しくなかったようでした。
My husband and my friend’s husband had lamb, which my husband said was quite boring since it was just very simply cooked with just some potatoes.
メインについてきたお野菜。ナイフでも切れないくらい硬い人参、などなど。
Vegetables that came with the main dishes – the carrots were so hard, I had trouble with cutting one with a knife!
わたしは、他に食べられるものがなかったので、チキン・スープリーム。まぁ、こんな感じだろうなと思っていましたが、多分お塩もしていないので味がない。皮もカリッとしてなくてブヨブヨだったのではずしていただきました。ソースにつけたいただけばまぁいただけるのですが、ソースが少なくて半分をソースをつけながらいただいたらなくなってしまったので、半分だけいただきました。ポテトは美味しかったです。
The only main dish I could eat from the menu was Chicken Supreme, but as I expected I found it quite boring. It wasn’t cooked with salt so not much taste of anything and the skin was very flabby rather than crispy so I took it off. I was able to eat it by dipping it in the sauce but there was quite little sauce that after having a half of the dish the sauce was gone – so I left the rest. Potatoes were good.
デザート。お友達のご主人は、バスク・チーズケーキ。日本でずいぶん前にすごく流行ってましたが、イギリスでは最近になって見かけるようになりました。美味しかったそうです。
The dessert. My friend’s husband had Basque Cheese Cake. It went viral in Japan quite many years ago but it’s only recently that when we started seeing it in England on menus in restaurants. He said it was very nice.
夫は、イートンメス。クリーム大好き、甘いの大好き、なので美味しかったらしいです。
My husband had Eton Mess. He loves cream, he loves anything sweet, so he did enjoy it very much.
わたしはチョコレート・トルテ。ヘビーすぎず、ブラウニーのような感じで美味しかったです。半分くらいは夫にあげてしまいましたが。
I had Chocolate Torte. It wasn’t too heavy, very similar to a brownie and quite enjoyable. I did give about a half to my husband though.
ビールやワインなど１人１杯ずつプラスお友達はもう１杯、ガス入りのお水１本、夫は食後にエスプレッソ、わたしは普通のコーヒーもいただき、チップを加えて全員で１２０ポンド（２２５００円）だったので、イギリスとしてはとてもお安いです。メインはキャッチアップでしたし、一応わたしも食べられたので（すごく臭みが強いとか塩辛すぎるとかで食べられない時も結構あるので、食べられればよし、という感じです）良かったです。
We had a bottle of beer or sparkling wine and my friend had another glass of wine, I also had a bottle of sparkling water. After the meal, my husband had Espresso and I had normal coffee and it was £120 including tip for all 4 of us, so very inexpensive for England. The main thing was to get together with our friends and at least I was able to eat what I ordered. There are times when I cannot eat something because it’s too gamy or too salty so I was glad.
